Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Please note: The word clue when capitalized refers to one of "The 39 Clues." Otherwise it is just a minor clue to help find the real Clue. Now, on to the quiz! Picking up right where book 6, "In Too Deep," left off, 14-year-old Amy and 11-year-old Dan are still in shock over Irina Spasky's death. Nellie Gomez (and Saladin) arrive in a speeding boat, with the police hot on their heels. Who told the police about the fire and Irina's death?

Answer: Bae Oh

At first Alistair assumes that it must be Isabel who informed the police - after all, it is her 'modus operandi' to commit an act and put the blame on others. But after a short chase, the police intercept them and take Alistair into custody - then bring him to his uncle, Bae Oh! Dan, Amy, Nellie and Saladin are left alone by the police to go on their own way.
2. From both Irina and Alistair, the Cahill kids have a clue from a song: "We are marching to Peoria." As soon as they can, Dan and Amy book themselves a flight to Illinois.

Answer: True

The flight booking to Illinois is made as a decoy. Amy does a little research before actually booking any flights, and learns that the original version of the song is "Marching to Pretoria," and not Peoria. The decoy flight booking works well enough to draw the Kabra kids to Illinois to wait for Dan and Amy, though. Deception made, the siblings soon find themselves in South Africa.
3. As they are leaving Tambo International Airport, Dan is handed a postcard with some cryptic writing on the back and a picture of the great warrior Shaka Zulu on the front. What Cahill branch crest does he see inscribed on the center of Shaka's shield?

Answer: Tomas

The confusing part in this for Dan and Amy is that Shaka Zulu cannot be a Cahill descendant, since his people did not have contact with ANY Europeans until the 1800s.
4. A Hummer chases Dan and Amy from the airport all the way to Pretoria. Who turns out to be inside it?

Answer: The Holts

Dan, Amy and Nellie manage to get a group of soccer players to delay the Holts while they make their escape. Only, guess who turns up again in their path? That's right - Alistair Oh, whom they thought had been put in jail by the Jakartan police. They aren't ready to buy Alistair's story, though, having been burned by him in the past.

Instead of partnering up with Alistair, they leave him behind to be collected by the Holts.
5. Amy gets a text message on her phone from one of the rival teams threatening harm against Alistair Oh if they do not come to a rendezvous. It could mean one less competitor in the Clue Hunt if they just ignore the threat. Do they go?

Answer: Yes

Amy and Dan have not gotten to the point that they devalue human life as some other Cahill rivals have demonstrated. It turns out that the threat is all Eisenhower Holt's idea, and the rest of the family show themselves to be very uncomfortable with it, to the point that Hamilton helps them (and Alistair) escape the trap.
6. Using the information gleaned from the postcard clue, Nellie and the Cahill kids make their way to Johannesburg and Constitution Hill. While searching in the museum's reading room, they find the connection that they are looking for. It is a document written by what Lucian and former British Prime Minister?

Answer: Sir Winston Churchill

Their research showed that the documents in question were private correspondence regarding the infamous Number Four prison for 'blacks.' Their grandmother Grace had secured the collection and donated them to the Constitution Hill Library.
7. Mrs. Thembuka, the librarian at the Constitution Hill Library, grants Amy and Dan access to the secured collection, but when she notices one of the Australian passports that had belonged to their parents, she becomes very upset. According to Mrs. Thembuka, the Nudelmans were infamous... what?

Answer: murderers and thieves.

Mrs. Thembuka explains that "The Nudelmans were Aussies, I believe, but they went all over the world on their spree. India, Indonesia, South Africa..." She goes on to describe what they did, "...suffice to say, brutal crimes with no motives. Ransacking buildings and leaving no one alive."

Could their parents really have done those things?
8. Dan, Amy and Nellie follow the clue found at the library to Witbank's Mines. While there, Dan risks his life to find another clue which, when he deciphers it, gives them the location of the next real Clue. AMOST TIREDGNEIN DRIENNOUGHT WHIT ASHAK

Answer: Tomas ingredient in the ground with Shaka

Learning this information brings them full circle to the postcard that they received upon arriving in South Africa. Remember? On it was a picture of Shaka Zulu, with a shield hiding the Tomas branch symbol. Now all Amy and Dan need to do is find where Shaka Zulu is buried!
9. While visiting the Shaka Museum in Durban, Dan and Amy hear again of a Tomas ancestor, Henry Francis Fynn, who knew Shaka. Following that lead brings them right to the doorstep of a Tomas stronghold. They manage to infiltrate the building complex and find a shrine set up to Shaka Zulu. Unearthing a box, they make good their escape and open the box to find the Clue. What is it?

Answer: Aloe

Aloe was the 'isipho' - the gift - that Shaka had given Flynn. Aloe was not the only thing in the box, however. There was also a diamond bracelet in the box, but the confusion as to which item was the Clue is revealed a little later on when Dan finds a hidden message in Churchill's letter, "Tomas clue is umhlaba." Umhlaba is, of course, aloe.
10. Clue in hand, Dan, Amy, and Nellie head off to the airport to fly to their next destination. They go through security, and then are promptly gathered up by a Lucian agent who brings them face-to-face with Isabel, Ian, and Natalie Kabra! What offer does Isabel make to Dan and Amy?

Answer: To adopt them.

When Amy and Dan refuse that ludicrous offer, Isabel tries to kill them. Fortune smiles on the two kids, though, as they are rescued by Professor Bardsley - the former friend of Grace Cahill who had been covertly helping the kids while they were in South Africa. As they fly off towards Karachi, Dan and Amy finally learn what branch of the family they are part of... the Madrigals!
