Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you were standing on the moon and the sun was shining on you, what color would the sky be?

Answer: Black

The sky is black when the sun is shining on the moon because the moon has no atmosphere. The moon is also the only place in our solar system, besides the Earth, that people have actually visited. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. He did that on July 20, 1969.
2. A day is shorter than a year on Venus.

Answer: False

A day on Venus lasts 243 Earth days while a year on Venus lasts only 225 Earth days. Venus rotates in the opposite direction to Earth, so on Venus you will see the sun rising in the west.
3. Sunspots are hotter than the rest of the sun.

Answer: False

Some sunspots are so big that they are ten times bigger than the earth. Even though sun spots are cooler compared to the rest of the sun, scientists think the sun actually gets hotter when there are more sunspots, due to the increased activity of the sun.
4. Mercury was named after which Roman god?

Answer: The god of travel

A Mercury day lasts 59 earth days, while a Mercury year lasts only 88 earth days. If you were standing on Mercury, the sun will seem a lot bigger to you since you are closer to it. The sun will seem gigantic; hot and bright too! Whew, I'm glad I'm not living on Mercury!
5. The Earth has an atmosphere.

Answer: True

The Earth's atmosphere goes up about 800 miles in the sky. It's like a greenhouse that protects us from both very high temperatures and low temperatures.
6. Jupiter was named after which Roman god?

Answer: The god of rain, thunder and lightning

A Jovian (Jupiter) day lasts only 10 hours, while one Jovian year lasts 12 Earth years. Its fast rotation is part of the reason that there are violent winds and storms there.
7. Mars is often called 'the ___ planet'.

Answer: red

Mars is called 'the red planet' because it looks red through a telescope or to the naked eye. Mars was named after the Roman god of war since it looked red, like blood to the Romans.
8. How many rings are there approximately around Saturn?

Answer: Thousands

Saturn's rings are made up of ice, dust and rocks! Some of the rocks are the size of a pebble, and some are the size of a whole house.
9. The rings of Uranus circle it ___.

Answer: Vertically

Uranus was discovered in 1781, by William Herschel and his sister Caroline.
10. What color does Neptune appear to us?

Answer: Bright blue

Methane gives Neptune its bright blue color. We can't breathe methane so I don't believe we'll be vacationing there! :)
