Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of my favourite childhood television shows was "Fingerbobs" - I knew all the words to the songs, and joined in with gusto. Can you remember the name of the cute little paper-shelled tortoise who featured in the show?

Answer: Flash

Originally made as part of the iconic "Watch With Mother" series, "Fingerbobs" was created by Joanna Cole who also wrote the "Magic Schoolbus" stories. It first aired in 1972, and just thirteen episodes were made.
2. One toy which I coveted desperately during my childhood in the 1970s was a Chopper bicycle. With the shiny gear stick, odd sized wheel rims, 'ape-hanger' handle bars, and shiny yellow paint, they were truly a thing of beauty to my childish eyes. Which company marketed the Chopper in the UK, from 1970 onwards?

Answer: Raleigh

Sadly my parents never caved in to my plaintive requests and I was forced to beg my little friends for a sneaky turn on their Choppers when mum and dad weren't looking!
The Raleigh Chopper has become a true cultural icon over the years and was relaunched in 2004, with some small design changes to allow for modern safety requirements. The original design was prone to various mishaps in the hands of young riders, most of which could be blamed on the design.
3. 1977 saw the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, and the UK celebrated. One somewhat dubious 'tribute' was the song "God Save the Queen" which was banned by the BBC, and refused airplay. Which iconic punk band sang it?

Answer: Sex Pistols

The BBC and 'the Establishment' were outraged at the song, and deemed it offensive and disrespectful. It was banned and denied airtime on all the BBC stations. It was popular with teenagers however, and made it to number two in the UK Singles Charts in spite of, if not because of the ban. The media furore served to gain the Pistols extra publicity, and boost their record sales.
4. Millions of people watch the FIFA World Cup tournament on television, when it is held every four years. Is it true that each of the three tournaments held in the 1970s was won by the host country?

Answer: False

Of the three World Cup tourneys held during the 70s, two were won by the team from the host country. In 1974, this was West Germany, and in 1978 it was Argentina.
The 1970 event was hosted by Mexico and won by Brazil, giving them their third victory.
5. Even as a small child, I loved to read, and one of my favourite authors was Roald Dahl. In which of his books do we meet a small boy and his Dad, who live in a gypsy caravan and pull off a very cunning plan to outwit the nasty landowner Mr. Victor Hazell?

Answer: Danny the Champion of the World

"Danny the Champion of the World" was first published in 1975. In 1989 the story was made into a film starring Jeremy Irons and his real life son Samuel as Danny and his father William.
6. One of my first outings to the cinema came in 1978, when I was taken to see "Grease" - 'everyone' was talking about it, singing the songs, and dancing the dances. Can you remember who played Kenickie?

Answer: Jeff Conaway

"Grease" was the most successful film of 1978, and one of the most successful musical films of all time.
Jeff Conaway played Kenickie in the film after having played Danny in the Broadway show.
7. One of our favourite childhood outdoor toys in the 1970s was called a "Streaker". It was yellow and orange with blue handles, and required quite a bit of strength to make it "go" properly. What shape was the orange part of this toy?

Answer: Rugby ball

The Streaker, also sold as a "Zoom Ball" or "Going", was an orange plastic rugby ball with a hole through the long axis, threaded onto two yellow nylon lines with blue plastic handles at each end. One child held each set of handles, and took turns to pull them apart as hard as they could, which (in principle!) made the ball whizz along the strings to the other end, where their partner would have to pull their handles apart and send it whizzing back. Bad timing usually meant a rap on the knuckles from the end of the ball, although it did need quite a lot of strength to get the ball the full length of the strings.
8. One of my favourite childhood authors was Susan Cooper, and in particular her "Dark is Rising" series. Which of these is the final book of this series, first published in 1977?

Answer: Silver on the Tree

"Silver on the Tree" brought the characters and plot elements of the previous four books of the series together, and told of the last battle between the Dark and the Light. The series draws heavily on Arthurian myth and legend, and two of the books won Newberry Medals the years they were published.
9. 1979 was declared the International Year of the Child by the United Nations, and a whole host of stars came together to perform at the Music for UNICEF concert. Which of Abba's songs was released as a single in January 79 and used to commemorate this occasion?

Answer: Chiquitita

"Chiquitita" was the first single release from Abba's "Voulez-Vous" album. All the proceeds from the sale of the single were donated to UNICEF, and they still are. Over the years the song has raised well over two million US dollars for the cause.
10. The host of the UK "Today" television show managed to wreck his career in 1976, when an interview with the punk band the Sex Pistols went horribly wrong. After some 'encouragement' from the host, they swore several times, live on air, during a daytime broadcast. Who was this hapless host?

Answer: Bill Grundy

Grundy was immediately suspended by the network, and the show itself was cancelled a couple of weeks after the incident. Although the show was only shown in a relatively small area, the press took up the story and whipped up public outrage against both the band and Grundy.
