Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first stop on the tour was a beautiful island beach, with palm trees waving gently in the breeze, and the sun shining brightly in the sky. Coconuts, fish, and the Paul Gaugin Museum made this visit to Tahiti in the Windward islands a delightful trip. In which body of water would you find Tahiti?
2. Our next souvenir was a beautiful embroidered silk dress called a kimono, and some sandals called zori. We picked them up at a little shop in "The Land of the Rising Sun". Where were we?
3. The next stop on our trip was in Europe, in an area called Pomerania and we adopoted a gorgeous puppy. The ancient capital of the region, Gdansk, became world famous when Lech Walesa, who worked there, started the Solidarity union, and became the first democratic president of his country after the end of communism. Which country is home to Gdansk (also known as Danzig)?
4. During our next tour stop, after buying a cute stuffed toy panda, we visited the Great Wall, and Tiananmen Square. Where were we?
5. We didn't buy any souvenirs at our next stop, but we did get to have a ride on a llama! In a restaurant in the capital city, Lima, we politely refused the guinea pig, but had some nice ceviche instead. Where were we?
6. The only souvenir anyone wanted on our next stop was woolly hats and cosy sweaters. We were freezing cold, but it was worth it to see the Sun shining in the sky at Midnight. We were in the far north of Norway, but could also have gone to Finland or Iceland to see this wonderful sight. What name is given to the imaginary line on the globe that marks the southern limits for viewing the Midnight Sun?
7. Once upon a time, visitors to our next stop might have taken home an elephant's tusk or a rhinoceros' horn for their souvenir, but thankfully killing these beautiful animals for sport is now banned. Instead tourists can take a safari through the Tsavo National Park and hopefully see the animals in the wild instead. In which country, famous for coffee, and the "Cradle of Mankind" in the Great Rift Valley, are we?
8. Many years ago, people called the Anasazi lived in an area where native people called the Navajo now live. We stopped off there on our tour, and bought a lovely stetson cowboy hat, before we went to see the Grand Canyon. Where were we?
9. Our next destination brought us to a beautiful Caribbean island, a U.S. territory but NOT a U.S. state, that has natives who call themselves Boricuas. If we'd been old enough, we could have had a nice cool drink of rum, but we contented ourselves with some delicious fruit juice and a nice game of dominoes in a cafe in the capital San Juan. Where were we?
10. If we'd arrived at this island in the Indian Ocean during the first half of the 1600s, we could have picked up a cute baby dodo for a souvenir. Alas though, by the early 1680s, every single one was gone, and the species was extinct. Which island, whose capital is now called Port Louis, are we visiting?
