Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jack's annoying little sister, Susie, once again finds out the Secret Seven's latest password, "Guy Fawkes". Jack swears he hasn't told her or written it down, but she shows up at the meeting anyway, says the password, and gets let in. How does Susie say she found it out?

Answer: Jack shouted "Guy Fawkes! Let me in!" in his sleep.

Susie warns Jack that she knows the password and he's sure she's making it up as he's told nobody. She turns up at the shed and gives the password. They let her in, expecting Colin, but are very cross with her. They make her sit in the corner watching them eat delicious food.
2. When Colin arrives, he has something exciting to say, so they make Susie leave. Scamper barks to tell the children Susie is still listening outside, but Peter tells him to be quiet. They try and whisper, but get louder and louder until Susie has certainly heard their conversation. What would Susie have heard Colin say?

Answer: On the way to the meeting he heard someone in the bushes crying out in pain. They knocked his torch from his hand and ran away. He found a notebook in the bush written in code.

Colin heard some people whispering in the bushes and then one of them cried out. He shone his torch to see what he could see, but someone knocked it from his hand and ran away. He didn't see who it was, but when he looked in the bushes he found a notebook written mostly in secret code.

Scamper barks to tell the children Susie is still listening outside, but Peter tells him to be quiet, so he gives up. It's only later that they realise she probably heard everything.
3. The notebook is mostly written in code apart from a list of stolen property and an appointment to meet the "gang" in a shed at the back of Lane's Garage at 5pm on Wednesday. The Secret Seven go along to see what the "gang" are up to. There are loud bangs coming from inside the shed. What do they see through the keyhole?

Answer: Susie and her friends blowing up paper bags and popping them

Silly Susie and her friends have set the Secret Seven up to make them look like fools. She giggles and gloats, and they get very, very cross! At first they won't let her out of the shed but then they let her out on the condition that she won't tell anyone about what's happened. How embarrassing!
4. The next day, Janet and Peter's father drives them to see a family friend where they eat lots of delicious food. He drives them back home and on the way he stops at the station for a moment. The children are drowsy in the back seat from eating too much. What happens next?

Answer: Two strange men get in the car and drive off with the children still in the back.

Peter thinks his dad is giving a friend a lift home at first, but then realises he doesn't know either of the men. He whispers to Janet to get down where they can't be seen. One of the men has a finger missing. The other one drops something in the car.

The men don't drive very far away before they leave the car and get out. Peter finds a telephone and calls his dad at the station - his dad hasn't realised the car has been stolen!
5. Now the Secret Seven have a real mystery to solve! They heard one man say "Get in touch with Q8061 at once. Tell him Sid's place, five o'clock any evening. I'll be there". Who were the men Peter and Janet saw? What does it all mean? The children search the car for clues. What do they find?

Answer: A button and a spectacles case with "Briggs. Renning 2150" written inside

Janet finds the spectacle case between the seats. Inside is written "Briggs. Renning 2150" which they know will be the name of the owner and his telephone number - he lives in Renning which isn't far. They also find a button, but Peter says it belongs to his father who has a button missing from his coat, and has probably been there ages.
6. The Secret Seven go to Renning to find the owner, Mr Briggs, but it turns out that he is not the man who stole the car. What makes Peter realise he is innocent?

Answer: Mr Briggs is a friend of Peter's dad, and he got a lift home the previous week.

Peter is very suspicious of Mr Briggs at first. When he says he has lost the spectacle case a week earlier, Peter says he can't have as they had only been lost the night before in his father's car. Mr Briggs asks who Peter's dad is and realises he knows him and got a lift home the previous week - just when the glasses case went missing. Mr Briggs is an innocent man and Peter feels a little foolish for being so suspicious.
7. They meet outside in Colin's summer house by candle-light. Peter gives everyone something to investigate, but Guy Fawkes' night is only a few days away. The children get to work making a Guy for the bonfire with some old clothes, and straw and newspaper to stuff the Guy. What happens next?

Answer: Scamper runs in and knocks over the candle, setting the straw on fire and burning their Guy.

Scamper has been in the kitchen trying to sample some delicious stew, and comes bounding into the garden where the children are working hard. He knocks over the bottle holding the candle in his excitement and sure enough, the fire catches some of the straw and newspaper and gets out of control.

The children fetch buckets of water from the pond and put out the flames, but their Guy is ruined. What a horrible end to a lovely evening. Nothing seems to be going right for the Secret Seven in this book!
8. Colin manages to find out about a place called "Sid's Cafe" - a dingy cafe where lorry drivers eat. Peter goes along just before five o'clock, but a man tells him to go away. Meanwhile, Colin has made a new Guy. Peter thinks it looks smashing - it could almost be a real person! What plan does Peter come up with?

Answer: Peter will dress up like a Guy. The other boys will take him outside Sid's Cafe where he can keep watch without looking suspicious.

Colin's friend Larry works in a garage, and a lot of lorry drivers pass though. Colin gets him to ask if they've heard of somewhere called "Sid's Place". Sure enough, they know of "Sid's Cafe" which is not too far away. When Peter goes to look around, a man thinks he is trying to steal fruit from his barrow and tells him to go away. If Peter could dress up as a guy and get the boys to prop him outside Sid's Cafe in a wheelbarrow, nobody would suspect a thing.
9. The boys go to Sid's cafe and Peter watches patiently. At last he sees two men; one has a finger missing and the other has lost a button from his coat - in Peter's dad's car! Peter tells George and Jack to follow them while he and Colin go back to their meeting shed. Which of these statements is NOT true?

Answer: The two men catch George and Jack following them and lock them in a warehouse.

Peter, dressed as a Guy, watches the cafe until he sees the two men who stole his dad's car. George and Jack follow them and hear them saying Sid has let them down and they should "go back to Q's" to tell him. The boys think one of the men might be an escaped prisoner, as his hair is very short and the men seem wary of policemen. They run from a policeman and steal another car with the number plate PLK 100.

Pam realises that "Q8061" might be a phone number belonging to someone with a name beginning with Q - it turns out to be a warehouse nearby owned by Mr Quentin.
10. Just as the meeting comes to an end, a policeman comes to the house, as he saw Jack and George around when the second car got stolen and wonders if they saw anything. The children tell him everything they know. The police have been looking for one of the men for a while and catch them all red handed in the warehouse along with the stolen car. What do the police call this 'wanted' criminal?

Answer: "Fingers"

"Fingers" got his name because he has part of his finger missing. The police are most grateful to the Secret Seven for solving another crime and the children look forward to an exciting Guy Fawkes' Night.
