Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Please note: The word clue when capitalized refers to one of "The 39 Clues." Otherwise it is just a minor clue to help find the real Clue. Now, on to the quiz! Fourteen-year-old Amy Cahill and her younger brother Dan kick off "In Too Deep" at the airport in Sydney, Australia. They traveled here on a hunch after finding something in the Amber Room in Russia at the end of the previous book, "The Black Circle." What was it that they found that belonged to their parents?

Answer: Australian passports

They were passports that belonged to their parents, but under an assumed name. They have nothing else to go on to find another clue, so Amy and Dan decide to try to trace their parents' movements in hopes that they will find something.
2. Shortly after arriving in Sydney, while traveling on a bus from the airport, Amy has something stolen from her. What is it?

Answer: Her grandmother's necklace

A 'sweet' elderly woman sits behind Amy and Dan on the bus, and continually 'accidentally' hits the back of Amy's head with a map. Amy realizes it quickly, but not before the old woman gets off the bus. Shortly afterwards, Amy encounters Isabel Kabra - the mother of Ian and Natalie, in the Justice and Police Museum. Who do you suppose stole the necklace?
3. At the Justice and Police Museum, Amy and Dan learn about a criminal from the 1890s named Bob Troppo. It turns out that in 1896, Troppo tried to assassinate someone who was in Sydney on a lecture tour - someone that Dan and Amy know to have been a Cahill. Who was it?

Answer: Mark Twain

According to the museum clerk, "Troppo was seen talking to him in an alley outside the hall where he spoke. Apparently, they had words, and Troppo smashed him on the shoulder with a cane! The cane had a knife concealed in it. That was enough to convict him."
4. Nellie and the Cahill kids find a relative in Sydney who is NOT part of any Cahill Branch. Rather, he is related through Amy and Dan's father, Arthur Trent. What exactly is 'Uncle Shep's' relation to Arthur?

Answer: Second cousin

'Uncle Shep' explains it, "I practically grew up with your dad. Our mothers were cousins and best friends. They grew up together, and Artie and I did, too. Until we were twelve."
5. 'Uncle' Shep gets a call on his phone and rushes everyone out of the house. Why?

Answer: To go surfing

"You've got to drop everything when the call comes."

While at the beach, Eisenhower Holt and family try to muscle Dan and Amy for information, but with the help of 'Uncle' Shep's surfing buddies, they manage to escape.
6. Amy gets a call on Nellie's cell phone from Ian Kabra. At first she is not inclined to listen to anything he might have to say, but then Ian claims to have knowledge about how Amy's parents died. He tells Amy that he has proof that the fire was an accident.

Answer: False

Ian tells Amy "My mother told me everything. They were murdered." Ian goes on to invite Amy to talk about it with them (the Kabras) - a temporary truce - and that "We give you our word that nothing will happen."

Irina Spasky finds Amy and delays her from her appointed meeting - is she to be trusted? Or is she leading Amy to a trap?
7. Narrowly escaping a trap by the Kabras with the help of Hamilton Holt, Amy makes her way back to Dan and the others. Shortly after returning, Amy finds a scrap of paper hidden in the lining of her mother's old leather jacket. It turns out to be a letter written by... what famous pilot?

Answer: Amelia Earhart

Dated 28 June, 1937, Amelia recounts her efforts - both successes and failures - in trying to track down the 39 Clues in the region. Amy and Dan realize that the places mentioned in the letter match the destinations visited by their parents years earlier, according to 'Uncle' Shep's charter book.
8. Following the path that their parents took previously, Amy, Dan, Nellie and 'Uncle' Shep fly to the Outback town of Coober Pedy. On the way, Amy and Dan discover something about Nellie that surprises them. What is it?

Answer: She can fly a plane.

Amazingly (to Dan and Amy), Nellie offers to take over flying the plane for a bit, and she goes on to say that she's been flying since she was a teenager, has 500 hours of flying, including instrument flying, and night flying.
9. In Coober Pedy, the Clue hunters track down where Bob Troppo had lived for a time. They find a clue that gives them Bob Troppo's real name - Robert Cahill Henderson - and the fact that he was an Ekaterina and a renowned chemist. To retrace his trail, they must go to the island of Java, and seek out the volcano that supposedly took his life in an eruption in 1883. What volcano?

Answer: Krakatoa

Even though Robert Cahill Henderson supposedly died in the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, Amy and Dan know that he survived as the deranged criminal Bob Troppo. They assume that the eruption caused his mental state. Krakatoa is part of the 'Ring of Fire' that is a chain of volcanoes in the region. 'Ring of Fire' is also what Bob Troppo had scraped into the wall of his cave in Coober Pedy over and over again.
10. 'Uncle Shep' keeps the authorities from taking Dan and Amy into custody (wanted by Social Services in the USA), and Nellie flies them to Jakarta, Indonesia. Amy and Dan find themselves on an island owned by Alistair Oh. Isabel Kabra sets a fire that will kill them all, but someone comes and saves them, at the cost of their own life. Who?

Answer: Irina Spasky

Irina, disillusioned with the actions of Isabel - even more ruthless than Irina had been as a KGB agent, especially as regards children - redeems herself through her self-sacrificing actions. After all is said and done, Dan and Amy learn that the Clue that Robert Cahill Henderson had was 'water.'
