Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Julian and Dick's friend Toby was quite famous for ...?

Answer: being a practical joker.

Toby was known to be a practical joker in the sense of scaring people with fake spiders, or getting someone to smell a fake rose buttoned to his shirt, and then squirting water into their face if they come close to it.
2. Benny's pet pig Curly was always...

Answer: running away.

Toby's little brother Benny was always chasing after Curly, and telling everyone that "Curly runned away". In fact, Benny used Curly's "runned away" as an excuse for him (Benny) to go wherever he wanted to.
3. The children decided to ignore the trespassing notice at the pool. What happened next?

Answer: A big man in an Air Force uniform shouted at them to get out.

A big, burly red-faced man in an Air Force uniform commanded them to get out of the pool. He was very angry because the children had deliberately disregarded the warning notice on Toby's advice, but Julian managed to calm him down by apologizing.
4. What did Mrs Janes do when the boys gave her two half-crowns?

Answer: She placed the money inside one of her worn-out shoes.

Mrs Janes almost couldn't believe her eyes when Dick gave her the money, and she quickly hid the coins in one of her old broken-down shoes.
5. While listening to Beethoven, how did the Five know that it was Jeff's plane they saw?

Answer: They recognized the number of his plane, which was painted underneath the wings.

While listening to Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony", Jeff flew his plane over the hill and the Five clearly saw the numbers '5 - 6- 9' painted underneath the wings. Earlier that day Jeff had told the Five that he wouldn't do any stunts if he saw them on the hill, because only idiotic beginners did things like that.
6. How did people know how to find their way around inside Billycock Caves?

Answer: Ropes were used to mark the allowed passages.

At the entrance to the caves, a sign warned people to stay inside the roped ways, because they could easily get lost down the unroped tunnels.
7. What did the Famous Five hear inside the caves?

Answer: High-pitched whistling combined with a howling sound.

A very sharp and piercing whistling filled the caves, increasing and decreasing in volume, until their eardrums almost couldn't bear it anymore. This was followed by a howling sound that grew louder and louder because of the echoes. The children ran to get out of the caves and escape from the sounds.
8. What eventually happened to the two airplanes that were flown away by the missing pilots?

Answer: They crashed into the sea.

On the six o'clock news the children heard that the planes had been seen crashing into the sea, and that there were plans to salvage the wreckage. However both pilots were missing, presumed to be drowned.
9. Why did Will Janes get into a fight with the two unknown men in the dark?

Answer: They owed him money which he hadn't received yet.

Will Janes always lost his cool when he though people took advantage of him. In this instance, he had helped the men by hiding them because he was promised money for doing so. Will wanted to be payed right away, and because they didn't, he knocked them both flat.
10. How did Julian, Dick and Toby escape from Will Janes and the butterfly men?

Answer: Timmy came in the nick of time to save the day.

Timmy suddenly appeared because George had allowed him to find the boys to see if they needed help - which they did. Timmy gave Will Janes a bite on his ankles, and Will and the butterfly men ran back into the cottage to get away from him. It was Will who threw a stone at the glasshouse in order to pretend that he was looking for a prowler.
11. How did the police realize that Jeff and Ray didn't fly the stolen airplanes?

Answer: Will Janes confessed that it was foreign pilots who flew the planes.

Will Janes confessed the details of the entire plot to the police. He told them that four other men were involved, two of them were foreign pilots and the other two men were used to capture Jeff and Ray during the stormy night.
12. When Benny disappeared, where was he eventually found and what was he doing?

Answer: Sitting at the entrance of Billycock caves waiting for his piglet.

Timmy led the children to Benny who was sitting outside Billycock Caves, waiting for his pig Curly who had gone inside.
13. How did everyone realize that the missing pilots were actually somewhere inside Billycock Caves?

Answer: The pilots wrote their initials and the word "caves" on Curly's body.

When Curly the pig came back, his body was printed with smudged black letters. The letters were seen to be the initials of the names of the pilots, and also the word "caves". Julian almost washed the letters off before they could be deciphered, because he initially thought somebody had played a bad joke.
14. When the children found the two missing airmen in the caves, what was wrong with Ray and why?

Answer: He had a twisted ankle because the villains dropped him down a hole.

The two men who captured Jeff and Ray pushed them down a hole inside the caves without any warning. Ray fell awkwardly and badly twisted his ankle.
15. What did Jeff promise the children?

Answer: A free flight in his airplane.

Jeff promised the children that he would take them into the clouds in his airplane as soon as possible. This was normally not possible but because the children had rescued him and his friend, he was sure that he would be able to organize this.
