Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The rice dish paella comes from what country?

Answer: Spain

Spain is famous for its paella to the point that many (to be fair, non-Spanish) people think it is the country's national dish. This is not correct; that honour belongs to the tortilla Espanola. Paella is more a provincial dish and belongs to the Valencia area of Spain.
2. Deer meat is known by what name?

Answer: Venison

Originally venison was used to describe meat from any animal that was hunted, not just deer. Creatures such as boars (wild pigs) hares and certain goats came under this name. The reason for this is that the word venison originated from the Latin word "venari", which means "to hunt". All the other options listed above are types of sausage.
3. What food is used as the base for guacamole?

Answer: Avocado

Guacamole is, basically, a dip. Originally it was simply avocado mashed with a little bit of sea salt. Nowadays items such as tomato, onion, garlic and either lemon or lime juice are also added. The dish originated with the Aztec people of Mexico which is appropriate when you consider that the first avocados were cultivated in South Central Mexico.
4. India is the world's largest producer of bananas.

Answer: True

Bananas are grown in some 120 countries around the globe. The world banana production is estimated to be around 86 million tonnes a year. India produces over 14 million tonnes a year on its own. And it's easy to see why. Apart from their advantageous climate for growing them in India, the banana is an excellent food crop.

They are low in price, high in nutritional value and can be eaten raw or cooked.
5. What food gathering method would you be involved in if you were using lures, reels, rods, hooks and nets?

Answer: Fishing

There are more ways to catching fish than simply using a fishing rod and line, which is called angling. Fish can also be caught by hand, by using a spear or by using a net or a trap. Fishing doesn't just limit you to only catching those creatures that have fins and gills such as snapper or herring, it also includes squid and octopus, clams and mussels, lobsters and shrimp and a range of other creatures including the sea urchin and the sea cucumber.
6. What "C" word is used to describe foods that are rich in starch such as breads and pasta?

Answer: Carbohydrates

The most commonly known carbohydrates are your grain foods such as bread, pasta and noodles but there are also foods such as potatoes, dried beans, lentils, sugar and even milk that can come under this banner. Many of the foods that we eat contain some form of carbohydrate within them.

For example, fruits will contain fructose. Carbohydrates are important as the body breaks these down to form simple sugars which it then uses as fuel to create energy for itself.
7. What is another name for maize?

Answer: Corn

Most historians believe that corn was first cultivated in Mexico over 10,000 years ago and this is one of the main reasons why it is used so much in Mexican cooking. It is used in so many dishes - think about tortillas, tamales, tacos, enchiladas, tostadas and, you guessed it, they all contain corn in some fashion.
8. Food preserves made from citrus fruits, sugar and water are generally known as what?

Answer: Marmalade

You will note that we used the term "generally" in the question. This is because in some places marmalade is still referred to as jam. However, there are features that do separate them and these are:
Marmalade is made using just the juice and the peel of citrus fruits (no flesh) boiled with sugar and water.
Jam contains the juice and the flesh of fruits (though generally not citrus). The flesh is usually chopped or pressed to activate the pectin that will make it set. This too is boiled with sugar and water.
Conserve is like jam but the flesh is not chopped, instead it is used whole. It is sometimes called whole fruit jam.
Curd, unlike the others above, includes beaten egg yolk within its recipe.
9. Dairy products are generally made from what common liquid?

Answer: Milk

Milk is usually the first source of food for babies until their bodies can adjust to eating solid food. Milk is loaded with nutrients, including lactose and protein. While we usually think of milk as the product that comes from the mammary glands of mammals, the term "milk" is also used to describe some liquids obtained from non-animal sources.

These include such items as soy milk, almond milk, rice milk and coconut milk.
10. Chiffon, marble and bundt are all types of what?

Answer: Cake

Ah, cake, glorious cake. It's good to finish the quiz off with something decadent. Cake is usually a mixture of flour, sugar, eggs and butter to which we can add icing, marzipan, chocolate, candied fruits, creams, jams, nuts and a whole range of other delicious ingredients.

In their early forms, cakes were simply breads that were slightly modified and have been enhanced ever since. Nowadays we have moved on from the basic cake recipes to create pastries, meringues, tarts and pies.
