Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Continental Army's main general?

Answer: George Washington

George Washington was actually only suggested to be a general to gain southern favor, since he was a Virginian.
2. What previous war experience had the general of the Continental Army had?

Answer: French and Indian war

George Washington, the general of the Continental Army, was originally a colonel in the English army, but then the king passed a law that said any colonial in the army couldn't hold a rank above captain, which was a major insult to him.
3. Who wrote the pamphlet "Common Sense"?

Answer: Thomas Paine

Thomas Paine was an amazing writer of the time, and later wrote "The American Crisis" to encourage people whose commission in the army was ending to stay.
4. Which order of events is correct starting from the earliest?

Answer: Boston Tea Party, Battles at Lexington and Concord, Valley Forge, Yorktown

The Boston Tea Party was caused by the Tea Acts. This was one of the so-called Intolerable Acts, which started the Revolution (in a sense).
5. Which one of these was not a direct cause of the American Revolution?

Answer: England attacking American ships on the high seas

The Colonies were part of the British empire, and they sent goods to England. It would've been very bad business sense for England to attack its own ships.
6. What document said these words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal"?

Answer: The Declaration of Independence

It could be said that Thomas Jefferson didn't really mean what he wrote, since at that time, America still had slaves, and women weren't counted either.
7. How many people were loyalists during the revolution?

Answer: 1/3 of the colonials

Not everyone was a patriot, in fact the gift the loyalists got after the war was over was land in Canada.
8. Who trained the troops at Valley Forge?

Answer: Baron Von Steuben

The soldiers hated the Baron and wanted him to be relieved of duty, and one soldier even revealed he wasn't a baron to General Washington, when he found out he only cared that his troops were getting trained.
9. What were the famous words spoken at the battle of Bunker Hill?

Answer: "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes."

All of the three wrong answers were famous lines, but not for this battle. The reason he told them this is that their muskets were highly inaccurate and needed to have a close range to fire.
10. Why did the British march on Concord?

Answer: To destroy ammunition.

They marched on Concord to destroy ammunition, and along the way they planned to stop at Lexington to capture colonial leaders John Hancock and Samuel Adams but never did.
