Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of the following characters found in the Disney film "Frozen" is not human?

Answer: Sven

The odd character out is Sven as he is a reindeer. Despite not speaking as is the case with other animals in Walt Disney films, Sven does have a personality. At times, Sven acts like an over-excited puppy, eager to please. However, when need be, Sven can show a serious side, as when he persuades Kristoff to return to Anna, realising deep down Kristoff loves Anna, but does not wish to admit it.

In addition, Sven loves nothing more than to eat carrots, and is portrayed a couple of times as trying to eat the carrot given to Olaf for a nose by Anna. Another trait is Sven's love for ice, which on one occasion sees Sven getting his tongue stuck when licking ice. Also, when Elsa creates a personal snow flurry for Olaf to stop him melting, Sven is seen trying to lick the snowflakes that were falling from the cloud over Olaf's head.
2. Of the following things that we can eat, which is the odd one out?

Answer: Turnips

Oranges, apples and strawberries are all types of fruit, but turnips are root vegetables found in temperate regions around the world. A member of the Brassica family of plants, turnips can either be slender tap roots or bulbous roots depending on the particular type of turnip. Mainly white in colour, the uppermost part of the root that is exposed to air can be purple, green or red in colour. In some case, even the leaves of turnips can be eaten.

Turnips are said to have first been cultivated in India - circa 1500 B.C. - and initially harvested to make oil from the seeds of the plant. Use of the turnip spread throughout the Roman and Greek empires and now turnips can be found in many places around the world.
3. Each of the following places is a capital city. Which is the odd one out with regards to the continent where that city is located?

Answer: Washington, D.C.

From the capital cities listed, Washington, D.C. is the odd one out since London, Paris and Rome are all European capital cities, whilst Washington, D.C. is a North American capital city. Named after the first American president, Washington, D.C. was built on land donated by Maryland and Virginia on the banks of the Potomac River, and was chosen to be the site of a federal capital city, independent of state capital cities. To facilitate this, the District of Columbia was formed which was initially 100 square miles in area.

In the War of 1812, Washington, D.C. was attacked by the British, and although damage was caused with buildings being burnt, it wasn't until the mid 19th century that much of Washington, D.C. was completed.
4. Which one of these teams is actually a basketball team and not an NFL American football team?

Answer: Los Angeles Lakers

Out of the teams listed, the odd one out is the Los Angeles Lakers as they are a basketball team, not an NFL American football team.

The history of the Los Angeles Lakers (or L.A. Lakers) goes back to 1947, when the Minneapolis Lakers were formed after they bought out the Detroit Gems. In 1959, after some financial struggles, the Lakers relocated to Los Angeles. With players such as Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the L.A. Lakers won five titles during the 1980s. After a barren spell during the early 1990s, the Lakers again found success with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.

As one of the most successful teams in basketball, the L.A. Lakers have built up rivalries with not only the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team, but also the Boston Celtics and the San Antonio Spurs.
5. The following animals are all big cats that can be found living in the wild. Which one of them cannot be found on the same continent as all of the others?

Answer: Tiger

Whilst lions, cheetahs and African leopards can be found mainly in Africa, tigers can be found only in the parts of the Indian subcontinent, East Asia, and Sumatra. The largest of the big cats found in the wild, tigers are an endangered species, due to hunting for their fur and for traditional medicine.

While the majority of tigers are orange with black stripes, there are white tigers which are a subspecies of the Bengal tiger. These tigers are rare, and although have been bred in captivity, due to the small gene pool, many have genetic health problems.
6. The following characters can all be found in the "Harry Potter" series of books written by J.K. Rowling. Who is the odd character out as they were not a Hogwarts student during the series?

Answer: Severus Snape

Whilst, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley are all pupils at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Severus Snape is a teacher.

Initially a teacher in potions, Snape finally achieves his aim of being a teacher of Defence Against the Dark Arts in the sixth book in the "Harry Potter" series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince".

A man of great complexity, Snape's loyalties are often called into question, however, in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", Snape's true loyalties are shown, and we discover that he once loved Harry's mother.
7. Three of the following means of transport are means of travelling that you have to pay to use as a passenger except one. Which of the following listed is the odd one out?

Answer: Your parents' car

Trains, buses and taxis are often called public transport, and as such a fare has to be paid to use them. However, despite being some times jokingly referred to by some parents and "Mum and Dad's taxis service", the family car is free to travel in as a passenger.

The definition of a passenger is anyone travelling in car, bus train, airplane or over conveyance that is not the driver, pilot or part of the crew of that means of transport.
8. All of these planets that are listed can be found in our solar system. Which one is the odd one out with regard to the type of planet it is?

Answer: Jupiter

The largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter is what is known as a gas giant, mainly composed of hydrogen and helium. As such, Jupiter lacks a solid surface like Mars, Venus and the Earth.

Like Saturn, Jupiter has rings around it, although they are very faint. However, Jupiter has over 60 moons orbiting around it, four of which - Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto - are known as Galilean moons. These moons were named after Galileo Galilei, the Italian astronomer who discovered them in the 17th century.
9. Three of the following people listed have all been Presidents of the Untied States of America, except one. Which of the following was actually a British Prime Minister?

Answer: Winston Churchill

Born in 1874, Winston Churchill is one of Great Britain's best known prime ministers, having led Great Britain to victory in World War II.

The son of a British aristocrat and American socialite, Churchill's early career saw him serve in the British Army as a war correspondent. It was during the Second Boer War in South Africa, that Churchill was captured, and managed to escape.

Returning to Britain, Churchill followed his father into politics. However, after being in charge of the Admiralty during the disastrous Gallipoli campaign in World War One, Churchill briefly returned to the army, serving as a commander on the Western Front.

After spending years in the political wilderness, Churchill was among the first politicians to recognise the impending threat of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party during the 1930s. Eventually - after the resignation of Neville Chamberlain - Churchill became prime minster of Britain in 1940.

As well as famous for his speeches, Churchill was also and author and keen artist, enjoying spending his time away from politics at his country home, Chartwell, in Kent.

Upon his death in 1965, Churchill was given a lavish state funeral that was broadcast live around the world. Unlike other notable figures in British History, Churchill requested that he not be buried in either St Paul's Cathedral or Westminster Abbey, but in the Spencer-Churchill family plot in St Martin's Church, Bladon - near to his ancestral home of Blenheim Palace which is the home to the Dukes of Marlborough.
10. Playing musical instruments can be fun, but which of the following musical instruments is different to the others that are listed due to the way it is played?

Answer: Guitar

Whilst flutes, trumpets and saxophones are instruments that involve the player having to blow into them, guitars are stringed instruments that have to be plucked with fingers.

Earliest depictions of guitar-like instruments have been found on carvings and clay tables dating back to Babylonian times, whilst the name guitar can be traced back to 13th century Spain.

Whilst the earliest guitars were all acoustic in nature, the invention of electric guitars in the 20th century helped musicians create many musical styles such as jazz, blues, rock and reggae music. This has led to companies like Fender, Gibson and Rickenbacker to become well known for making electric guitars that are played by many of the world's top musicians.
