Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which planet in our solar system has moons named Ganymede, Europa, and Io?

Answer: Jupiter

The planet Jupiter is, by far, the largest planet in our solar system. Jupiter is known to have over 60 moons, some of which are larger than our moon. This planet is named after the Roman king of the gods who was believed to control the weather and the sky.
2. Which planet in our solar system has only one moon; the one shown here?

Answer: Earth

Earth is the only planet in our solar system that has only one moon. Earth is the only planet known to sustain life, partially because of the abundance of water on its surface. While our beautiful blue planet is a unique, irreplaceable world, it needs the utmost care to keep it healthy and balanced.
3. On which planet in our solar system would we find the tallest known volcano in our solar system?

Answer: Mars

Mars is a reddish appearing planet that has two moons. It has a very thin atmosphere, is covered in a fine coating of iron oxide dust, and has a pockmarked appearance due to the many impact craters on its surface. Just like the Earth, it appears to have two polar ice caps made of water. It is also home to the volcano Olympus Mons, which is over three times taller than Mount Everest.
4. Which object in our solar system is sometimes known as Luna?

Answer: The Moon

Other than our Earth, our moon, also known as Luna, is the only other celestial object to have been walked on by humans. The rocky satellite is the brightest object in the night sky and has a heavily cratered appearance. Our moon influences tides, the length of a day, and is vitally important to life on our planet.
5. Which planet in our solar system is named after the Greek god of the sky?

Answer: Uranus

Uranus is a gas planet that contains large amounts of hydrogen and helium. It is a frigid planet with many different types of ice, but is not thought to have water. This lovely blue planet has a ring system around it and at least 27 known moons orbit this icy world.
6. Which of these planets, shown in the photo, is the only one named after a female goddess?

Answer: Venus

Named after the Roman goddess of love, Venus is the brightest object in the sky next to the sun and the moon. It is the closest planet to earth as well as the closest in size. Despite these facts, Venus is, by far, the hottest planet in our solar system and is incapable of sustaining life as we know it.
7. Which of the following choices is NOT a planet?

Answer: Sun

This is a photo of our Sun, which is the star that all of the planets in this quiz orbit around. It is the largest object in our solar system and consists mostly of hydrogen and helium. It is thought to be about 4.6 billion years old and is the hottest, most fiery object in our solar system.
8. Which of the following fiery planets is the closer to the sun than Earth is?

Answer: Mercury

Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system, as well as being the closest to the sun. Because the planet has almost no atmosphere it has the greatest temperature variations of any of the planets. The speedy little planet can get as hot as 800F (427C) during the day making any kind of life very unlikely, if not impossible.
9. Which planet in our solar system is the farthest from the sun?

Answer: Neptune

The planet Neptune, named after the Roman god of the sea, is the farthest planet from the Sun. It was first observed in 1846, and its 13 moons were discovered in the 20th century. Neptune is known as an "ice giant".
10. What are the beautiful rings of Saturn believed to be made of?

Answer: Ice-covered rocks

Possibly the most recognizable planet in our solar system, Saturn is the second largest planet and is encircled by beautiful concentric rings made from different types of small particles covered in ice. Saturn has 62 known moons and is not believed to be capable of sustaining any kind of life forms.
