The book was published in September 1947. It was illustrated by Clement Hurd. In 2007 the book was voted one of the "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children" by the National Education Association.
2. The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Answer: Eric Carle

Carle also served as the illustrator on this classic children's book. The book was first published in June, 1969.
U.S. President George W. Bush read the book to students in 2000 and told them it was his favorite book as a child.
A video game called "The Very Hungry Caterpillar's ABCs" was released more than 40 years after the book.
3. Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel

Answer: Virginia Lee Burton

Originally published in 1939, the book was one of my personal favorites as a child. Burton also illustrated the book.

A 12-year-old friend of the family, Dick Berkenbush, came up with the idea for how to conclude the book.
4. A Bear Called Paddington

Answer: Michael Bond

The Paddington series started with this book in 1958. There were eight short stories in the first book.

Bond, when not working as an author, was a cameraman on the BBC children's show "Blue Peter" for a number of years.

The book of poetry was first published in 1974. The audio book version, released in 1983, won the Grammy for Best Recording For Children.
6. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

This book was released in 1997. The book was published as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" when it came to the United States. It kicked off a seven-book, eight-movie franchise.
7. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Answer: Roald Dahl

The book was twice adapted into a movie. The movies were under the same name as the book in 1971, and "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" in 2005.

It was first published in 1964.
8. Charlotte's Web

Answer: E. B. White

The book was first published in 1952. Gart Williams was the illustrator. There was an animated movie based on the book in 1973, and a live-action film in 2006.
9. The Cat in the Hat

Answer: Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss, or his birth name Theodore Geisel, wrote an illustrated the book. It was first released in 1957 and was followed by a sequel called "The Cat in the Hat Came Back". It was adapted into both a live-action and an animated movie.
10. Where the Wild Things Are

Answer: Maurice Sendak

Winner of the Caldecott Award, this was one of my favorite books as a child. It was first published in 1963. Sendak wrote and illustrated it. He was also the cover artist.
