Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is Earth bigger than Jupiter?

Answer: No

Earth and Venus are similiar in size and Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter and Neptune are all known as gas giants because they are made out of gas.
2. What colour does Mars appear in the night sky?

Answer: Red

Mars is also known as the Red Planet and is named after The Roman god of war. Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love. Jupiter is named after the Roman master of the gods.
3. What are Saturn's rings mostly made of?

Answer: Ice, dust and rock

Saturn has the best ring system in the whole solar system. Some of the pieces of ice and rock are as big as a house and others are the size of a grain of sand. Galileo Galilei was the first to see Saturn's rings, although he did not know what they were.
4. You need a telescope to see Neptune from Earth.

Answer: True

Neptune is 4.3 billion km from Earth. The Hubble space telescope was launched in 1990 and takes very clear pictures because the photos are not blurred by Earth's atmosphere.
5. About how old is the Sun?

Answer: 4.5 billion years old

Since the Sun was born its temperature has risen by 300 degrees. The Sun should live to about 10 billon years old so it is now almost half-way through its life.
6. Which of the statements below is correct?

Answer: Our galaxy moves through space.

Our galaxy is called the Milky Way. All galaxies move through space. It is even possible for two galaxies to collide with each other.
7. Which year did humans first land on the Moon?

Answer: 1969

The first landing on the moon was made by Apollo 11 on 20 July 1969. The first man on the moon planted an American flag there. Because there is no wind on the moon the footprints made when they walked around are still there.
8. Astronauts can only eat food in a paste form from a tube when they are in space.

Answer: False

They eat three meals a day and can have fresh fruit and vegetables. All food is packaged and some food needs to have water added like macaroni and cheese, and spaghetti. Salt and pepper are in liquid form otherwise they will float away and could clog air vents.
9. When an astronaut is in the International Space Station, can they go out of the station?

Answer: Yes, if work needs to be done outside.

Astronauts need to go out into space if they need to repair somthing on the outside of the spaceship or the space station. Spacesuits must be worn so that astronauts are protected from the vacuum of space. In Russia they call astronauts cosmonauts.
10. Who was the first person to walk on the Moon?

Answer: Neil Armstrong

Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin was the second person to walk on the Moon. Eileen Collins was the first woman to command a Space Shuttle. No woman has landed on the Moon but it's probably only a matter of time before this happens, as there have been discussions about resuming missions to the Moon.
