Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of the book, the Secret Seven let Jack's annoying sister, Susie, join the gang for the morning because she has a new toy they want to play with in the field near Jack's house. What toy does Susie have?

Answer: A toy plane from America

Jack and Susie's cousin sent them both toys from America. Jack asked for a cowboy outfit, and Susie asked for a plane and was sent the most wonderful plane in the world! Jack is eager to play with it and so are the rest of the Secret Seven, so they let Susie join them and go play in the field.
2. The toy goes over a high garden wall. Jack climbs up to ask if he can get it back but the mean gardener says no. Peter and Jack go into the garden when the gardener is on his break. The toy is up on a balcony so Peter climbs a tree to get up there. What does Peter see through the window on the balcony?

Answer: A gas fire is burning

The plane doesn't turn round when it should and flies straight over the wall. The mean gardener tells them to clear off and says if he finds their plane he will throw it away. When the gardener goes on his break, Peter and Jack climb up and over the wall again and look for it. Peter sees it up on a balcony and climbs up to get it.

While there, something catches his eye through the window where the curtains are just open a little - it is a gas fire burning in the fireplace. Very odd for an empty house!
3. The owners of the house have gone abroad and have left the keys with the bank. Jack's housekeeper helped to clean the house before they left and says everything was turned off so nobody could be living there. Jack and Peter go back to the house at night. What happens next?

Answer: Two men arrive and catch Jack & Peter in the garden

Jack and Peter head to the house to see if the gas fire is still burning. They plan to climb over the wall with a ladder but Susie knows they're up to something and won't let them have it. They go to the front door and two men catch them - the gardener they have already met, and Mr Frampton from the bank.

The children have to explain what they are doing there or the men threaten to tell the police and their parents. When Peter explains about seeing the gas fire upstairs, Mr Frampton insists on going inside to check.
4. Inside the house, Peter notices some other signs that someone has been living in the balcony room. Which of these signs does he NOT notice?

Answer: A table set with a fresh bread and hot food

The two men take the boys up to the balcony room, where the gas fire is not turned on. After assuming Peter was lying to him, Mr Frampton tells him to clear off and stop telling tales. Peter tries to point out the other things in the room that suggest someone has indeed been there but they won't let him speak. The boys leave the house and cycle off but Peter is VERY VERY CROSS!
5. Another meeting is held to discuss the latest findings. Peter thinks they need to investigate the gardener further! He changes their secret password to the surname of the gardener. What is his surname?

Answer: Grim

The children comment that his name seems to be very appropriate - he is a very grim man!
6. Peter divides up jobs. Pam is sent to interview her granny because the gardener used to work for her. What does Pam's granny say?

Answer: The gardener and his wife looked after her house for a week and were good, honest people

Pam's granny says she always felt Mr Grim was a good man, and he and his wife looked after her house for a week once. His wife looked after her house well and even made a batch of jam with the fruit from her garden. His wife had a bad cough and was very happy to stay there.
7. Janet and Barbara are sent to see where the gardener lives. What sort of house do they describe?

Answer: A small cottage by the canal which is damp and mouldy

Janet and Barbara find out that Mr & Mrs Grim live in a small cottage by the canal which is a very bad condition. The water has come right into the garden and it is very very damp with fungus growing up one wall. Mrs Grim is in poor health, so Mr Grim has to do all the shopping and cooking as well. Their neighbour hasn't seen Mrs Grim for a while ...
8. It seems like the gardener is an honest man, so who has been living in the empty house? The boys go back to the house at night and wait to see who shows up. They hear a radio playing quietly inside. Colin & George give the danger signal - someone is coming! Jack & Peter hide high up in the tree, but someone else climbs the tree to the balcony. He gives a secret knock and is let in at the window. Who is it?

Answer: The gardener

Mr Grim climbs up the tree that the boys are sitting in. They clearly see his face as the window to the balcony room is opened and he is let inside.
9. The boys head home to Peter & Janet's to report what they have seen to the grown ups. Peter's dad knows just what to do and makes a phone call to a friend. They take Peter and Jack to the house and quietly go up to the balcony room. What do they see when they get inside?

Answer: The gardener and his poor sick wife

When he finds out what has been happening, Peter's dad calls his friend - Mr Frampton from the bank. They go over to the house with Peter and Jack and let themselves in. Slowly they creep up to the balcony room and knock on the door. Mr Grim tries to stop them from coming in but eventually he has to let them.

They expect to see him there with an accomplice, planning to rob the house, but instead all they find is Mrs Grim, his wife, who is quite ill after living in the damp cottage. Mrs Grim had to go to hospital but didn't want to leave Mr Grim.
10. The mystery is solved but the Secret Seven don't feel happy about what they found. They want to make things better. What do they do?

Answer: Have a whip round to raise some money

The children feel sad that Mr Grim and his wife live in such poor conditions that they had to hide out in the empty house. Nobody is going to press charges but they don't want Mr & Mrs Grim to have to go back to their own home. They have a whip round to raise some money for them - even Susie gives money from her piggy bank! Then Peter's dad tells them he has decided to let them live in an empty cottage on his farm that has just become available. Hurrah!
