Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although not mentioned in the films, this ghost was indirectly responsible for saving Ginny Weasley's life in the book "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". What is the name of the Hogwarts History of Magic teacher who explained the legend of the chamber to Harry and his classmates?

Answer: Cuthbert Binns

Professor Binns is the only Hogwarts professor who is also a ghost. At Hermione's request, he told the students the story of the Chamber of Secrets (a task that was given to Professor McGonagall in the movie). This information helped prepare Harry and Ron for their eventual trip to the chamber to rescue Ginny, destroying one of Voldemort's horcruxes in the process.

Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, also known as Nearly Headless Nick, is the Gryffindor house ghost. Sir Patrick is known for organizing the Headless Hunt and Moaning Myrtle is a former student who haunts the second floor girls' restroom.
2. During a trip to the zoo in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", Dudley's best friend Piers alerted Uncle Vernon when he saw Harry engaging in what rather unusual behavior?

Answer: Talking to a snake

Like the rest of Dudley's gang, Piers Polkiss enjoyed tormenting Harry and he wasted no time in telling the Dursleys that he had witnessed Harry communicating with a boa constrictor. After the snake escaped and Dudley ended up trapped in the creature's former home, poor Harry was given one of his worst ever punishments.

Although we can probably assume that Piers is one of the boys shown with Dudley at the beginning of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", he is not named in any of the movies.
3. This poltergeist was featured in all seven Harry Potter books but didn't make the cut when characters for the films were chosen.

Answer: Peeves

Peeves the poltergeist made his grand entrance early in the first book and spent his time vandalizing classrooms, throwing things at students, and yelling insults while he raced around the halls of Hogwarts. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment was in the fifth book when, with a discreet tip from Professor McGonagall, he loosened a chandelier merely to annoy Dolores Umbridge.

Although he didn't have a role in any of the major plot lines, most fans agree that his presence in the films would have provided comic relief.

Hermes and Arnold were pets of Weasley children and Nagini was, of course, Lord Voldemort's snake.
4. In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", a house elf named Winky unintentionally aided a Death Eater in setting up Voldemort's latest plan to kill Harry. To her horror, she was immediately sacked by the patriarch of the family she served. What was the surname of this family?

Answer: Crouch

Poor Winky. Her only desire was to be a good servant but when she accompanied Barty Crouch Jr to the World Quidditch Cup he was able to escape her watchful eye so that he could gain access to the school by impersonating a Hogwarts professor. Crouch Sr was furious and after publicly humiliating her for her mistake, promptly freed her by presenting her with clothes. Unfortunately, Winky had no desire to be a free elf and spent the rest of the year drowning her sorrows in butterbeer.

Crouch's poor treatment of Winky inspired Hermione to start the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, aka S.P.E.W.
5. While Arthur Weasley was a patient at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, a fellow Ministry of Magic employee died after being strangled by a deadly plant known as Devil's Snare. Who was the unfortunate man whose sad demise was completely omitted from the film version of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"?

Answer: Broderick Bode

Broderick Bode was working in the Department of Mysteries as an Unspeakable when Lucius Malfoy placed him under the Imperius curse to force him to steal a prophecy that Voldemort wanted. Bode was severely injured during his attempt and while he was recovering at St Mungo's, received a plant as an anonymous Christmas gift. The plant turned out to be Devil's Snare and Bode was strangled to death.

The St. Mungo's story line was not included in the film. Sadly, it looks as if we Muggles will have to wait a little longer to see the inside of a magical hospital.
6. In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", the secret student organization called Dumbledore's Army abruptly ended when one of the members told Professor Umbridge of its existence. In the BOOK version, which Ravenclaw female received a rather nasty surprise for her whistleblowing efforts?

Answer: Marietta Edgecombe

Marietta was a friend of Cho Chang's who, out of fear for her mother's job at the Ministry, turned traitor. Thanks to one of Hermione's hexes, she immediately developed a horrible skin rash with the word "SNEAK" splashed across her face for all to see.

Marietta didn't appear in the film adaptation. Instead, Cho was portrayed as the snitch, effectively ending her brief romance with Harry once and for all.
7. In both the print and film versions of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", Professor Umbridge recruited students for her Inquisitorial Squad. In the book, the Weasley twins took one of the squad members out of commission by forcing him into a Vanishing Cabinet. Who was this member of Slytherin house?

Answer: Graham Montague

Determined to catch and punish all rule breakers, Umbridge formed the infamous squad and gave its members almost full authority over their classmates. When Montague tried to take points from Fred and George, they retaliated by pushing him head first into a Vanishing Cabinet. After he returned to Hogwarts and healed from his injuries, Montague related to Draco Malfoy that during his confinement he could sometimes hear the voices of people in Borgin and Burkes. His story gave Draco the idea to use the cabinets to smuggle Death Eaters into Hogwarts the following year.

Theodore Nott is a Slytherin student who attended Hogwarts during Harry's time but both Regulus Black and Tom Riddle (aka Lord Voldemort) finished school long before the series began.
8. This former Quidditch star played a rather significant role in the novel "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" but made no appearance in the film. As Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports, which man was announcer at the World Cup, served as one of the judges of the Tri Wizard Tournament, and showed a keen interest in helping Harry with his tasks?

Answer: Ludo Bagman

Prior to taking the job at the Ministry of Magic, Ludo Bagman played the position of Beater for the Wimbourne Wasps. When the Tri Wizard Tournament began, Bagman took an unusual interest in Harry, even offering his help in preparing for the tasks. Harry later learned that his would-be benefactor was a compulsive gambler who had bet on a Potter victory in hopes of making enough money to satisfy his debts with a group of goblins.
9. During his sixth year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter spent a good deal of time learning about Tom Riddle's childhood and his transformation into Lord Voldemort. In one session, a trip into Dumbledore's Pensieve revealed a rather sad story about Riddle's mother. What was her name?

Answer: Merope Gaunt

The Gaunts were a pure blood family who could trace their lineage directly back to Salazar Slytherin. By the time Voldemort's mother and uncle Morfin arrived, the family fortune was long gone and the two siblings were forced to live with their father Marvolo in a run down shack near the village of Little Hangleton.

When a handsome Muggle named Tom Riddle caught Merope's eye, she used her magical powers to bewitch him into marriage. Riddle quickly left the dull-witted and unattractive Merope as soon as the charms wore off. Alone and pregnant, she died shortly after giving birth to her only child.

Although the sixth film includes a flashback scene with a younger Dumbledore visiting Riddle at Wool's Orphanage to inform him of his acceptance into Hogwarts, none of the Gaunt family members were included in the movie series.
10. At the end of the book "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", Ron Weasley received a surprise gift. What was it and who sent it?

Answer: An owl from Sirius Black

Pigwidgeon didn't make it into the movies but is mentioned several times in the books as a tiny, excitable bundle of feathers that is constantly making noise. Sirius sent the owl as a replacement for Ron's rat Scabbers, who ran away after it was revealed that he was actually a killer named Peter Pettigrew.

Both cats and owls are popular pets among wizards.
