Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the bony case protecting a mammal's brain called?

Answer: Skull

A skull is a solid bone that is almost impossible to break. All mammals have a skull and most are at least 1cm thick in places and if fractured can sometimes completely heal. The skull can be divided into two sections, the cranium and the mandible.
A shell is a hard outer layer that is mainly on the outside of many sea life as well as some other animals.
2. What usually is the first food of a baby mammal?

Answer: Milk

All mammals when first born drink their mother's milk. This milk is high in essential vitamins and minerals and without them the infant could die. The baby suckling helps reinforce the mother-baby relationship.
3. How many limbs does a mammal usually have?

Answer: 4

These limbs are arms and/or legs which all mammals have. Limbs are one of the characteristics that makes a mammal a mammal. No mammals can regenerate their limbs if they are hurt.
4. What colour is a mammal's blood?

Answer: Red

A mammal's blood colour is red: the brighter red it is, the more oxygen there is in the blood. Mammals also tend to have Vitamin K in their blood in order to help it clot if the animal is wounded.
5. About how many species of mammals exist in the world today?

Answer: 5000

Today around 5000 species of mammals inhabit the Earth; compared to other species of animals this is rather small. The amount of mammal species left in the wild has been declining ever since the 1800s when things such as industries started to take away areas of mammals' habitats.
6. How many eggs does a platypus usually lay at any one time?

Answer: 2

The platypus is one of only two mammals that produces young by laying eggs. It is a special class of mammal called a Monotreme. The other mammal that does this is the echidna. These two eggs that are usually laid often end up being eaten by large lizards that are looking for a good meal.
7. What is the world's largest marsupial?

Answer: Red Kangaroo

The Red Kangaroo is the largest marsupial (a marsupial is a mammal with a pouch) by quite a large amount. The male Red Kangaroo is also far bigger than the female Red Kangaroo - in most cases at least 30% bigger.
8. How many known species of wombat live in Australia?

Answer: 3

Australia is the only country to have Wombats living in the wild. Wombats are burrowing animals. The most common wombat lives up to its name: the "Common Wombat".
9. On average how many hours a day do koalas sleep?

Answer: 19 hours

In fact, the koala sleeps almost the most out of any mammal. The lion actually sleeps for 20 hours although it makes up for it in the few hours that it is awake by running sometimes up to 10 km just to get a meal.
10. Why do kangaroos lick their forearms in hot weather?

Answer: Evaporating saliva cools blood vessels.

Evaporating saliva cools the blood vessels that are near the surface of their skin and also helps to keep them fairly cool. Kangaroos must keep themselves cool since they often live in places of Australia that can reach 40 degrees Centigrade or more during the day.
