Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Please note: The word clue when capitalized refers to one of "The 39 Clues." Otherwise it is just a minor clue to help find the real Clue. Now, on to the quiz! Dan and Amy arrive at Beijing International Airport to begin the novel, and after clearing customs, Dan lets Saladin out of his cat carrier. As might be expected, Saladin bursts out of his cage and beelines it to someone sitting nearby on a bench. Who?

Answer: Alistair Oh

Alistair tries to make a deal with the Cahill kids to pool their resources. Amy and Dan will have none of it, though, having been burned by Alistair in the past. Even so, Alistair warns them that the Kabras have already been in China for several days, and that rumor among the Ekats is that the Holts have made a major breakthrough.
2. Dan and Amy head to the Forbidden Palace while Nellie goes to find them an affordable hotel. They learn that one of the Chinese imperial dynasties were of the Janus branch of the Cahill family, "renowned for their obsessive commitment to the arts." Which dynasty?

Answer: Qing

The Qing dynasty was the last imperial dynasty, lasting from 1644 to 1911. According to the "39 Clues" reality, the Qing dynasty, including the last emperor, Puyi, was part of the Janus branch.
3. Dan finds a clue in the Forbidden City, but afterwards Amy and Dan get into a fight about their parents. Angry and frustrated, Dan runs away before Nellie rejoins them. Dan doesn't get far before he is snatched off the street by one of the rival teams. Who?

Answer: The Kabras

After plumbing Dan for information, the Kabras render him unconscious with chloroform. When Dan wakes up he finds himself on a conveyor belt in a factory, in extreme danger of injury or death. He manages to escape his predicament, but gets captured by the factory workers.
4. Dan gets taken in by Jonah Wizard, who promises to use every means at his disposal to find Amy and Nellie and reunite them. In the meantime, Dan stays with Jonah and hopes that Amy and Nellie will come looking for him. Dan doesn't realize it, but they do just that, while Jonah is performing a concert at this stadium, built for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Answer: The Bird's Nest (National Stadium)

Amy and Nellie join a throng of fans that manage to break through the security, and nearly trample Dan in the process. They don't actually see him, and when they confront Jonah and ask him about Dan, Jonah feigns ignorance as to Dan's whereabouts. Shortly afterwards, Amy and Nellie see a news broadcast that shows Dan with Jonah, and they realize that Jonah lied.
5. Amy and Nellie follow Jonah Wizard's published itinerary and head for the Great Wall of China, hoping to rescue Dan from his clutches. Where do Jonah and Dan actually end up going?

Answer: The Shaolin Temple

While at the Shaolin Temple, Dan gets a lesson in Kung Fu and then follows that up by finding a clue in a cave way up the mountain near the Bodhidharma statue. A wrapped bundle of broken test tubes that were a testament to the fire that destroyed the ancestral Cahill family home.

There was also a small locket with the picture of a woman who looked amazingly like his mother, but obviously couldn't be.
6. While at the Great Wall, Saladin caught the scent of another tourist's sardine sandwich. In his mad rush to get at it, he overshot his target and fell over the edge. What was the fine that Amy and Nellie had to pay to retrieve Saladin?

Answer: 400 yuan

Four hundred yuan worked out to about 59 US dollars. With Dan and Jonah somewhere else entirely, Amy and Nellie decide that the best thing to do is to continue the clue hunt. They go back to the Wall the next day, and actually find a visual clue that points them to "where the Earth meets the sky," clarifying the cryptic statement learned earlier from the last Emperor, Puyi.
7. Following a clue that Jonah received from the Janus branch, Dan and Jonah search for one specific terracotta statue among many. It turns out to be a trap and Dan finds himself being viciously attacked. Who saves his life?

Answer: Jonah Wizard

Jonah has the opportunity to leave unseen, but his conscience gets the better of him, and he returns to save Dan from his attacker. It turns out to have dire consequences, as no less than six terracotta statues are destroyed. They both get captured by the authorities -- who could imagine the great rap star Jonah Wizard being involved in such an event?
8. Jonah's mother Cora Wizard meets with Dan and Jonah after they are released from jail. Cora tries to convince Dan that they have discovered Amy and Dan's true branch of the Cahill family -- the Janus branch! Dan doesn't buy it. He responds by saying, "Janus? I'm no Janus! I know exactly what branch I am! I'm a Cahill!"

Answer: False

Dan actually exclaims, "I'm a Madrigal!" before he runs out the door, leaving the Wizards with their mouths hanging open in shock.
9. Dan figures out where to go next when he sees a newscast showing a group of climbers tackling Mount Everest, and recognizes the Holts. Remembering a story about Everest told to him by his grandmother Grace, Dan travels by train to the village of Tingri. Amazingly, Dan finds Amy and Nellie, who had come to the same village for the same reason... the only way to get up Mount Everest without weeks of preparation and hard climbing:

Answer: A helicopter

The Ecureuil/A-Star 350 is an ultralight helicopter that the French government landed at the peak of Everest in 2005. At first, the pilot of the helicopter will have nothing to do with Dan and Amy and their crazy request to fly to the summit. After a mysterious phone call by Nellie, though, he accedes to their wishes.
10. In addition to the Holts and Dan and Amy, Ian Kabra had also found a way to get to the summit of Everest quickly - a pressurized suit. All three teams meet at the peak and vie for possession of the Clue hidden there by Cahill ancestor George Mallory. Who comes up with the Clue?

Answer: No one

Amy had the Clue in hand, but dropped it in an instant when Ian Kabra almost fell. She sacrificed the Clue to save Ian. What Amy realized, though, was that each branch's serum (this one was the Janus serum), when combined, would make a master serum. THAT was what the 39 Clues was all about!
