Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the following services that help people, which one is not one of what are called the emergency services?

Answer: Vehicle breakdown recovery service

The police force, paramedics and fire and rescue service can all be called in an emergency to help the public in difficulties. As such, they can usually be called for by a very short telephone number.

Vehicle breakdown recovery services help motorists who have become stranded as their vehicle has broken down. Sometimes the person called out can get the vehicle working again, but other times, the vehicle may need to be towed away for repairs to make it work again.
2. All of the following colours can be found in a rainbow; however, which one is a mixture of two of the other colours listed?

Answer: Orange

Found between red and yellow in a rainbow, orange is a mixture of both colours.
To remember the colours of a rainbow, there are two ways of doing it. One is the following mnemonic:

R = Red
O = Orange
Y = Yellow

G = Green

B = Blue
I = Indigo
V = Violet.

This spells out ROY G. BIV. The other way is the phrase "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain".
3. Three of these means of transport travel on roads. Which one, though, travels by air?

Answer: Airplane

For many years, humankind has been fascinated by flying. It wasn't until two Americans - Orville and Wilbur Wright - made the first successful flight in a heavier-than-air aircraft in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina that aviation took off.

Today most countries have an airport or airfield from which airplanes can fly. It is only mountainous / small countries like Andorra, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Monaco and Vatican city that do not have an airport. However, they do have heliports for helicopters to land on.
4. All these animals can be kept as pets, but which one is the odd one out because it lives in water?

Answer: Fish

Apart from having no legs, fish are different in other ways from the other pets we can keep.

Instead of fur, fish have scales. They generally also breathe oxygen dissolved in water rather than from the air itself. However, there are some fish that can be kept as pets that can breathe air via their gills is the oxygen content in the water is low. The most important difference though is that pet fish have to be kept in tanks or large ponds.
5. Three of these books were written by the author Charles Dickens. Which was not?

Answer: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is a book written by the American author, Mark Twain.

Born Samuel Langhorn Clemens, Mark Twain started working as a printer's apprentice at the age of 11 - after the death of his father, graduating to typesetting and writing humorous articles for his local newspaper, the Hannibal Journal. It was whilst working on a riverboat, Twain picked up his pen name from a term pilots of river boats used to mark the depth of water, "mark twain" representing two fathoms (12 feet) of water beneath the boat.

Twain's book, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" was a sequel to his earlier book, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". The book itself though has been criticized for its outdated, racial description of African-Americans.

Although Twain never talked to Charles Dickens in person, Twain admired Dickens' works, and even attended one of the public readings Dickens gave of his works in 1867.
6. Three of the following types of musical performances are primarily produced to be performed on stage. Which one is made to be played on TV?

Answer: Pop music videos

Pop music videos are made by singers and musicians primarily to promote their latest records, designed to be shown on television. In many cases, these music videos can be used as an interpretation of a song to relate what the song is about.

The history of music videos can be traced back to the first films that featured sound in the 1920s. The first claim of using film to promote as song was in 1956 when singer, Tony Bennett made one to promote his song, "Stranger in Paradise". With the advent of dedicated music TV stations in the 1980s, making pop music videos became far more commonplace, whilst in the 21st century, internet sites such as YouTube have been used to help promote new songs by recording artists.
7. The following are all states that can be found in the United States of America. Which one is the odd one out because it does not border any other US states?

Answer: Alaska

Whilst California, Nevada and Oregon all border each other, Alaska - like Hawaii - does not border any other state in the United States of America.

Alaska is unique as due to the position of some of the state's islands - in the Aleutian Island Chain straddling the International Date Line, Alaska is not only the most northern and western state in the USA, but the most eastern as well.

Purchased by US Secretary of State, William H. Seward, from Russia in 1867, Alaska was referred to as "Seward's folly". However, Alaska not only had gold deposits, but oil as well, making it one of the richest states in the USA. In addition, some of the money gained from oil revenue is put into a special fund and distributed to all eligible Alaskans living in the state for 12 months or more.

On an interesting historical note, Alaska was the only state in the USA during World War II to have part of its territory invaded by the Japanese army.
8. The following are all nursery rhymes, but only three are considered to have been written about actual historical events. Which one is the nursery rhyme that is not about an actual recorded historical event?

Answer: Little Miss Muffet

Like many nursery rhymes, the exact meaning of "Little Miss Muffet" is concealed in mystery. There is a claim that it was written in the 16th century by Dr Thomas Muffet for his daughter, but this is dismissed as speculative.

"The Grand Old Duke of York", although surrounded in mystery as well, is mainly believed to be about Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, who lost a battle during the Flanders Campaign in the late 18th century. Other attribute the rhyme to Richard, Duke of York or James II.

"London Bridge is Falling Down" is said to relate to one of the events in London Bridge's past where it fell down - either after being destroyed or through neglect and disrepair. "Ring a Ring o' Roses" is general believed to refer to the bubonic plague that swept throughout England in the mid 17th century.

However, it should be pointed out that in nursery rhymes related to historical events, there are some that dismiss the actual link to the events described in the rhymes.
9. All of these gases can be found in the air we breathe. Which one, though, is a chemical compound and not an element?

Answer: Carbon dioxide

Although making up only a small percentage of the air we breathe, carbon dioxide is a vital chemical compound required for life. During the day, carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants and bacteria via photosynthesis, removing the carbon dioxide from the air and releasing oxygen.

Nitrogen and oxygen are the most abundant gases in the air that we breathe, with argon making up the largest proportion of what is known as trace elements in air, along with helium and neon.
10. The following characters have all been created by Walt Disney. Which one is the odd one out because he rarely, if ever, speaks?

Answer: Pluto

Pluto is the odd one out as he does not speak. First appearing in the Mickey Mouse film, "The Chain Gang" in 1930, it was not until 1931 that Pluto got his name and became Mickey's pet dog. Pluto's name is generally believed to be linked to the discovery of Pluto in the 1930s.

Although not speaking in films, when officially named Pluto in the Mickey Mouse film, "The Mouse Hunt", Pluto did speak, but this was before his characterization had become defined.

As well as appearing in a number of Mickey Mouse films, Pluto had his own film series. In these films, he had such antagonists as Sally the Seal, Butch the Bulldog and Chip 'n' Dale - two mischievous chipmunks who were also antagonists of Donald Duck.
