Purple sprouting broccoli, to give it its full name, is a variety of broccoli with florets - the tree-like bits on top - which come in purple. It's got a sweeter taste than green broccoli, and is a bit leaner. (Incidentally, did you know that there are purple carrots as well? They originally come from Afghanistan.)

Spyro first appeared in 'Spyro the Dragon' on the Playstation in 1998. He can breathe fire and fly, and is often accompanied by Sparx, a dragonfly. In 'Spyro the Dragon', he has to defeat Gnasty Gnorc, who has trapped other dragons in crystal and stolen their gems. Other games in the 'Spyro' series include 'Enter the Dragonfly' and 'Year of the Dragon'.

A purple people eater is the only imaginary animal - it's a monster from a song called 'Purple People Eater' by Sheb Wooley. According to the song, it has one horn, one eye and can fly. As for the others, a purple emperor is a butterfly, the purple frog is a rare frog species that lives in India, and the purple starling is a bird that lives in Africa and has shiny purple and green feathers.

Purple is what is known as a secondary colour - in other words, it's a colour that comes from mixing two primary colours, in this case blue and red. If you mix blue and yellow, you get green. If you mix red and yellow, you get orange. If you mix red and white, the result is pink.

The purple cat is, of course, the Cheshire Cat. He appears and disappears at random points throughout the film, and because he disappears piece by piece, sometimes you can only see his eyes and/or teeth. Alice first encounters him in the Tulgey Wood singing 'Jabberwocky'.

The idea of the Cheshire Cat came from the phrase 'to grin like a Cheshire cat', possibly because the English county of Cheshire is famous for its dairy farms (and cats, according to urban legend, love milk and cream!)

Barney, the purple T-Rex, is the star of 'Barney & Friends'. Unlike most T-Rexes, Barney prefers fruits, vegetables and peanut butter sandwiches to people. He also enjoys parades. He is often accompanied by his dinosaur friends, Baby Bop the triceratops and her big brother BJ.

RL Stine has written several books for both children and teenagers, and has been described as the 'Stephen King of children's literature'. His full name is Robert Lawrence Stine. His most famous series is the 'Goosebumps' series, a series of horror stories and short story collections aimed at children. 'Beware of the Purple Peanut Butter' is a 'choose your own adventure' style book in the 'Give Yourself Goosebumps' series where you, the reader, get to pick how you want the story to proceed.

Fiorentina are an Italian football team based in the city of Florence in Tuscany. Unlike the more traditional football colours of red, white or blue, these footballers play in a purple kit. They are nicknamed 'La Viola' (the Purple One) or 'I Gigliati' (the Lilies, as their symbol is a lily). They won their first Coppa Italia trophy in 1940, beating Genova 1893.

In 'Cluedo' (or 'Clue' in the US), the players have to guess who the murderer is out of the six characters, what weapon they used and what room they did it in. Professor Plum is usually depicted as a middle-aged man with glasses and a bow tie. He is represented by a purple piece and is the last piece to be played.

In a more modern version, 'Cluedo: Discover the Secrets', he became Victor Plum, a rich video game designer.
