1. The very first time we meet Harry, he is a baby being delivered to the Dursleys. The next time we read about him, he is being woken up by his aunt pounding on his door. Where does Harry sleep?

Harry has lived with his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon since his parents were killed, when he was one year old. His aunt and uncle aren't happy about having to raise him and treat him rather shoddily. At the beginning of the first book, Harry lives in the cupboard under the stairs and is treated like a servant.

When his first letter of acceptance from Hogwarts arrives, part of the address includes the fact that he lives in the cupboard under the stairs.

2. What is remarkable about the glasses that Harry wears, before he goes to Hogwarts?

Answer: They are held together by tape.

Harry's aunt and uncle aren't too keen on spending money on him and most of what he owns is in ratty shape or is a hand-me-down from his cousin. The glasses can't be hand-me-downs though, because Dudley doesn't wear glasses.
When he first meets Hermione, she uses an Oculus Reparo spell to fix his glasses.

3. What about Harry is shaped like the item in the picture?

Answer: his scar

Harry has a lightning bolt shaped scar on the right side of his forehead. Hagrid tells Harry that the scar happened as the result of a powerful curse which deflected off of Harry when Lord Voldemort tried to kill him. The scar is very famous in the wizarding world and Ron asks to see it when he and Harry first meet.

4. What happens when Harry goes to the zoo on Dudley's birthday?

Answer: He talks to a snake.

After Dudley pronounces the snake boring, because he won't wake up, Harry stays. To his surprise the snake seems to understand Harry and responds to him, even winking at him. Called by his friend to see what the snake is doing, Dudley runs up and punches Harry, knocking him over. Harry gets angry and the glass on the snake tank disappears, allowing the snake to escape.

The snakes says "Brazil, here I come...Thanksss amigo" to Harry and it slithers away.

5. Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley to purchase his school supplies. He buys his wand from Ollivanders. Mr. Ollivander tells him that his wand has a brother. To whom did Ollivander sell the twin to Harry's wand?

Answer: He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named

Ollivander is among the many witches and wizards who are superstitious about saying Voldemort's name and refer to him as He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Ollivander informs Harry that the phoenix whose feather was the core of his wand gave a second feather, and the wand that it went into was the wand that gave Harry his scar.

6. The picture is of a cauldron. Does Harry have to buy one of these for his first year at Hogwarts (although his was plainer)?

Answer: Yes

Harry's cauldron is needed for Potions Class and the description on his list of school supplies reads "Pewter, standard size 2". Of course Harry's cauldron would not have the decorations that the one in the picture has.

7. Hagrid buys Harry a birthday present from Eeylops Owl Emporium. What is her name?

Answer: Hedwig

According to the letter from Hogwarts, 'Students may also bring an owl OR a cat OR a toad. Hagrid wants to get a birthday gift for Harry and decides on an owl because they are useful and popular among the students.
Hedwig is a snowy owl, like the owl in the picture. These owls are not native to Great Britain.

8. Harry's ticket says that the train to Hogwarts leaves from Platform 9 3/4. In the movie, Hagrid takes Harry to the train station, but in the book he is dropped there by the Dursleys. What do the Dursleys do when they can't find the right platform?

Answer: drive away and leave Harry there

The Dursleys want desperately to be normal and don't want Harry to have anything to do with magic. They believe that there is no such thing as Platform 9 3/4 and are happy to point this out, before driving away, laughing, leaving Harry with his school things. Harry is totally stumped until he overhears the Weasleys talking about muggles and sees them gain access to the platform.

9. While eating sweets from the trolley, Ron introduces Harry to Scabbers. What colour does Ron try to turn Scabbers?

Answer: yellow

Commenting on how boring Scabbers is, Ron tells Harry that he tried to make him yellow "to make him more interesting". The spell he tries is "Sunshine daisies, butter mellow. Turn this stupid fat rat yellow." Of course the spell doesn't work and Hermione, who has shown up just in time to see it, asks if he's sure that it's a real spell.

10. Although first years aren't allowed to have these, an exception is made for Harry when he becomes his Quidditch team's new Seeker. Who gives Harry this item?

Answer: Professor McGonagall

The broom is delivered by six owls at breakfast. It is accompanied by a note from Professor McGonagall instructing Harry not to open the parcel at breakfast because she doesn't want everyone knowing he has a broomstick. It is a Nimbus Two Thousand.
McGonagall is head of Gryffindor and so has a vested interest in seeing her house's Quidditch team do well. Being a first year, Harry doesn't have a broom, so she gets one for him.
