Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the spell Hermione uses attempting to defeat the snake Nagini in Godric's Hollow that breaks Harry's wand?

Answer: Confringo!

Hermione tries to save Harry & herself from Voldemort and his snake with "Confringo!" - a blasting spell - but she is scared and running at the time so she inadvertently damages Harry's wand beyond repair as the two are running for their lives.

"Reducto!" and "Colloportus!" are real spells in the HP world.

"Melamice!" is just something I made up. I don't even know what it means. Let me know what you think it should do.
2. What is the name of Rita Skeeter's "Daily Prophet" interviewer concerning Rita's risque biography on Albus Dumbledore?

Answer: Betty Braithwaite

Betty Braithwaite is the interviewer who writes about Rita Skeeter's book. Her name is mentioned a few times when Harry reads the article in the text.

Bathidla Bagshot was Dumbledore's neighbor, history writer, and friend to the Dumbledore family. It is revealed later that as Ms. Bagshot grew older & more senile, Rita Skeeter used implied magical tricks to get her to talk about the Dumbledores' private history.

Ira Billingsby and Birdy Bethdrop are made up names.
3. Why does Vernon Dursley think Harry is trying to trick him into going into hiding?

Answer: Vernon thinks Harry wants to steal the Dursley's house

Vernon stays up half the night thinking & decides that Harry is trying to get rid of the Dursleys so he can steal their home and sell it. "House prices are sky-rocketing around here! You want us out of the way and then you can do a little bit of hocus pocus and the deed will be in your name!" roars Vernon.

It takes Dudley believing that Harry is just trying to protect them to move Petunia and Vernon.
4. Hermione modifies her parent's memories so they don't remember her, to protect them from possible Death Eaters' questions and/or torture. To what country does she make her parents think they want to escape?

Answer: Australia

Hermione modifies her parent's memory so the Death Eaters can't find them or interrogate them about her or Harry. Hermione makes her parents believe their life's ambition has been to move to Australia, and they have no memory of having a daughter. Hermione sacrifices much so that she may do what she feels is right. Ironically, for the greater good, she memory-wipes her parents, so if she should fail they won't be harmed or sad. "For the Greater Good" was Grindelwald's basic philosophy for doing harmful things to other people.
5. What is the name of the book that gives explicit instructions on how to make a horcrux?

Answer: Secrets of the Darkest Art

Hermione uses the summoning charm to pull the dark magic books that cover horcruxes from Dumbledore's office after his demise. "Secrets of the Darkest Art" is the title of the book that gives explicit instruction on how to make a horcrux. She determines that the book must have already been in the library before Dumbledore was headmaster, which is how Voldemort became aware of the spell when he was a student.
6. How do you repair your soul if you've created a horcrux and wish to make your soul complete again?

Answer: experience sincere remorse

This is according to the book Hermione retrieves from Dumbledore's office, "Secrets of the Darkest Art". The book explains how to make a horcrux and how to fix a damaged soul. True remorse is the only way to repair your soul once you have split it and made a horcrux. The process is described as incredibly painful.
7. Harry sees a family photo of Dumbledore's family when Dumbledore was young, in the 'Daily Prophet'. The photo features Albus, Aberforth, Ariana, the Dumbledore father Percival, and Kendra, the mother. How does Harry describe Kendra, the mother?

Answer: resembling an American Indian

Harry notes, when seeing the photo of the younger Dumbledore family, that Kendra Dumbledore resembles a Native American woman. Harry was just learning about the complicated history of Dumbledore's family. He is shocked to find that Kendra and her boys resided in Godric's Hollow like Harry's own late parents. Harry wonders why Dumbledore never mentioned that their families were from the same place.
8. What exclamation does Hermione shriek when she learns that Snape is to be the new Headmaster of Hogwarts?

Answer: Merlin's pants!

Hermione exclaims "Merlin's pants!", an apparently strange expression that takes Ron and Harry aback when they hear her utter the words. Later, Ron makes a few references in jest about Hermione's apparent use of a funny swear.

"Merlin's beard!" is said a lot throughout the text by other characters as an exclamation, but is not used here. The other phrases are uttered by Hermione at various times throughout the series.
9. How does the trio (Harry, Ron, Hermione) get Reg Cattermole out of the way so Ron can impersonate him in the Ministry?

Answer: Puking Pastilles (A Weasley twins joke shop item)

Hermione, who has already transformed into a ministry worker, offers Reg Cattermole some of the Weasley twin's puking pastilles, which make Reg violently ill. Unbeknownst to Harry, Ron, and Hermione, Reg Cattermole's wife is having her trial for being a muggle born that afternoon. The trio end up having to save her from a cruel fate.
10. Harry and Lord Voldemort share a wand core (Fawkes' phoenix tail feather). What kind of wood were the two wands made from?

Answer: holly & yew

Though they share "brother" twin cores, Tom Riddle's and Harry's wands are made of different wood - yew and holly. Both use several different wands as the story progresses, but the core brother wands are essential to the need to use different wands.

Further trivia - Harry uses throughout the series his original holly wand, vine wood (Hermione's wand), a stolen blackthorn wand, Draco's hawthorne wand, and finally the Elder wand to repair his original holly one.

Voldemort uses his original yew wand, Lucius' elm wand, and the Elder wand until his death.
11. What is the last name of the FIRST graveyard headstone Harry notices when he and Hermione visit the graveyard at Godric's Hollow?

Answer: Abbott

Finally, after many months, Harry and Hermione make their way to Godric's Hollow, Harry's birthplace. On Christmas eve, no less, Harry & Hermione make their way to the graveyard. Harry sees an Abbott's headstone first. He thinks of Hannah Abbott,a friend from school and a member of "Dumbledore's Army", and wonders if it was a relation of hers.

He does see the Dumbledores & Peverell headstones ... but later in the story.
12. In the opening epigraphs, which author's quote states that friendships are immortal?

Answer: William Penn

The quotation comes from William Penn, a philosopher and the founder of Pennsylvania, from "More Fruits of Solitude".

"This is the comfort of friends, that though they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal."

This highlights and foreshadows the sacrifice that will be made from many of Harry's friends to help him on his quest. J.K. Rowling obviously chose that epigraph with great care, which is an apt reflection on the tone of the books, so it holds great importance since the friendship between Harry, Ron, and Hermione holds steadfast throughout the series - not to mention that it serves as a reminder for all who read Rowling's books to treasure one's friends in life.

Aeschylus has an additional opening quote.

James William Lacey or Henry Guild are just names I made up that sounded good.
13. When Ron is faced with destroying the locket horcrux, the horcrux defends itself by showing Ron his worst fears. What does the envisioned horcrux Hermione mock him for? (This is just horcrux Hermione, not the Tom Riddle Harry image.)

Answer: presumption

The horcrux image of Hermione only repeats one word of the Harry image's words as it mocks Ron for his fears. She repeats "presumption" in a hiss. She laughs at him for presuming she would prefer him over the famous Harry Potter and that Harry and Hermione would even want him to return.
14. What spell does Hermione use to break through the floor to get the trio out of trouble at the Lovegood's place?

Answer: Deprimo!

Hermione uses Deprimo! The other two are also real HP spells. "Dissendium!" is a charm to open passageways. Harry uses it when he sneaks into Honeydukes. "Waddiwasi!" is a charm that removes objects that are stuck.

I was just seeing if you paid attention from earlier about Melamice. Go to bed with no dinner if you picked it twice.
15. When the trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) is caught by the snatchers led by Fenrir Grayback, who does Hermione claim she is?

Answer: Penelope Clearwater

Penelope Clearwater was Percy Weasley's old girlfriend and the fake identity Hermione tries to run with. Penelope was most represented in the "Chamber of Secrets" as the Ravenclaw prefect who secretly met with the middle Weasley brother for prefect style fun. Katie Bell is a friend of Harry's and is on the Gryffindor quidditch team. Pansy Parkinson is the Slytherin girlfriend of Draco Malfoy.

Rebecca Jordan is Newt's real name from the 1986 "Aliens" movie.
