Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Home Run
Answer: Baseball
Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport in which the offensive (batting) team try to score as many runs as possible, whilst the defensive (fielding) team try to prevent them from doing so. A "home run" is scored when the batter hits the ball in the air so that it remains within the foul lines and clears the outfield (including the outfield fence, if it is present).
2. Double Top
Answer: Darts
A traditional pub game popular in Britain, darts involves the player throwing small missiles, known as darts, or arrows, towards a circular board (the dartboard) that is hung on a wall with the aim of scoring as many points as possible. "Double top" refers to a player hitting the double twenty section of the dartboard (which is located right at the top of the board). Doing so earns the player forty points.
3. Try
Answer: Rugby
There are two main types (or "codes") of rugby. Rugby union has fifteen players on each side, whereas rugby league has thirteen players on each side. In both codes, the most lucrative form of scoring is the "try", which is when a player crosses the opponent's goal-line whilst carrying the ball, and touches the ball on the ground.
In rugby union a try is worth five points, and in rugby league, a try is worth four points.
4. Three Pointer
Answer: Basketball
Basketball is a sport played on a court between two opposing teams of five players each that was invented by Canadian James Naismith in 1891. A "three pointer" is scored when a player throws the ball from outside of the three-point arc and the ball passes through the opponent's basket or hoop.
5. Deuce
Answer: Tennis
First played in the mid-1800s, tennis is a racket sport that can be played on a variety of surfaces (such as grass, clay, or concrete) by either two (singles) or four (doubles) players. The scoring system used in tennis is somewhat unusual, in that scores of 15, 30, and 40 are used for each successive point earned. If the scores reach 40-40, that is commonly referred to as "deuce", which then usually requires a player to score two successive points in order to win that particular game.
In some tournaments, only one further point is required to win the game after a game score of deuce has been reached.
6. Boundary
Answer: Cricket
In a similar vein to baseball, cricket is a bat-and-ball sport in which the offensive (batting) team try to score as many runs as possible, whilst the defensive (fielding) team try to prevent them from doing so. Although not an official method of scoring, the phrase "boundary" is often used to describe when a batsman has hit the ball so that it crosses the boundary line that goes around the edge of the field. If the ball touches the ground before going over the boundary line, the batsman scores four runs. If the ball does not touch the ground before going over the boundary line, the batsman scores six runs.
7. Pin / Pinfall
Answer: Wrestling
The grappling combat sport of wrestling has many different forms, such as freestyle, Greco-Roman, and Sumo. In many of these styles, including the very popular sports entertainment style popularised by the likes of WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) and TNA (Total Nonstop Action), one method of winning the bout is via pin or pinfall.
This is when a wrestler holds (or pins) his opponent's shoulders to the mat for the time period specified in that form of wrestling.
8. Hole in One
Answer: Golf
Although some historians claim that the origins of the game of golf date back to Roman times, it is generally accepted that the modern game of golf was first played in Scotland in the fifteenth century. The aim of the game is for a player to complete his round (which generally consists of eighteen holes) in as few shots as possible. One of the most prestigious feats in the game of golf is scoring a "hole in one".
This is when a player completes a particular hole in just one shot, that is, he hits his ball from the tee and it ends up in the hole without him having to take another shot.
9. 147 Break
Answer: Snooker
Snooker is a cue sport, generally played between two players, in which the aim is for a player to score more points than his opponent in each particular individual game (known as a frame). A "147 break" is a relatively rare occurrence, and is achieved when a player pots all fifteen red balls, followed by a black ball each time, and then all of the remaining coloured balls in order - yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, black - thereby scoring the "maximum" possible break of 147. Technically it is possible for a player to score a "maximum" break of 155 (this relies on the opposing player playing a foul shot and leaving a free ball), however the 147 break is widely accepted as being the "maximum" in the course of normal play.
10. Touchdown
Answer: American Football
Also known as "gridiron", the sport of American football evolved from association football (soccer) and rugby, and was first played in the mid-1800s. The most lucrative form of scoring is the "touchdown", which is when a player has control of a live ball (that is, one that has not been called "dead" via the officials blowing their whistles to indicate that the particular passage of play is over) whilst in his opponents' end zone.
