Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The prophet Samuel's mother, Hannah, had dedicated him to the Lord. God had answered her prayer, and given her Samuel. What is the name of the man at the temple that she trusted to raise him?

Answer: Eli

Eli was the high priest of Israel at that time.

In the beginning of the book of 1st Samuel in chapter 1, verses 24-28 we see:
"And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young. And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli. And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD. For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there."

In chapter 2, 18-21 we read:
"But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod. Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.
And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD."
2. David had been a mere shepherd boy growing up, and his older brothers thought of him as "just a kid." Later, however he became king of Israel, and they had to change their minds about him. His father was proud of him, but what was his name?

Answer: Jesse

Jesse was David's father; Obed was HIS father; and Boaz was HIS father. Solomon was one of David's sons, who became king after David died.
3. I had a pretty cool sister! She arranged for me to be taken into a king's palace and be raised like royalty, even though I was supposed to be killed as an infant! Her name was Miriam, but can you figure out who I am?

Answer: Moses

I was placed in the Nile River in a little ark of reeds or "bulrushes". My mother was desperately trying to save my life by placing me safely among the crocodiles! Actually, I WAS better off with them, than with the king of Egypt's mandate that all Jewish male children under the age of two were to be killed off.

Ironically, I was rescued by his own daughter, and was raised in the very same palace as Pharaoh himself!

Years later, as I led God's people of Israel toward their homeland, my sister Miriam and my brother Aaron had a problem with my wife. I think they may have been slightly prejudiced against her. At any rate, Miriam got leprosy, and I prayed for God to heal her. He did, and she behaved better from them on.
4. The third son of Adam and Eve had a name that meant something like "to put" or "appointed". What was this third son's name?

Answer: Seth

According to Genesis 4:25, "And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew."
5. Benjamin, the youngest son of Jacob, was born just as his mother died as she delivered him. What was his mother's name?

Answer: Rachel

Ben-Yamin or Ben-Jamin means "Son of my right hand", and this was the name his father gave him, although his mother had originally called him "Ben-Onni", meaning "Son of my sorrow".
6. Absalom, one of king David's sons, grew up and actually tried to kill his father! Ironically, his name means "Father of Peace", from Ab (Hebrew for father) and from Shalom (Hebrew for peace). How did he eventually die?

Answer: he got his hair caught in the branches of a tree and a man threw darts at him

David grieved over his son's death, even though Absalom had tried to kill him previously. Talk about a father's love for his children!
The 18th chapter of 2nd Samuel gives all the gory details and ends with this word from king David:
"And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!"
7. What? An angel told a man what to name his son? That's exactly what happened to a man named Zacharias! Later, his son grew up and lived in the wilderness on locusts, (insects like grasshoppers), and wild honey. He also baptized a lot of people, including Jesus of Nazareth. Who was this relative of Jesus?

Answer: John

John the Baptist, as he became known, got so excited when he heard the voice of Mary, his mother's cousin, as she carried Jesus within her, that he jumped up and down before he was even born!
The Bible says that, "And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost." (Luke 1:41)
8. Once, some adults wanted Jesus to spend some time with their children, but his disciples tried to turn them away, because they felt that He was too busy to waste time on them. What did Jesus have to say about the children, after He heard what the disciples were telling their parents?

Answer: Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not...

The entire 14th verse of Mark 10 reads this way: "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God."
This passage goes on to say, "Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them."

Another way of putting this would be to say, "Allow the children to come to me and do not tell them that they shouldn't. Truly, I tell you, if a person does not come as innocent-minded and as hopeful as a little child does, then that person cannot inherit the kingdom of God."
9. Jesus had some brothers and sisters. He was the oldest of the children, but while His Father was God, according to Matthew 1:18, and His mother was Mary, the rest of the children belonged to Joseph and Mary. What were his brothers' names?

Answer: Joses, Judah, Simeon and James

Mark 6 tells us plainly that the people of Jesus' home region of Galilee plainly did not believe that he was the Messiah. This is reflected in their response, "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judah, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him."

The sisters were not mentioned by name, nor is there a number given that indicates how many there were, but there were at least two, because "sisters" is a plural form, meaning "more than one."
10. Most folks are familiar with the story of Noah's ark, and how Noah traveled around for days on end, cooped up with a bunch of animals. His wife and sons along with their wives were also in the ark at the time. What were his son's names?

Answer: Ham, Shem and Japheth

The three sons of Noah were indeed Ham, Shem and Japheth. Later, after their journey on the ark, God instructed them to go and re-populate the entire earth. That process is still on-going, and everyone alive can trace their ancestry back to one or the other of these children of Noah.
