Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As Harry, Ron, and Hermione set out to discover the remaining Horcruxes, they travel to Grimmauld Place to hide from the Death Eaters. Standing in the entrance, what spell does Hermione use to make sure no one else is hiding inside?

Answer: Homenum Revelio

This spell to reveal a human presence is used a second time in the book during the scene where Harry, Ron, and Hermione are visiting Xenophilius Lovegood. Mr. Lovegood tries to convince the two Death Eaters that Harry Potter is in the home, and Selwyn uses the spell to determine their presence.
2. Inside the Ministry of Magic, Ron has assumed the identity of Reg Cattermole. "Reg" is sent to Yaxley's office to make it stop raining. Which spell does Mr. Weasley suggest to "Reg" that he use?

Answer: Meteolojinx Recanto

Mr. Weasley tells "Reg" that a lot of offices have been raining lately, and that the "Meteolojinx Recanto" spell worked for Bletchley. Ron nearly says, "Thanks, Dad," but catches himself in time to say, "Thanks, Arthur."
3. Harry and Hermione have taken Slytherin's locket from the neck of Dolores Umbridge. For what reason does Hermione use a Geminio spell soon after?

Answer: to duplicate the locket so that Umbridge is unaware it's been stolen

Similar to "Geminio", the Gemino Curse was used on the treasure in the Lestrange's vault, causing the objects there to multiply when touched. The beauty of this spell is that "Gemini" is the Latin word for twins; similarly the zodiac sign Gemini is represented by twins.
4. Camping out all over Britain, Hermione employs a variety of protective spells around their tent at each location. Which of the following is *NOT* one of Hermione's spells?

Answer: Protego Horribilis

Professor Flitwick casts the "Protego Horribilis" spell, as the students and staff prepare for the arrival of Voldemort at Hogwarts. I would be interested to know what the difference is between Flitwick's "Protego Horribilis", and Hermione's "Protego Totalum"!
5. "Descendo" is another spell introduced in Book 7. Ron uses it to bring down the attic ladder in the Burrow, but in which situation is it used again?

Answer: Crabbe uses it to topple a mountain of junk in the Room of Requirement

Crabbe tries to topple the junk onto Ron with "Descendo", but Harry stabilizes the pile with "Finite".
6. Hermione explains to Ron that food is one of the five Principal Exceptions to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration. But which of the five is it?

Answer: the first

Hermione argues that you can't produce food out of thin air - you can Summon, transform, or increase the quantity if you have some, but you can't make it out of nothing!
7. Ron explains to Harry and Hermione that Voldemort and the Death Eaters have put a jinx on the name "Voldemort", so that anyone who says it can be tracked immediately. What does Ron call this jinx?

Answer: the Taboo

The Trace is the charm that detects magical activity around wizards between 11 and 17. Eventually Harry forgets about the Taboo and accidentally says "Voldemort", allowing them to be located by a gang of Snatchers.
8. Twice Hermione rescues the trio from a sticky situation with a blasting spell. When cornered by Death Eaters in the Lovegood's home, "Deprimo" blasts a hole in the floor. Which spell does she use to help the dragon blast through the tunnels of Gringotts?

Answer: Defodio

Doing a little research to try to figure out the difference between these two spells, I found that the Latin word "defodere" means to "plough in", and the Latin "deprimere" means to "press down". Perhaps because Hermione wished to create a hole in the floor, (which would be in the 'down' direction), the "Deprimo" spell works best in that situation.
9. As the staff at Hogwarts prepare their defense against Voldemort, Professor McGonagall brings an army of statues and suits of armor to life. What spell does she employ to do so?

Answer: Piertotum Locomotor

"Wingardium Leviosa" is used to make objects fly through the air, and the Fidelius Charm is the secret-keeping charm to hide the location of a home. Status Mobilis is simply a spell I invented.
10. During the final battle at Hogwarts, Hermione creates a chute out of a flight of stairs, and causes the tapestry at the bottom of the chute to turn to stone. Which pair of spells cause these actions?

Answer: Glisseo and Duro

As the trio discuss who should sneak to the Shrieking Shack to try to kill Nagini, they're surprised by a couple of Death Eaters at the top of the stairs. With the aid of Hermione's spell, they slide quickly away from the Death Eaters. Upon reaching the end of the chute, the "Duro" spell turns the tapestry at the end to stone, effectively ending the Death Eaters' pursuit.
