Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The School at the Chalet", Simone ran away. Joey found her hiding in the pine-woods. What reason did Simone give for her disappearance?

Answer: She had cut off her hair, and was afraid of being laughed at and told off.

Simone was very homesick, and wanted Joey to be her only friend. Joey insisted she would have as many friends as she liked, but didn't mind being pally with Simone. When Joey told everybody about two new girls who would be coming to the Chalet next term from her old home in England, Simone thought Joey would love her more if she had short hair, like Joey's, instead of a long pigtail.

Juliet persuaded Grizel, Anita, Sophie and Suzanne to join her one Saturday morning so that Mr. Eades could film them for the movie about "Life in the Austrian Tirol", despite Miss Bettany having forbidden the filming of her pupils. Herr Mensch was taking Joey and Simone out with Bernhilda and Frieda; they saw what was happening, and he interfered and sent Anita, Sophie and Suzanne home, while he took Grizel on with the other girls.

There was a severe thunderstorm when everybody was having a picnic on the Mondscheinspitze to celebrate Miss Bettany's birthday. Simone and Amy Stevens were both frightened, but the whole party took shelter in the herdsmen's hut overnight before returning to Briesau the following morning after the storm had died down.

Grizel ran away to climb the Tiernjoch near the end of term. She didn't get lost, but did get trapped in the mist which came down. Joey found her, but Grizel was too scared to move because they were on a precipice. They were rescued by Herr Marani and Herr Mensch, but Grizel was ill with bronchitis, and it was feared that Joey might have brain fever. Happily, both girls made a full recovery.
2. In "Jo of the Chalet School", Jo wasn't to be found one wet Saturday morning. While the seniors hunted through le Petit Chalet and upstairs in the dormitories the younger girls searched the ground floor, looking in all the likely and unlikely places they could think of. Which is NOT one of the places they thought of looking?

Answer: Inside the grandfather clock.

They also looked in the stationery cupboard, behind the book-lockers, inside the desks and under all the coats in the cloakroom, but failed to find Joey anywhere. Everyone had assumed that Joey was just trying to find a quiet place to write the editorial for the first issue of 'The Chaletian'.

In fact Eigen, who helped his sister, Marie, in the kitchen had told Joey about a litter of St. Bernard puppies which was to be drowned; the pair had gone to the rescue, but were only in time to save one of them. Joey was allowed to keep him as her birthday present, and Rufus stayed with her for most of the next twenty years.
3. In "The Princess of the Chalet School", who was kidnapped?

Answer: Elisaveta

Elisaveta, Princess of Belsornia, was kidnapped by her father's cousin, Price Cosimo.

Elisaveta's father, the Crown Prince, was seriously ill after falling from his horse. Since Belsornia was subject to Salic law, Cosimo was next in line to the throne. He was not popular with the people, and it was feared that there would be a public demonstration in favour of Elisaveta if her father should die. Miss Bettany had asked for a bodyguard for the princess, and Signor Ternikai, Cosimo's henchman, had persuaded her and Elisaveta that he was that bodyguard.

When Elisaveta was woken in the night, and told that she needed to be taken into hiding, Joey was suspicious, so she and Rufus (her St. Bernard dog) tracked the party. Elisaveta managed to elude her captors and the two girls made their way back through the Tiern Pass where they were met by Miss Bettany who was accompanied by her fiancé, Dr. James Russell, and Captain Trevillion, who had been sent by the Crown Prince.

Prince Cosimo was found dead in the mountains, apparently having fallen and broken his neck. The Salic law was abolished in Belsornia, making Princess Elisaveta second in line to the throne. Finally, a special ceremony was held in Firarto, the capital of Belsornia, to thank Joey for saving their princess.
4. In "Eustacia Goes to the Chalet School", Eustacia was not happy at the Chalet School and decided to run away over the Tiern Pass into Germany. What happened to thwart her plans?

Answer: She was trapped by floods.

Eustacia's parents had subjected their only child to their eccentric ideas on the upbringing of children. After their death, she had gone to live with her aunt and uncle and their five boys, but had found it very difficult to fit in with the family. It was decided that she might benefit from being educated at the Chalet School, but she had found it just as difficult to fit in there, and had been very unhappy.

Knowing that she would be recognized as a Chalet School pupil if she tried to go down to Spärtz for a train to Innsbruck, and also that there would be no diligence from Scholastika on a Sunday, she had decided to follow the mountain stream to take her up and over the Tiern Pass and into Germany. Unfortunately she took a wrong turning; the snow thawing and the very heavy rain made the stream flood, and she had to climb up and seek refuge in a little cleft in the rock.

Dr. Gottfried Mensch from the Sanatorium found her after the water subsided; she was alive, but had seriously injured her back. She spent the next year recuperating on the Sonnalpe, where she also learnt to get along with other people, and eventually returned to the Chalet School as a much nicer and happier girl than when she ran away.
5. In "The Chalet School in Exile", Gertrude Becker arrived part of the way through the Autumn Term in 1939. What happened when she tried to go home to find out what had happened to her mother?

Answer: She was torpedoed by a German U-boat.

During the last term that the Chalet School spent in the Austrian Tirol, the girls had signed a league vowing to try and keep peace between their nations and not to believe lies about evil doings. The Nazis gathered that there was some mysterious piece of paper, but failed to find it, despite sending two spies, an eight year old boy and his mother, to follow the girls when they tried to hide it in a cave in the mountains.

Gertrud Beck was sent to the Chalet School, when it re-opened in Guernsey, as Gertrude Becker; she was supposed to find out what the girls had been trying to hide. One or two of the girls were suspicious, and suspected that she might be German, so she was unable to find out much.

One day she received a letter berating the lack of information from her, and asking where her mother had gone. Gertrud decided to go home to Heidelberg in Germany to try and find her mother. However, the Breton fishing boat which was taking her to Denmark was torpedoed by a U-boat. Gertrud, along with some of the crew, were rescued by a British destroyer; she explained to the captain that she was a German and had been a Nazi, but not any longer. They took her to Scapa Flow, where she would be interviewed by the British authorities before returning to the school.
6. In "Lavender Laughs in the Chalet School", the whole school missed morning lessons for a long walk after a spell of bad weather. Lavender vanished while they were out. What happened to her?

Answer: She fell into a snowdrift.

The third formers were enjoying a snowball fight when a ball, thrown by Lavender, landed in Joy Bird's hair. She pushed Lavender over, with the result that Lavender fell down the bank and was buried in a snow drift. Lavender was dug out by Miss Edwards and Miss Stevens, taken back to the school, and put to bed in the San by Matey.

All the other options are also mishaps which befell Chalet girls at different times. Peggy Bettany also fell into a snowdrift in "The Chalet School in the Oberland". Emerence Hope fell over the edge of a cliff in "A Chalet Girl from Kenya". Signa Björnessen fell into the lily ponds at Bosherston in "Carola Storms the Chalet School", and Margot Maynard fell into Lake Lucerne in "The Chalet School Does It Again". Jo Bettany fell into a pit in "The Chalet Girls in Camp", and Cornelia Flower also fell into a hole during the following term in "Exploits of the Chalet Girls".
7. In "Gay from China at the Chalet School", Gay Lambert ran away home to see her brother. What did she bring with her when she came back to the school?

Answer: German measles

Gay's sister-in-law had asked that Gay be allowed to go home for a few days so that she could see her brother before he went to see their parents in China. Miss Bubb, who was a temporary Headmistress following an accident before the start of term, refused permission because she felt that Gay had been rude and impertinent. Gay borrowed money from her friends Gillian and Jacynth, and left the school in the middle of the night to walk to Medbury to catch the early morning milk train to Worcester; then she would get a train to Oxford, where she expected to be able to get a connection to Newcastle.

She met up with the father and grandmother of a family she had met on the way to school at the beginning of term. They told her off for being so silly, but sympathised with her reasons, and saw her safely home; they also offered to escort her back to school a few days later. Somewhere on the journey they must have encountered somebody with German measles, because, not only did Gay catch the illness, and spread it around the school on her return, the grandmother also succumbed.
8. In "The Chalet School and the Island", Annis Lovell planned to use one of the school's boats to row to the mainland before heading for which country?

Answer: America

Already motherless, Annis' father had recently been lost at sea. Although Annis had been boarding with friends of her mother and going to the High School with their girls, her cousin and guardian, Miss Bain, disliked the family and sent Annis to the Chalet School. Miss Bain explained to Annis that there was very little money, but there would be enough for her to stay at school till she was eighteen, and then to pay for teacher training; Miss Bain would have to do without some of her luxuries to do this, and Annis would have to be independent after her training was finished. Annis didn't want to be beholden to her cousin, nor did she want to become a teacher. She told her cousin that she would like to be a nurse, so she could leave school at the end of term and start supporting herself straight away; she knew she could go back to her mother's friends for holidays. Miss Bain told Annis that she would have to wait two more years to train as a nurse, and she would have to stay at school and spend her holidays with Miss Bain in her latest boarding house till then.

Just before the end of term, Annis packed a small case with necessities and crept out of school in the middle of the night. She took one of the rowing boats, and set off for the mainland. She intended to go to Liverpool and try and earn a passage to America by working as a nursemaid; she hoped to stay until she was old enough to be independent of her guardian. Unfortunately, Annis hadn't allowed for the strong currents. Although she was a good oarswoman, she was swept onto the rocks of a neighbouring island. She was able to get ashore with no more damage than a sprained ankle, and climbed the cliff to escape the incoming tide. The following morning she was found by Kester Bellever, a local bird expert. He returned her to school, where news had come that her father had been found on a very small island, and would soon be returning home.
9. In "Jane and the Chalet School", Jack Lambert got lost during a game of hide-and-seek at half-term. What had happened to her?

Answer: She was stuck in a tree.

Because there was an outbreak of smallpox in the area, everybody had to stay at school for the half-term break instead of going to visit other parts of Switzerland. Miss Wilmot and Miss Ferrars took a party of girls to the pine-woods to spend the day picnicking. During the last round of the game before lunch, Jack climbed a tree to hide. When Jane found her, she told Jack to come down, but Jack had got stuck. A twig had caught the neck of her frock and she couldn't move and was being half strangled; also the bough she was sitting on was starting to give way. Jane climbed to the rescue; she was able to rip through Jack's frock, freeing her just in time to move to a safer part of the tree.

Miss Wilmot saw what had happened, and called Len Maynard and Betty Landon to climb up and help the younger girls down the tree. After treating their numerous scratches with iodine and Bandaid, Miss Ferrars made the girls eat some lunch. Then Len Maynard offered to go to her home, which was next door to the school, which was closed up for the day. She would fetch some outgrown clothes so that both Jane and Jack would have something to wear, because Jane's frock was filthy and torn, and Jack's was ripped to shreds.

Jane felt much more like herself after a nap. Jack, however, found it difficult to rest because she had resented Jane's arrival at school. Now she would have to be grateful to Jane, and stop hating her.
10. In "Redheads at the Chalet School", Val Gardiner ran off from school to go and talk to her brother, Peter, at the Sanatorium. What happened to her as she made her way back again?

Answer: She was kidnapped and drugged.

Because of her red hair, Val had been mistaken for Inspector Letton's stepdaughter, Flavia Ansell. Despite having been told not to talk to strangers, Val, who was feeling very tired after her long walk, accepted the offer of a lift back to school, and also drank the offered glass of milk, because she was hungry and thirsty. Once asleep, she was injected with further drugs to stop her waking, and then driven to the gang's hideout in Germany.

There they realised that they had the wrong girl, so they needed to get rid of her as quickly as possible, and then make their escape. Val, still asleep from the drugs, was put on a train to Interlaken, with a ticket in her coat pocket, and a note pinned to the rug wrapped around her saying 'Take this girl to the Chalet School on the Görmetz Platz'. She was found by Edgar Barr of the Special Branch, who was conveniently on his way to visit the Sanatorium, so he returned Val to school six days after she left.
