Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A centaur is a mythical creature with the the upper body of a human and the lower body of which animal?

Answer: Horse

Centaurs are found mainly in Greek mythology, and are usually depicted as male, although there are records of female centaurs. The best known centaur from myth is Chiron, who is described as having been the teacher of heroes such as Achilles. In the Harry Potter books, a centaur named Firenze becomes one of the teachers at Hogwarts.
2. A mythical creature with the body of a woman and the tail of a fish is known by which name?

Answer: Mermaid

All the creatures listed lived in the sea, but the mermaid is the half human half fish one - the male version is called a merman. The myth of the mermaid can be found in several mythologies, including Babylonian, Japanese and Polynesian as well as the more common Greek.
3. The mythical god Anubis is usually shown with the head of a jackal and the body of a human. In which country's mythology did Anubis appear?

Answer: Egypt

Anubis was the Egyptian god of the dead and is normally pictured as having the body of a man and the head of a jackal or other dog like creature. His role was to protect those who had recently died, and he was also the patron of the people who prepared the body by embalming or mummification.
4. The Hindu god Ganesha is usually depicted with the head of which creature?

Answer: Elephant

In addition to having the head of an elephant, Ganesha has four arms, three of which hold different items, including a dish of a sweet named laddoo. The fourth hand has an upraised palm, in readiness to bless his followers. Ganesha is the god of success and removes obstacles from the path of believers. He is depicted as travelling on the back of a mouse.
5. The minotaur, a mixture of a man and a bull, is particularly associated with which Greek island?

Answer: Crete

The minotaur lived in a maze, or labyrinth, under the palace of King Minos in Knossos, Crete. He was the offspring of Queen Pasiphae, wife of Minos, and a bull, and was fed by the sacrifice of young men and women. The minotaur was killed by the Greek hero Theseus.
6. The gorgons were frightening women from Greek myth. Their 'hair' was made from which living creatures?

Answer: Snakes

The best known of the gorgons (there were three in total) is Medusa, and she is the only one who is mortal, and capable of being killed. Looking at a gorgon turned the person viewing her to stone. Medusa was killed by Perseus, who cut off her head. He was able to use the reflection from his shield to see where she was so avoided the usual fate by not looking directly at her. All the gorgons had venomous snakes instead of hair.
7. Fu Xi is a mythical creature with a lower body made from a snake and the upper half of a human from which Asian country?

Answer: China

This is probably the least known of the creatures in the quiz, but I hope I helped you by only including one Asian country in the options. Fu Xi is known by various names, including Tai Hao and Bao Xi, and is the first emperor of China in myth. Fu Xi is credited with having tamed animals, taught the Chinese people how to cook and how to catch fish among other useful talents.
8. A harpy is a mythical creature made up of a female head and face with the body of which of these?

Answer: Bird

Harpies appear in both Greek and Roman mythology, and are unpleasant creatures who steal food from humans. Their main appearance in myth is in the story of Jason and the Argonauts. Jason rescues Phineas the Blind Man from the harpies, who had prevented Phineas from eating. In return, Phineas gave Jason information which enabled him to continue his search for the Golden Fleece.
9. The sphinx is a mixture of a human head with the body of which big cat?

Answer: Lion

The sphinx in Greek mythology had the head of a woman, the wings of a bird and the body of a lion. It was an evil creature who asked travellers to solve a riddle and ate those who were unable to give the correct answer. The best known sphinx in history is in Egypt, though, and is called the Great Sphinx of Giza.

This sphinx has a male head on a lion's body and is located near the River Nile.
10. In Roman mythology, the creature with the top half of a human and the lower half of a goat was known by which name?

Answer: Faun

The Greek equivalent is known as a satyr. They live in wild places like forests and were believed to sometimes help or, at other times, hinder travellers. As well as having the body of a goat, the faun had horns on its human head. The best known faun like creature is Pan, from Greek mythology, whose name is remembered in the name of the musical pipes called Pan pipes.
