Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following animals is found underwater and has a name that means "cover" or "blanket" in Spanish? It actually looks a bit like a blanket too!

Answer: manta ray

The manta ray is the only one of the living things listed that lives underwater. It is a thin sea animal, whose flat body extends out and does look somewhat like a blanket. They billow in the water when they swim, and they are quite beautiful once you get used to their strange appearance.

As far as the other options go, the praying mantis is an insect that looks like it is praying with its hands clasped; the mastodon is an extinct distant cousin of the elephant that was bigger and hairy; the kingfisher is a beautiful and fast-flying bird of prey that lives near the water.
2. This animal is one of my favorites. It carries its bedroom on its back and has a reputation for being somewhat slow moving, but it is very graceful in the water. Which sea animal is it?

Answer: sea turtle

Though all of the animals listed live in the water, only the sea turtle has a carapace that it can withdraw its head and legs into. This gives it a portable protective covering and home. Sea turtles live their lives at sea, except for females when they need to lay their eggs in the sand. Sea turtles are an endangered animal, and we have to do what we can to protect them.

The other options listed are the sea anemone, a carnivorous anchored sea animal that looks like a flowering plant; the octopus, an eight-limbed cephalapod that is also a carnivore; the lobster, a crustacean that lives on the floor of the sea.
3. Which sea animal that is always found in or underwater, is totally white, is very vocal, always wears a smile, and can swim backwards?

Answer: beluga whale

The beluga whale is a very interesting sea mammal. Though it is warm-blooded, it lives in some of the coldest temperatures in the ocean. It had a layer of blubber under its white exterior that helps it keep warm, and it is a very vocal animal. In addition, it always appears to be smiling. You wouldn't think that it would be as agile and graceful as it is, given its size, but it is the only animal of its kind that can swim backwards!

The other options do not fit the bill here. The great white shark is not as white as the beluga (it is actually gray on top and white on the bottom), and it cannot swim backwards. Sharks don't have vocal cords, so they are not vocal either! Polar bears do spend time in the water and they are white, but they do not live underwater. They do growl, however, so they are vocal. The unicorn is not found underwater, and is actually not found at all in the real world, since it is a mythical creature. There are no tales of it being able to swim backwards, either.
4. You may know this next animal that can be found underwater from the movie "Finding Nemo". What kind of an animal is Nemo and his dad?

Answer: clownfish

Both Nemo and his dad are clownfish, and they are typically white and orange in color. Clownfish are saltwater fish that live in close proximity to sea anemones, and for this reason they are good for aquarium life because they don't need a lot of space. All clownfish are born male, and they only develop into females if there is a shortage of females in a community. Interesting!

The other fish mentioned are different varieties of fish. Betta fish are freshwater fish, and they are generally not kept with other fish since the males are combative, earning them the name Siamese fighting fish. Angelfish can be freshwater or saltwater varieties, and they are also often found in home tropical fish aquariums. The saltwater varieties vary in color and are very beautiful. Puffers are never kept in aquariums as they are a poisonous fish that can inflate itself to twice its size when threatened, covered with poisonous spikes.
5. What sea animal sounds like it would be a good addition to the flavor of a peanut butter sandwich, but would actually be just the opposite?

Answer: jellyfish

A jellyfish is a gelatinous organism that can be big or small and lives in the ocean. It is very beautiful, because of the colors it can be, but it can be poisonous and its sting can be very painful. It would definitely not be good on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!

Of the other options listed, two are made up (jammer and marshmallow fish) and the last is a fish, but it wouldn't be good on a peanut butter sandwich, the swordfish. Its snout, which looks like a long knife or sword, sounds like it might be useful for cutting a sandwich, however!
6. Which sea animal looks a bit like an animal you could ride in an underwater race, if only you were tiny enough and could breathe underwater?

Answer: seahorse

The seahorse got its name because it does resemble a horse, at least in terms of its head. It is an interesting sea animal in that the male of the species is the one that carries the fertilized eggs in its tail or in a pouch in its body (depending on the species) until they hatch.

The sea anemone is an underwater predator that looks like a flower, which is where it got its name. The wolffish is a fish that has very large teeth that stick out of its mouth, even when it is closed, which is how it got its name. The sea robin is a deepwater fish that has beautiful wing-like fins that are multi-colored and move as if the fish were flying along the bottom of the sea. It wouldn't be much of a racing animal, but it is beautiful.
7. Which sea animal found underwater with five appendages sounds more like something you would find in the night sky?

Answer: starfish

The starfish is one of the most recognizable sea creatures. It indeed resembles a five-pointed star, and it has five appendages that can be regenerated when they are lost.

Though the moonfish sounds like a heavenly body, it doesn't have appendages like the starfish. It is round and thin, which must be the reason it got its name, looking like the shiny moon when seen from the side.

I made up the planetfish and the sea meteor.
8. Which sea animal doesn't much look like its name, but does catch its food in the same way as its namesake would, by staying very still and then opening its mouth at the exact right time and trapping it?

Answer: frogfish

All of the animals mentioned are sea creatures that can be found underwater and are named after land creatures that they share characteristics with. Only the frogfish catches its prey just like a frog does, however. Its coloring is not like a frog's, and the frogfish is normally white and orange to blend in with its surroundings. It actually looks like an anchored piece of coral and can remain very still until it finds its next meal.
9. Which of the following sea creatures might be known as the king of the underwater jungle, based on the name it was given?

Answer: lionfish

All of the creatures mentioned are sea dwellers that are found underwater, but only the lionfish shares its name with the king of the jungle. Lionfish got their name because of the beautiful mane-like extensions around their heads and bodies that make it look like they have the mane of a male lion.

They are not active hunters, like the lion, though. Their spikes are poisonous, which keep other predators away from them, and they can live a more peaceful and laid-back existence with this defense mechanism.
10. Which of the animals found underwater listed below sounds more like it could come out of a toolbox than the sea?

Answer: hammerhead shark

Only the hammerhead sounds like an implement from your toolbox. Its name is perfect for it, as it has a long horizontal part at the end of its head, and its eyes are on either end of the "hammer". This gives it great visibility in a variety of directions, allowing it to find prey more easily.

The other creatures listed all exist, and they were named because of their anatomy, but none is the namesake of anything that would be as good an addition to your tool collection as the hammerhead.
