Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the meeting at start of the book, Peter tells the children it will be the last meeting and he wants all their badges back. Why does he do this?

Answer: The holidays are nearly over and they will be going back to school

Peter says that nothing ever happens while they are all at school so there is no point keeping the group going. He wants to keep their badges so that nobody loses them.
2. The password at the first meeting is 'Pickled Onions' but this has to be changed because it gets shouted so loudly that Peter and Janet's mum hear. They change the password to the name of Jack's aunt's dog. What was the new password?

Answer: Cheeky Charlie

'Cheeky Charlie' turns out to be a great password later on in the book when it gets George out of a spot of bother!
3. Jack's sister, Susie, decides to make her own secret society because she can't join the Secret Seven. What does she call her group?

Answer: The Famous Five

Susie and four of her friends call their group The Famous Five after the 'Five books' (which are also written by Enid Blyton).
4. Before Susie's secret society meeting, she sees Jack hiding in a bush behind the summer house planning to eavesdrop. Susie decides to tell a made-up story about two men called "Stumpy Dick & Twisty Tom" who are going to meet that night. Where does she say they are going to meet?

Answer: Tigger's Barn

Susie meets her friends at the front gate and tells them Jack is hiding in the bush. She also tells them she will pretend she knows about something happening at 'Tigger's Barn', to send The Secret Seven on a wild goose chase.
5. Jack tells Peter what he has heard, but Peter doesn't believe Susie. Jack and George decide to go and investigate anyway. "Stumpy Dick & Twisty Tom" aren't there, of course, but who do they find instead?

Answer: Larry and Zeb

George and Jack arrive at the abandoned building just in time to hear the men signal to each other outside. They hide in a chimney just as Larry and Zeb come inside the building and go into the next room to talk.
6. Jack leaves George hiding in a chimney so he can go and listen to what the men are saying in the next room. What happens to Jack as he is listening to the men?

Answer: He falls into a cupboard and the door shuts behind him

Jack leans on a cupboard door which swings open. He falls inside and the door shuts behind him. He can't hear what the men are saying after that.
7. George gets scared when an owl flies past him out of the chimney. He goes to look for Jack. Everything has gone quiet so he whispers the Secret Seven password. What happens next?

Answer: The men think George has been sent by their boss to get a message

'Charlie' happens to be the name of the boss of the gang and Larry and Zeb think he has sent George to find out how the plan is going. George doesn't say much as he is so scared, so the men write a note and give it to George to take back to 'Charlie'.
8. The Secret Seven can't work out what all the clues mean and decide to give up and play with a toy train set instead. What part of the toy railway leads Janet to work out what the men are plotting?

Answer: The points - that make the trains change to a different track

While hiding in Tigger's Barn, Jack overheard the men talking about "points" as well as "six-ten" and "seven-twenty". When they are playing trains, Janet realises that "points" could refer to the points on a railway line, and "six-ten" and "seven-twenty" could be train times.
9. The Secret Seven head to the nearby railway station and ask some questions about the trains and how the points work. Why do they get told off by a policeman?

Answer: They are walking on the train lines and trespassing

The gang are investigating the railway yard. They are walking down the middle of the railway tracks and the policeman stops them and asks what they're up to. It's dangerous to walk on the railway lines and they are trespassing on private property. The policeman writes down all their names and addresses to tell their parents.
10. The bad guys work on the railway! They plan to steal expensive lead from a train and load it onto the back of a lorry. What does Peter take from the cab in the front of the lorry?

Answer: The ignition key so the lorry can't drive away

Peter swipes the key from the lorry cab and keeps it in his pocket while he goes to ring the police. He doesn't want the men to escape before the police arrive. Very clever, Peter!
