Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the time Deborah and Barack lived, God was allowing the Canaanites to attack Israel with their chariots of iron. Why did God let the Canaanites mistreat the Israelites for over twenty years?

Answer: They were worshiping false gods and idols.

During the time Deborah and Barack were alive, God was allowing the Canaanite army to attack the Israelites because they were serving idols and false gods. The Canaanites were lead by a general named Sisera, who had 900 chariots of iron. They would come and steal food from the Israelite farms. Sometimes they would even take women and children to be their slaves.

However when the Israelites told God they were sorry, God listened. He started putting together a plan to save them.
2. Deborah was the first female judge in Israel. Where did people come to find Deborah when they needed advice or help?

Answer: underneath a palm tree

Deborah was the only female judge recorded in Bible history. People came to her where she judged underneath a palm tree. She would give people advice, make decisions, judge cases, but most importantly, she would tell the people what God wanted them to hear.
3. God told Deborah it was time to fight and to tell a man named Barack that God wanted him to lead their people into battle. Deborah told Barack the Lord would give him victory! Why was Deborah disappointed by Barack's response to God's message?

Answer: He said he would only go with her and did not trust what God had said.

Deborah told Barack to get 10,000 men ready and lead them into battle. She told him God promised to give the enemy into his hands near the river Kishon. However Barack told her he would only go if she came with him. Deborah was sad because Barack did not trust God enough to go by himself. Deborah agreed but told Barack that because he would not go alone, God would give the victory into the hands of a woman.
4. General Sisera, the leader of the enemy army, quickly found out that Barack had raised an army. Where did he meet Barack and Deborah for battle?

Answer: on a mountain

General Sisera gathered his armies together and met Deborah and Barack on Mount Tabor. The mountain became the place where the battle began. For General Sisera, who had many iron chariots, the mountain was a perfect spot. For the Israelites, it was a very hard place because they had to fight on their own two feet.

They didn't have very strong weapons, horses or chariots to help them in battle. However, they had God on their side.
5. General Sisera attacked Barack and his men with his chariots of iron. What simple form of weather did God use to stop General Sisera and his men?

Answer: rain

God made it rain, and the rain made it so muddy the iron chariots wouldn't work. The Canaanite army had to run away on foot! Barack and his men were on foot and easily chased the enemy soldiers all the way to the River Kishon. They captured the enemy soldiers and the ones that tried to escape were drowned by the river.
6. General Sisera panicked when he saw Barack and the Israelites capturing his men in the battle. What did General Sisera do when he realized he had lost the battle?

Answer: He fled to a nearby tent.

General Sisera panicked and ran for his life! He tried to find a place to hide and went to a nearby tent. He knew if the Israelites found him, he would be captured and possibly killed. He told the servants of the people who lived in the tent to keep him hidden and keep it a secret.
7. General Sisera met a woman named Jael. What did she give him to drink that made him very sleepy?

Answer: milk

Jael promised to keep General Sisera safe from the Israelites. She saw that he was very tired and gave him a place to rest. When General Sisera asked her for some water, she gave him a bowl of milk to drink. The warm milk soon had General Sisera sleeping like a baby.
8. Although Barack and Deborah fought very courageously and captured many men, they did not get to kill General Sisera. God kept his promise and let a woman kill the general.

Answer: True

God had told Barack and Deborah that a woman would have the victory. Jael waited until the General fell asleep, then she killed General Sisera by herself. When Deborah and Barack found Sisera, he was dead as a doornail. Deborah praised God for saving them from their enemies!
9. Deborah, Barack and the Israelites had a major celebration when they found out their enemy was dead! What did Deborah and Barack do to record the event in Israelite history, so everyone would remember?

Answer: They wrote and sang a song.

Deborah and Barack celebrated by singing a song on how God had delivered the Israelites from their enemies. In the song they praised the tribes of Israel who had fought so courageously in the battle. They also sang of how General Sisera's men were defeated and how the general was killed.
10. After Deborah and Barack had victory, God blessed the land. The Israelites never went back to serving idols and God protected them from their enemies.

Answer: False

God gave the land peace afterwards for forty years after Deborah and Barack had their great victory. As long as Deborah and Barack were alive, God blessed the people because Deborah and Barack taught them how to do what was right in God's eyes. However after they died, the Israelites turned back to doing evil. God had to let enemies to attack them again, but always raised up a hero when they repented.

There were many more heroes in the Bible that came and helped the Israelites follow God.
