Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Over breakfast one morning, Janet and Peter's father shows them an article in the newspaper. A young girl has run away from home after being accused of stealing from her teacher at school. He suggests the Secret Seven investigate! What is the name of the missing girl?

Answer: Elizabeth Mary Wilhemina Sonning

Elizabeth Mary Wilhemina Sonning was accused of stealing money from her teacher's desk. She ran away from her aunt's house with nothing but the clothes she was wearing. Her parents live abroad and her brother is away in France. They think she might have been heading for her grandma's house in Belling.
2. A Secret Seven meeting is called, but Janet can't remember the secret password. Her mother is making lamb chops for dinner which helps her remember what it is. What is the password in this book?

Answer: Mint Sauce

Peter refuses to tell his sister Janet the password but tells her to think of lamb. It's not until Janet goes into the kitchen to ask mummy for ginger biscuits for the Secret Seven meeting that she sees the lamb chops her mother is cooking. Her mother walks in with fresh mint to make...mint sauce! She immediately remembers the password!
3. The description of the missing girl is written in the newspaper. Peter reads it out to the Secret Seven so they will know who they are looking for. Which of these is NOT a description of Elizabeth Sonning?

Answer: She is pretty and petite with long blonde hair

Elizabeth has a lot of soft, curly dark hair and brown eyes. She has a scar down one arm which would be quite a good, distinctive thing to look out for but the children feel sure that she would hide that first of all.
4. The runaway girl's grandma lives in a nearby village. She is collecting old clothes for a jumble sale, and Peter and Jack take some to her house to talk to her. The old lady is ill in bed but the children talk to her friend, Miss Wardle. She says she thinks Elizabeth has been coming in the house at night. Why does she think that?

Answer: Some food and a rug have gone missing

Miss Wardle says she has known Elizabeth all her life and neither she nor her grandmother believe she has stolen the money. Miss Wardle has noticed some tarts and a pie have gone missing from the kitchen and a rug from the back room. She hasn't told the old lady yet as she doesn't want to worry her.
5. Pam and Barbara are out searching the woods for Elizabeth. All their ideas turn out to be dead ends. They see a girl in school uniform walking through the woods so they hide in a bush and watch her. What happens next?

Answer: The girl falls into the bush on top of them

The girl approaches the bush then just as she is about to walk past, she falls into the bush and starts laughing - it is Jack's annoying sister, Susie! She saw them and thought they were going to jump out at her, but now she knows they are up to something and wants to find out more!
6. One of the places the children visit is Warner's Stables. They speak to two stable boys, Tom and Harry, and ask if they've seen anyone fitting Elizabeth's description. What does Tom tell them?

Answer: He saw the girl they describe in a tea shop in Gorton the other day. She said she was going to France to see her brother

Tom and Harry talk to the children as they enquire about any girls who have been working at the stables. Harry says there was a girl who came asking for a job the other day but she doesn't fit Elizabeth's description. Tom says he has seen a girl who does match the description when he was in a tea shop in Gorton the other day.

It was hot and she had her sleeves rolled up, showing her scar. When he spoke to her, she mentioned she was going to get a train to London and then fly to France to be with her brother.
7. The Secret Seven see a girl in school uniform with a suitcase climbing over a stile. They all try and catch up with her on their bikes. She disappears somewhere but they find a suitcase with EMWS printed on it. What is inside the suitcase?

Answer: A box containing even more boxes...and a note

After finding a hanky dropped by the girl with 'E' embroidered on it, they follow the girl into an abandoned house where she has discarded the suitcase and run away. Inside the case they find a box labelled "The Money". Inside it is another box, and another...and then they find a note. The note reads, "Lots and lots of love from Susie!" Oh, that pesky girl!
8. The boys plan to keep watch over the garden of Elizabeth's grandma that night. Over at the stable, they talk to Tom who offers to help out, and Peter reluctantly agrees. They split up and hide in the hedges and bushes, and Tom hides up a tree. What happens in the garden that night?

Answer: They see a torch-light in the house, but nobody comes in or out

The boys take their places around the garden, and use owl-hoots to communicate. They realise that two policemen are also hiding somewhere in the garden. As they watch, they see torch-light inside the house going into various rooms, but they've not seen anyone go in or out.

The policemen wake up Miss Wardle to tell her what they have seen. More food is gone but nobody was found inside the house. I wonder how she has got into the house?
9. Peter and Jack visit Elizabeth's grandma and Miss Wardle again. Elizabeth's brother, Charles, has come to help search for her. Peter and Jack tell Charles that Tom saw Elizabeth a few days ago and take him to the stable to talk to Tom. What happens next?

Answer: Tom runs away before Charles can talk to him

Charles comes over from France to help find his sister. Peter and Jack tell him that Tom said he saw her in Gorton and she had said she was going to France to see her brother. Charles explains that he has been travelling round France and Elizabeth would not know how to find him there.

He knows she would not have gone to France. Then Elizabeth's headmistress comes round and says they have found out Elizabeth didn't steal the money - another girl has owned up. The boys take Charles to the stable to speak to Tom, but when Peter tells him he has a visitor - Charles - Tom throws down his tool and runs away. How very odd!
10. Elizabeth has been proved innocent and there is no need for her to hide any more. After meeting Charles, Peter suddenly realises what has been happening. He finds Elizabeth and gets her to come home. Where does he find Elizabeth?

Answer: She has been living in the stable wearing a disguise

Peter thinks Charles looks familiar somehow and then suddenly works out who he looks like - Tom the stable boy! Elizabeth has been pretending to be a boy and cut all her hair off. He chases her on his bike as she rides across the field on a pony and tells her it is safe to come home now - the real thief has been found.

She had been sleeping in the stable, getting food from her grandma's. She got into the house by going up the tree and through the bathroom window! Everyone is glad to see her, although she is sad she will have to go back to school.
