Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Secret Seven are unhappy to find the gardener clearing out the shed that they use for their meeting place. Where do they make their new meeting place for the Easter holidays?

Answer: In a hidden cave in a sand quarry

All the children suggest different places they could meet, but Peter and Janet come up with the best idea - a cave discovered by Scamper when out walking in the sand quarry on their father's land. I think they must be very rich to have their own quarry!
2. The children settle into their new meeting place but they begin to suspect that someone else has been there, eating their food and stealing Colin's 'Famous Five' books! They set up booby-traps to catch the person in the act. What trap do they set at the entrance?

Answer: thread dipped in honey and draped across the doorway

Colin says his cousin had done this trick to someone - they place thin thread across the doorway to the cave and dipped them in honey. When someone walks into them it would feel like cobwebs across their face - very unpleasant! It serves them right (especially as they suspect it is Jack's sister Susie!)
3. The next day they return and find the booby trap was not disturbed, but still someone has been inside and taken things. Scamper sniffs out a clue - an item that doesn't belong to any of the children. What does Scamper find?

Answer: An old notebook with the name Albert Tanner written inside

Scamper finds the notebook with the name inside it. Inside a pocket of the notebook they find a piece of paper - another note from someone called Ted. The Secret Seven abandon the cave after that and meet in Peter and Janet's summer house, although it is a bit of a tight squeeze.
4. They find out that Albert Tanner is going to be meeting up with a man called Ted that night, on a bench outside the Post Office. Colin and Jack go along and listen to their conversation. What does Ted tell Albert?

Answer: "The scarecrow. That's where it is. Look by the scarecrow"

Jack hides up a tree near the bench and Colin crouches behind it. Two men appear and sit on the bench. Just as they start talking, Colin sneezes and gets caught. The men 'box him round the ear' and send him away, but Jack hears what they say. At the next meeting, Colin proudly shows off the bruise on his face that he got from the man who hit him!
5. The next day, Jack tells the others what he heard. Peter says he knows of an old inn nearby with the same name. They get their bikes and ride over to the inn on the common. What do they find when they get there?

Answer: The inn has been closed for months. A woman is looking after it. Her husband is called Albert

The children arrive at the inn which is closed. A woman is hanging out the washing and they go and talk to her. She says it has been closed for a few months and she is looking after it. They ask if she knows Albert. She says Albert is her husband and points to an old man (not Albert Tanner). She says they should call him Mr Larkworthy!
6. The garden at the inn doesn't look like it has been touched - nothing is buried there. They need to look somewhere else. They split up and ride across all the local countryside. What are they looking for?

Answer: Every scarecrow they can find

They decide they must be looking for a REAL scarecrow and go off hunting for them all over the countryside. They split up into groups but nobody finds anything and they go home with nothing but muddy shoes!
7. Peter and Janet get their shoes muddy during the hunt. They explain to their parents what they have been doing. Their father says they should look in their own oat field - there are two robins' nests there. Where are the robins' nests?

Answer: In the jacket pockets of an old scarecrow

Peter's dad tells them "old James" has found two robins' nests in the pockets of the scarecrow in their own oat field. Old James is nearly blind, but he followed some footsteps into the field which led to the old scarecrow. Janet and Peter race down to the oat field and look at the ground there. They are too late - whatever was hidden has been dug up.
8. Another meeting is called after their disappointing progress. The children go back to the sand quarry with spades to dig around and Jack goes into their abandoned meeting place to get the torch he left there. What does Jack find inside?

Answer: His sister, Susie, and her friend Jeff

Jack had left his torch behind inside the cave so they head back to pick it up and dig around in the sand, as there is nothing else to do. Inside the cave, Jack is surprised to find his sister with her friend Jeff. Susie explains that they were hiding in the cave in case the Secret Seven showed up but something happened. Someone came out of the BACK of the cave and went out of the front entrance. For once, they can't be angry with Susie.
9. The Secret Seven investigate. Peter discovers a hidden entrance to a secret space where he finds all the things that were taken from them. He also finds what was buried in the oat field. What does he find?

Answer: A post bag full of registered envelopes

Peter finds a ledge in the cave and when he stands on it he can see a round hole. Through the hole he can grab onto a rope hanging down and climb up into a small room in the rock. There are their cushions which have been used as a bed, and some other things. There is also a post bag containing what look like registered envelopes.
10. Peter runs to get his dad and his mother calls the police. While they are waiting, Scamper finds something strange outside buried in the sand. What does Scamper find?

Answer: Albert Tanner

Albert Tanner has been hiding in the cave and is waiting outside for the children to leave. He buries himself in the sand, but that is no disguise for Scamper who sniffs him out. Peter recognises him and tells him they have found out what he has done.

The police inspector arrives and identifies Albert as a wanted man. He robbed a post office with a man called Ted Yorks. Both Albert and Ted used to work for Peter's father but he fired them for their dishonesty.
