Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1975 film "The Wind and the Lion" was based on a kidnapping incident in Morocco in 1904. Which US President, portrayed by Brian Keith, was featured in the film?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Hollywood took extensive liberties with the Perdicaris Incident, in which a Greek-American and his son were kidnapped in Morocco. In the film, Perdicaris' wife (portrayed by Candice Bergen) and two children were kidnapped by a Berber rebel (Sean Connery) who was using them as a bargaining chip against the Moroccan government.

Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Keith) decided to use the incident for political propaganda and mounted a rescue operation to show the might of the US military.
2. What sport was the focus of the 1968 film "Paper Lion" starring Alan Alda?

Answer: American football

Based on a true story, "Paper Lion" was about George Plimpton's experience as a quarterback during the Detroit Lion's training camp. Plimpton was writing a story for "Sports Illustrated" magazine about being a quarterback, and he wanted to go undercover to make it authentic. Alan Alda, in his first starring role, portrayed Plimpton, and many of the supporting actors were actual Detroit Lion players. Alda's physique was similar to that of the real Plimpton, so playing a quarterback was certainly a punishing role!
3. In the 1973 Disney feature length cartoon "Robin Hood", which of these characters is portrayed as a lion?

Answer: Prince John

Both Prince John and King Richard of England were lions in the film. They were both voiced by Peter Ustinov. Robin Hood was a fox and was voiced by Tony Award winning actor Brian Bedford. The Sheriff of Nottingham was a wolf, naturally, and was voiced by Pat Buttram.
4. The 1966 film "Born Free" told the story of a lioness who had been raised by a European couple. Where did the family (and the lioness) live?

Answer: Kenya

The film told the true story of George and Joy Adamson and the orphaned lion cub, Elsa. The Adamsons had raised three cubs that were orphaned after George had killed their mother while working as a game warden in Kenya; two were later sent to a zoo, but they kept Elsa as a pet.

When they were forced to either send her to a zoo or release her, they opted for the latter, but they had to spend quite a bit of time teaching the family pet how to survive in the wild.
5. Which Oscar-winning actor voiced the villainous Scar in the 1994 film "The Lion King"?

Answer: Jeremy Irons

Scar, the younger brother of the king lion, Mufasa, wants to be the king, so he murders Mufasa and then scares off the heir, Simba, by telling him that Mufasa's death was his fault. Simba later learns the truth and returns to claim his rightful place. Jeremy Irons won the Best Actor Oscar of 1990 for playing a real-life villain, Claus von Bulow, a socialite accused of murdering his wife with an insulin overdose.
6. Which of these films features a character named de Lioncourt?

Answer: Interview With the Vampire

The 1994 film "Interview With the Vampire" was based on the eponymous novel by Anne Rice, first published in 1976. It starred Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt, a vampire born in 1760. The character Lestat also appears in several other novels by Anne Rice.
7. Over what issue were King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine battling in the 1968 film "The Lion in Winter"?

Answer: His successor

In the Oscar-nominated film, Henry (Peter O'Toole) was grooming his son John (Nigel Terry) to succeed him, but Eleanor (Katharine Hepburn) wanted the more capable Richard (Anthony Hopkins) to be Henry's successor. The film took place on a Christmas Eve during which the two fought over who should succeed Henry, with Henry also threatening to annul his marriage to Eleanor and beget more possible successors with his mistress.

Although Richard came to be known as Richard the Lion-Hearted, the "lion" in this film was Henry; Richard baited Henry in the film: "listen to the lion roar".
8. Which actor played Lyon Burke in the 1967 film "Valley of the Dolls"?

Answer: Paul Burke

The film was based on the 1966 book of the same name by Jacqueline Susann. It has become somewhat notorious over the years since it was made, as it starred Sharon Tate as Jennifer North. Sharon was later murdered by members of Charles Manson's "family" gang, when she was just days away from giving birth to her first child.

The story followed the rise and fall of three young women in Hollywood; the "dolls" of the title were actually tranquilizers. Paul Burke, who spent most of his career playing authority figures until he was arrested for racketeering, portrayed Lyon Burke, an attorney for a talent agency who got involved with the women.
9. In the 2003 film "Secondhand Lions", why was Walter sent to live with his great-uncles?

Answer: To get their money

Walter's mother wanted to get the fortune that Hub (Robert Duvall) and Garth (Michael Caine) allegedly had, so she dropped him off to live with them. Walter's cousins had the same idea and tried to get rid of Walter (Haley Joel Osment), but the uncles became fond of Walter and allowed him to stay.

The lion in the title of the film referred not only to an old lioness that the uncles had purchased with the intent of having a safari (Walter talked them out of it), but also to the uncles themselves who had been given a new life with Walter.
10. In the 2005 film "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", which actor provided the voice for the lion Aslan?

Answer: Liam Neeson

Aslan was a computer-generated lion in the live-action film adaption of the C.S. Lewis fantasy novel. In the story, Aslan was trying to free Narnia from the control of the White Witch and he got help from four English siblings during World War II. The parallels between Aslan and Jesus Christ were intentional according to C.S. Lewis, so Liam Neeson caused a bit of a stir when he suggested that Aslan also symbolized "Mohammed, Buddha and all the great spiritual leaders and prophets over the centuries".
