Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There hasn't been a Secret Seven meeting for a while. Jack's little sister, Susie has found out their latest password, so Peter calls a meeting to choose a new one. The password is changed to "Beware". Another password is suggested but Jack won't let them use it because it's about Susie's annoying habit. What password do they NOT use?

Answer: Snooper

Susie gleefully tells Peter that she found the Secret Seven password written down on a piece of paper in Jack's handkerchief drawer. Six of the seven think "Snooper" would be a very good password and one they will remember, but Jack sticks up for his sister in the end. They have fun saying "BEWARE..." to each other in spooky voices and confuse poor Scamper.
2. While they wait for an adventure to come along, the children decide to practice their detective skills. They all go out to practice observing people and describing what they see. George puts on dark clothes, paints his face black and takes a toy truncheon along. He follows an old man getting off the bus, but another man is following George! What happens next?

Answer: The man takes George home and speaks to his parents

The man asks George what he's up to - he has seen George following the old man. He threatens to take George to the police station but in the end agrees to have a word with his parents. He makes it sound very serious when he talks to them, and George's dad gets angry.

He tells George he has to leave the Secret Seven if they are going to lead him into trouble. George is very cross with the man for interfering.
3. George attends a very sad meeting of the Secret Seven and tells them he has to leave! The children vote to let him know about Secret Seven business even though he isn't a member any more. The children appoint a new member of the Secret Seven to replace George. Who do they have as the new member?

Answer: Peter and Janet's dog, Scamper

Susie might be keen to join the Secret Seven but they will do anything to avoid letting her join! Scamper is the natural choice as he is already an 'unofficial' member and has proved himself to be very useful. Don't you agree, Scamper? "Woof!" Scamper gets a Secret Seven badge pinned to his collar.
4. The next night they meet to discuss the results of their observations. Janet seems to be the only one who has done some really good work. She describes three people she saw at the train station: an old woman, a young nurse and very peculiar man. How does she describe the man?

Answer: His hat covered his face. He was bent over, walked with a limp and had a deformed hand

Janet is praised for her wonderful powers of observation. The children easily recognise the old lady she describes, and feel they could recognise the nurse and the old man if they saw them. The old man sounds really unusual with his deformed hand and limp. I think we might see him again soon! Later in the book, Janet wins a prize at a birthday party for remembering 20 objects on a tray - smashing.
5. Peter and Jack say they hid in a tree and watched, but they didn't see much. A man drove up in a car and got out. He had a poodle with him that looked like it was car-sick. After a while the man drove off again. The car registration was PSD 188. Jack says he remembered this easily by thinking of a funny phrase. What was it?

Answer: "Pretty Sick Dog"

Peter and Jack hide in an Elm tree on a quiet road. They don't see much apart from the man who stops to let his dog have a breather when he feels car sick. Later in the book, this turns out to be quite important and Jack is able to recall the number of the car by thinking of the poor dog - he was 'pretty sick'.
6. While Colin is doing his shadowing task, he follows a man out walking with a bull terrier dog. The dog does not look happy. The man takes the dog down an alleyway and then comes back out without it! What happens next?

Answer: Colin goes down the alleyway and there is no sign of the dog

Colin goes down the alleyway in the dark and finds that it is a dead end. At the end of the alley is a sort of junk yard and there is no sign of the dog anywhere. Colin searches every inch of the yard and cuts his hand, but doesn't find the dog. He tells the others and they agree to investigate it the next day in the daylight.
7. The boys go to find the man who followed George - Mr Taylor. He doesn't care that George had to leave the Secret Seven, and tells them to "clear off". Afterwards, Colin says he is the same man he saw with the disappearing bull terrier! They go down the alley to look for the dog. What do they find that Colin didn't see?

Answer: A large 'coal hole' that was hidden under a box

The yard has high walls and dusty windows overlooking it. The boys pretend they are looking for their ball but can't find any trace of the dog. Then underneath a box, they find an iron lid leading to a coal hole. They manage to get it open but it's too dark to see anything, even with a torch.

They think about going down but it's getting too late. Colin has a brainwave and whistles down the hole - in the distance they can hear dogs barking!
8. The building looks empty apart from a light in one window. The boys see a man come out of the front door and catch a bus to Pilberry. He is bent over, walks with a limp and has a deformed hand! They head home to tell the others but another man almost walks into them. It's Mr Taylor, carrying a dog lead, but no dog! What happens next?

Answer: They follow Mr Taylor and he catches them. He says he'll take them to the police but doesn't.

They follow Mr Taylor, but he hides in a doorway then catches them. He threatens to take them all to the police station if they keep following him, and Peter tells him to do so. Suddenly Mr Taylor doesn't seem so keen to go to the police because he is really the one who has done something wrong.
9. The children work out that Mr Taylor is stealing expensive breeds of dogs and must be hiding them somewhere in the cellar. He can't be working alone. The girls check the newspapers for 'lost and found' notices, and the boys go and explore the cellar. They find a room full of unhappy dogs in cages! What happens next?

Answer: The boys end up locked in cages too

The boys venture into the cellar by torchlight with Scamper, and find a room with dogs in cages. The dogs are all okay, but not very happy. The old man with the deformed hand has been caring for them. He calls the pedigree dogs "lords and ladies"! He catches the boys just before his boss (Mr Taylor) arrives. Mr Taylor gets the old man to lock them all in cages, and kicks Scamper in the mouth! Scamper yelps and scampers off to get help. If only there was someone nearby he could fetch...
10. At the end of the book, George is allowed to join the Secret Seven again. What makes his dad change his mind?

Answer: George's dad realises how great the Secret Seven are and how important George is to them

George saves the day! Since they kept him informed about what was happening, he went along to watch from outside the cellar and, of course, clever Scamper knew he was there all along. When Scamper calls for help he comes down the hole and lets them out of the cages before the boys all go to the police. George is allowed to rejoin the society after the police go to see his dad and tell him they have solved yet another crime, thanks to George!
