Billy used the six power coins to build a machine that would counteract the effects of the Orb of Doom. After using it on himself it was stolen and the coins destroyed before he could use it on the other Rangers. This made Billy appear as a teenager for most of the miniseries, while the other Rangers remained children.

Earlier in the third season of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" the Rangers had found the crystal, broken it into five pieces and scattered it through time and space in order to hide it from evil.

In the fourth episode of the series, Billy built the machine. The machine worked properly at first, but Lord Zedd dumped "space waste" in the water. While Billy's machine took the Earth properties out of the water, the new toxins were too much and the machine actually amplified the toxins in the water.
