Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Magician's Nephew", an ordinary animal from Earth is transformed into a magic creature like the one named "Pegasus" in Greek mythology. What is it?

Answer: A flying horse

A London cab-driver's horse called Strawberry is transformed by Aslan the Lion into a winged horse. His name is changed to "Fledge". He helps the children Polly and Diggory carry out a quest for magical fruit.
2. Some Narnians are part human and part horse. What are they called?

Answer: Centaurs

A minotaur is part bull; a manticore is part lion, and a cockatrice is a mixture of a lion and a rooster. Centaurs also appear in Greek mythology. In the Narnia books, we learn that it can be very expensive to invite a centaur to dinner, because you have to prepare a big meal for the human half as well as the horse half.
3. In "Prince Caspian", which scary beast (the same type as Remus Lupin and Fenrir Greyback in the "Harry Potter" books) says "I'm hunger. I'm thirst. Where I bite, I hold till I die..."?

Answer: A werewolf

The werewolf attacks Prince Caspian, but with the help of his friends, he is able to fight it off. The werewolf also says, "I can fast a hundred years and not die. I can lie a hundred nights on the ice and not freeze. I can drink a river of blood and not burst."
4. What kind of a creature is Puddleglum, from "The Silver Chair"?

Answer: A Marsh-wiggle

Marsh-wiggles look like humans, but they have webbed hands and feet like a frog's, and their hair is weedy and flat, "like tiny reeds". Marsh-wiggles do not appear in other well-known books or myths. If Puddleglum is a good example of them, they are gloomy most of the time, but can be very brave and loyal.
5. In "The Silver Chair", an Earthman named Golg describes magic creatures who live in fiery rivers deep underground in the land of Bism. What are they called?

Answer: Salamanders

Golg says the salamanders in Narnia are "too white-hot to look at. But they are most like small dragons." He also says they can speak, and are very clever. There are ordinary amphibians called salamanders on Earth, but there are also legends about salamanders that live in fire.
6. In "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe", the very first Narnian creature that Lucy meets is half human and half goat. What is he?

Answer: A faun

The faun is named Tumnus, and when Lucy first meets him, he is wearing a scarf and carrying an umbrella and some packages. Later in the book, he is kidnapped and turned to stone, but he is restored to his normal self and becomes a good friend to Lucy by the end of the story.
7. In Narnia, the trees are half alive, and are inhabited by lovely tree spirits. What are they called?

Answer: Hamadryads

The hamadryads are mentioned in several of the books. They look human, but they also look a little like the trees they belong to. For example, a willow spirit would have long trailing hair like a willow tree. If you cut down their tree, they will die and vanish (this happens in "The Last Battle"). Naiads are water spirits, while the Maenads are the rather wild girls who follow the god Bacchus in "Prince Caspian".
8. In "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", one of the human children is transformed into a mythical creature. Who, and what kind?

Answer: Eustace becomes a dragon

Eustace spends too much time on a dragon's horde of gold, and turns into a dragon himself. Although this is a very unhappy situation for him, he learns a lot from it, and when he does become a boy again, he's a much nicer person.
9. In "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe", certain sea creatures sing at the coronation of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. What are they called?

Answer: Merpeople

There are apparently several kinds of water people in Narnia. The Merpeople can breathe air and look like human beings. In "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", the sailors encounter "Sea People", who are half human and half fish. Basilisks and sirens are mythological creatures that are not mentioned in the Narnia books. Sea lions are ordinary animals found on Earth.
10. In "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", the ship is nearly wrecked when it is attacked by a giant creature. What is it called?

Answer: A sea serpent

The sailors mention that squids, krakens and sea serpents are the most dangerous types of monsters that could attack a ship. The sea serpent tries to wrap its coils around the Dawn Treader to crush her, but the crew manages to push it off the end of the ship, and the ship is only slightly damaged.
