This was the first of Elinor M. Brent-Dyer's Chalet School books that I read and it is still one of my favourites. How much can you remember about the reformation of a difficult new girl?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Eustacia's aunt?

Answer: Margery

Margery Trevanion lived in Taverton, South Devon, England, with her five sons. She went to care for Eustacia as her father was dying, but did not get on well with her niece.
2. Where had Eustacia lived with her father and mother?

Answer: Oxford

Eustacia did not want to go and live in Devon with her aunt. She felt that she would be more than capable of running her father's house even though he had just died.
3. Which 'old girl' marries at the start of the story?

Answer: Bernhilda

Bernhilda married Kurt von Eschenau. They were going to live in Lyons, France, which saddened their friends at the school, as they would not see them very often.
4. Who was the Head Girl in this book?

Answer: Mary Burnett

It was Mary's last term at school. She was leaving because her family needed her at home.
5. Which of the following did Eustacia complain about when Jo showed her to her dormitory?

Answer: All of these

Eustacia thought that the stove used to heat the room in winter was unhealthy, as was the feather bed she was expected to sleep in. She also objected to Jo's use of the word 'splasheries' for the bathroom, which she thought was slang.
6. In which subjects did Eustacia excel?

Answer: Classics and maths

Her father had made sure she had an excellent knowledge of the subjects he considered important. When she got to the Chalet School, Eustacia found that she was to work with the fifth form in classics and maths. Her other subjects were weak, so she was to be with the fourth form for other lessons.
7. Who said that Eustacia was 'a rotten little sneak and spy and prig'?

Answer: Margia

Margia said this when Eustacia had been trying to tell tales and get the girls into trouble. Margia was a leader amongst the fourth formers, and after Eustacia's sneaking, she said that the other girls should not talk to Eustacia.
8. Eustacia took the key to which room from Jo's desk?

Answer: The library

Eustacia loved reading and had been looking for somewhere she could read in peace. She had overheard Jo say that she had put the key there, and so decided that she would borrow it and read in the library. She added to her sins by taking a book from the staff shelves to read.
9. Where were the English and American girls to go for half term?

Answer: Fulpmes

Miss Wilson and Miss Stewart were to take a small group of girls to Fulpmes, near the Stubai glacier, for the half term holiday. Amongst the girls going there were Jo and Eustacia, and Jo's little adopted sister, Robin Humphries.
10. Which part of her body did Miss Wilson injure at the Stubai glacier?

Answer: foot

When a blizzard threatened, Miss Wilson told the girls that they should hurry down from the glacier. She had been helping Eustacia along, then Jo came to see if she could help so that they would get undercover faster. Eustacia jerked away from Jo's hand and Miss Wilson slipped, twisting her foot in the process.
Look out for part 2 of this quiz, to find out what happened to Eustacia before she could become a true Chalet girl.
