A Chalet Girl from Kenya Trivia Quiz

Maisie Gomme, now Maisie Scott, is a former pupil at St Scholastika's, the school which first appeared in 'Rivals of the Chalet School'. She is mainly remembered for being very pretty, but not very bright. She left before the merger with the Chalet School in 'The New Chalet School'.

Her letter reveals that she married after leaving school and moved out with her husband to Kenya, to live on a coffee plantation. Because of the political situation, they don't think it's safe for Jo, and send her to the Chalet School. Maisie has found out about the new location through her old friend Gipsy Carson.

Her letter is full of underlined words, much to Joey's irritation.

Josette is asked to look after Jo as they are the same age. She discovers that Jo is named after her aunt Joey, and finds this funny as she herself is also named after Joey. Jo tells her about her background in Kenya and how her mother was at St Scholastika's, and Josette fills her in about what happened to St Scholastika's after Maisie Gomme left. Madge later writes that she is happy Josette has made a special friend. (Maeve is actually Mollie and Dick Bettany's daughter.)

Leila asks for Con, and Jack promises to bring her to the San, though he has reservations about it as Con is still young. However, he brings her to the San and tells her to talk to Leila and help her relax and go to sleep. Con talks to Leila about the Maynards' dolls' houses and how Tom Gay and Peggy Bettany helped make them.

It pays off, as Leila is able to sleep peacefully. Leila's mother thanks Con tearfully, to Con's embarrassment.

In her letter to Maisie, Jo describes the form's excursion. On the Friday, they go to a market and have a picnic in Gruyères Valley, and visit the old town of Morat in the afternoon, where a battle was fought between the Burgundians and the Swiss. They also visit Lausanne, Montreux and Geneva. On their last night, they go to a restaurant to have fondue.

The gymkhana is Mary-Lou Trelawney's idea, the flower tableaux is Barbara Chester's, and Josette Russell comes up with the flower show. The flower show is rejected at first, particularly by Ruth Wilson - who has a grudge against Josette - but Veronica suggests having it on the lawns, the gymkhana on the tennis courts, and a show of many nations, or 'pierrot show' (Jo Scott's idea) in the garden at Freudesheim, the Maynards' house.

The rock garden is proposed as the setting for the flower tableaux.

While the girls like Kat Gordon's idea of a tennis game in fancy dress, they decide to save it for another occasion.

After the prefects' meeting, Jo comes out of her form room and bumps into Ruth, knocking her into a wall and damaging her hat. Ruth is furious with Jo, as her hat is damaged and she will have to write home to ask for money for a new one. Julie is talented at sewing, and manages to fix it to an extent, but tells Jo off for being careless. Jo's bad day continues when Herr Laubach criticises her art and insults the class in general, and Miss Moore tells her off for not knowing what loess is in a geography test.

Jo suggests that the girls stand outside Leila's window and sing to her, an idea which Vi Lucy also suggests. Mary-Lou thinks they should write her notes, and Lesley Bethune suggests giving her flowers. A group of girls, led by Mary-Lou, go to Miss Annersley and make their proposal.

While Miss Annersley is fine with them giving Leila flowers and notes, she suggests they save the singing for another time, as Leila may still be very weak and tired, and needs to be kept quiet while she recovers from surgery.

Answer: The Mau Mau Uprising

Joey is at home listening to the radio when she hears that there has been a Mau Mau attack in the Fort Hall area, and that a farmer, Paul Scott, and his wife have gone missing. Joey is worried, and she and Jack debate over whether to tell Jo. Jem Russell sends a cable the next day saying that Maisie has been found, but is badly injured and will be taken to hospital in Nairobi. Paul is still missing, and Jem fears that he may have been murdered. Joey goes to tell Jo, and Jo collapses in tears and has to rest up at Freudesheim. Luckily, Paul turns out to be alive - he writes to Jo and tells her what happened.

His attackers left him for dead and he tried to crawl to safety, as he had injured his foot, but fell into a pit. The police later find him and take him to hospital. Maisie has a nervous breakdown, and she and Paul decide to leave Kenya.

Answer: Emerence Hope

Emerence Hope, the naughty Australian girl who arrived in 'Shocks for the Chalet School', takes advantage of Miss Wilmot being distracted to stray off the path. She sees a big clump of moss and tries to go for it, but gets her foot stuck in a crevice and falls over. Jo grabs hold of Emerence's ankle, and Miss Wilmot makes a lasso with Mary-Lou's Guide cord and manages to get it round Emerence's waist. Between them, Jo, Mary-Lou and Miss Wilmot manage to drag Emerence to safety. Jo has go to the school san, as holding onto Emerence has hurt her arms and shoulders. Jo is later awarded for her bravery with the Margot Venables Prize.

Answer: Bruno, the Maynards' dog, knocks her over.

Bruno is supposed to be staying with the Graves, but he somehow escapes and charges across the Maynards' lawn, where the 'pierrot show' is being held. Unfortunately for Janet, he crashes into her while she's dancing, and she falls onto her pipes, smashing them. He also knocks Joey off her chair.

Other songs performed at the 'pierrot show' are 'Ron-Ron-Ron' and 'Malbrouck S'En Va T'En Guerre' by a group of French girls in peasant outfits, and the 'Fairy's Lullaby' by Catriona Watson, who is Scottish. A group of English girls perform some country dances and Clare Kennedy, who is Irish, performs a jig.
