Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Emily Starr's father died, her deceased mother's family, the Murrays, came to decide Emily's fate. What did Emily do to upset them?

Answer: Eavesdrops

Emily wanted to know what her fate would be now that her father has died. She hid under the table to hear what was going to happen to her. Unfortunately the family said more than one harsh thing about her and Emily cried out in anger and pain. Emily was reprimanded for eavesdropping. Emily was an only child and had not been exposed to people, other than Ellen and her father, which was why she did not realise that it was an inappropriate thing to do.
2. What was the awful way that the Murray family decided on where Emily was to live?

Answer: Lottery

As the family could not agree on who would look after Emily they decided to have a paper lottery. Emily would pick a piece of paper with a name on it and that person would be with whom she would live. Emily picked Aunt Elizabeth's name, so off to New Moon she went.
3. After New Moon was decided as Emily's new home, Aunt Elizabeth would only allow her to take one of her two cats. Which cat was chosen?

Answer: Saucy Sal

Although Mike was Emily's favourite cat he was also the best looking. Emily decided that Ellen would look after Mike but would not do the same for Saucy Sal. Therefore Emily chose Saucy Sal to take to New Moon.
4. Emily's first day at school was not a happy experience as she was teased by the girls and was even presented with a dead snake as a gift. Which girl was the first to make friends with Emily?

Answer: Rhoda

After Emily received the gift of the dead snake Rhoda felt guilty and stayed behind and apologised. Rhoda asked Miss Bramwell, the teacher, to allow Emily to sit next to her. Thus the start of their friendship. Over the following weeks Emily fitted in with the other girls and school became a pleasurable place.
5. Before long it became apparent that Rhoda was not a true friend. Emily then met with Ilse, the wild child of the local doctor. Their first fight was caused by what?

Answer: Emily wanted a parlour in their clubhouse

Aunt Elizabeth punished Emily by locking her in the spare room. Emily was so scared that she escaped the room through the window and ran away to Lofty John's bush, where she met Ilse. They struck up a friendship and enjoyed each other's company and started to build a playhouse.

The fight came about when Emily wanted a parlour and Ilse did not. Ilse became angry easily but also calmed down quickly and did not hold grudges. Emily thought her friendship was over only to find that this was not the case.
6. One of the things that Emily missed most was her old account book. After a time Emily received some post papers to write on. What kind of writing did Emily think she was going to be famous for?

Answer: Poetry

Emily said that she wrote poetry even though she never had. To make sure it was not a lie Emily started to write poetry. Emily really enjoyed writing it and thought that she was good at writing it as well.
7. Emily always wanted to explore the well near Blair Water but was scared of the English bull in the field. One day Emily went there and she could not see the bull so went into the field to explore the well. The bull suddenly charged at Emily. Who saved her?

Answer: Perry Miller

This was the first meeting with Perry, who later became an assistant to Cousin Jimmy, and lived at New Moon. Perry was a strong character, stubborn, smart and a hard worker.
8. Early in the book there was an incident with Emily and Lofty John about an apple. It escalated and even Aunt Elizabeth got involved. As a result Lofty John decided to cut down the wood that was New Moon's protection. Who did Emily go to for assistance?

Answer: Father Cassidy

Father Cassidy assisted in convincing Lofty John to rethink his position with Emily and New Moon. Emily and Lofty John became friends again when they realised they both had similar thoughts and morals.
9. Beatrice Burnley, Ilse's mother, was thought to have run away. This was not true and Emily knew the truth when ill with fever. What happened to Beatrice?

Answer: Fell down a well

During Emily's stay at Wyther Grange with Great Aunt Nancy, she discovered the mystery of Ilse's mother. The story always worried Emily and she did not believe it was true. Emily became ill and during her fever she asked Aunt Laura to check the well for Ilse's mother. Emily realized Aunt Laura was only placating her by agreeing to check the well out, so she then asked Aunt Elizabeth. Emily knew Aunt Elizabeth was very strict and inflexible but she always kept her word. True enough they found Beatrice's body at the bottom of the well. Of course Dr Burnley suddenly re-entered the life of the living and became a caring father to Ilse.
10. Throughout "Emily of New Moon" Emily wrote letters to her father. In the final part of the book Emily decided to write in the form of a diary.

Answer: True

Emily's teacher Mr Crawford assesses her poetry and short stories and gave her encouragement. After the session Emily decided that she would continue her writing as a diary not as letters to her father.
