Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which spell disarms your opponent by removing their wand from them?

Answer: Expelliarmus

Expelliarmus is the disarming spell. Harry Potter often uses it against the Death Eaters and it becomes his signature move, which means he is easily recognisable. However, he returns Voldemort's killing spell with it in the final battle at Hogwarts in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and defeats him. Stupefy knocks out your opponent, Accio brings an object to you and Lumos lights up the area around you using your wand tip.
2. What spell is used to unlock doors but is useless if the door has been protected against it?

Answer: Alohomora

Hermione uses it in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosophers Stone" a lot to get into the forbidden door on the third corridor which was hiding Fluffy. The word itself comes from an African language and means "friendly to thieves". Avis creates birds, Crucio tortures someone and Diffindo severs or rips things.
3. What is the name of the spell that swells things up or enlarges them?

Answer: Engorgio

Engorgio is used in "Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire" when Professor Moody enlarges a spider to test the unforgivable curses on it. Reducio is the opposite to Engorgio, Swellus I made up and Expulso makes things explode.
4. Which spell makes fire appear from the end of the caster's wand?

Answer: Incendio

Incendio is used many times; for example, it is used when Hagrid's hut is set on fire in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". Flagrate creates a fire-like mark, Langlock glues the victim's tongue to the roof of their mouth and Morsmordre creates the Dark Mark.
5. What is the name of the spell that stops people near you hearing your conversation?

Answer: Muffliato

Muffliato is a spell created by the Half-Blood Prince which Harry Potter likes to use, but of which Hermione disapproves at first. Silencio silences people or animals, Sonorus magnifies your voice and Tergeo clears a surface of grime.
6. What spell causes conjured objects to attack the person you point your wand towards?

Answer: Oppugno

Hermione uses Oppugno on Ron when she is angry with him. Avis creates birds and works well with Oppugno because the birds then attack the person of your choice. This is how Hermione attacked Ron. Attakus is made up and Nox puts out your wand and is the opposite of Lumos.
7. What is the name of the spell that provides protection for a whole area or an abode?

Answer: Protego Totalum

When Harry, Hermione and Ron are trying to find Horcruxes in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", they use Protego Totalum on their tent to keep them hidden from Snatchers. Protego just provides weak protection to one or two people, Protego Horribilis provides strong protection to a few people and Legilimens allows the user to infiltrate your mind.
8. What is the name of the spell that stops someone choking?

Answer: Anapneo

Anapneo is not used until "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" when Professor Slughorn stops a student from choking on a piece of food. Waddiwasi flings a small object through the air, Obscuro creates a blindfold on someone and Portus turns an object into a portkey.
9. Which spell makes victims dance so that they cannot control their feet?

Answer: Tarantallegra

Tarantallegra is used most memorably in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" when it causes Neville Longbottom to smash the prophecy. Relashio forces someone or something to release what they are holding, Riktumsempra causes your target to experience being tickled and Densaugeo causes your teeth to grow at a very fast pace.
10. Finally, what spell stops any effects of weather-related jinxes?

Answer: Meteolojinx Recanto

Meteolojinx Recanto is suggested to Ron when he goes undercover at the Ministry of Magic in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". He is pretending to be Reg Cattermole, using Polyjuice Potion. Riddikulus gets rid of a Boggart, Aguamenti creates a jet of water and Glisseo turns stairs into a slide.
