Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Madrigals are descended from Gideon and Olivia Cahill's youngest child Madeleine. Which of these formidable women was NOT a Madrigal?

Answer: Anastasia Romanov

The overriding goal of the Madrigals has been to reunite the different branches (Ekaterina, Janus, Lucian and Tomas) of the Cahill family. To that end, they have spent centuries in the shadows, monitoring the other branches, and ensuring that no one branch could complete the hunt for the 39 Clues and achieve dominance over the others.

Part of what the Madrigals have done over the years is to try to limit or counteract the damage done by the other branches by helping the world at large. Thus, their work has been humanitarian, and designed to promote peace and harmony all over the globe.
2. Every Cahill branch now knows the location of one of the Madrigal strongholds: the Cahill ancestral home in the Irish Sea. Where is the other Madrigal stronghold, an island known for its large stone-head statues?

Answer: Easter Island

With its remoteness from pretty much anywhere else in the world, it made an excellent stronghold for Madrigal agents. It was unlikely to be accidentally discovered by any of the other Cahill branches.

In the middle of the 20th century, the Madrigals constructed a fake moie (stone-head statue) on this Polynesian island to hide the entrance to their underground stronghold. With state-of-the-art technology, the Madrigals are able to keep close tabs on Cahill activity all around the globe from this location.
3. In an update on Madrigal member activities, information is revealed about Dan and Amy's activities at school after the end of the Clue Hunt. For what was Dan NOT sent to the office on his first day back at school?

Answer: Assaulting his English teacher, Miss Bradford.

When Mr. Garcia asked why he had missed the first three weeks of school, Dan replied, "It's top secret. If I told you, someone in my family might try to kill you. But I'd stop them. I learned wushu from Shaolin monks!" Then he tried to demonstrate.

When given the task of writing an essay on Benjamin Franklin in history class, Dan asked his teacher if he could write about Franklin's interest in farts. When Mrs. Travis told him that he was "disrespecting on of our most revered founders," Dan grew angry that she was ignoring his greatest accomplishment.

In music class, when Mr. Haverford explained that Mozart had died bankrupt, Dan was quick to point out that it was because he'd spent all his money "importing crazy materials from around the world, like tungsten." He then tried to prove it by pulling one of the samurai swords he'd found on the hunt, waving it around.
4. The eldest child of Gideon and Olivia was Luke Cahill, the originator of the Lucian branch. After being falsely accused by his siblings of killing their father, Luke became obsessed with revenge. His ruthless tactics and lust for power became the norm for the Lucian branch. Which of these historical figures was NOT a Lucian?

Answer: Mahatma Ghandi

Lucians are described as "natural-born leaders with unstoppable ambition [who] know how to inspire and how to manipulate." While many Lucians aspire to public leadership, many also like to pull the strings from the shadows.

The list of famous (or infamous) Lucians, in addition to the three already listed, include Benjamin Franklin, Ching Shih, Gustave Eiffel, Sidney George Reilly, Anastasia Romanov, William Stoughton, Theodore Roosevelt, Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill.
5. Lucians have been using poison for centuries, and they favor the use of a number of different poison-delivery mechanisms, suitable for various occasions. Of the many options disclosed in "The Black Book of Buried Secrets," which of these is actually on the list?

Answer: Poison Teddy bears

Poison is the perfect tool for silent assassinations, and over the centuries, the Lucians have developed their own special poisons that are almost impossible to detect.

The list of poison-delivery mechanisms include the following: rings, fingernails, darts, cuff links, Teddy bears, and umbrellas. The most commonly used, though, are poison rings and fingernails. They make for an up-close-and-personal kind of attack. That's what makes Lucians so dangerous: "they can smile at you one moment and then jab you with a poison ring before you even have a chance to smile back."
6. A transcript of court proceedings updates the fate of Isabel Kabra after the events at the Madrigal stronghold in the Irish Sea. Having been put on trial for first-degree murder, what was the outcome of the jury's deliberations?

Answer: Guilty

As Isabel Kabra was being led from the courthouse, she was accosted by reporters. After a barrage of questions, she calmly replied, "I regret failing my children. I allowed them to grow up as weak-minded fools without the strength to make hard decisions. They'll never amount to anything. They'll never be in the papers."

Despite having even this moment in the spotlight, however bad the light might be, soon enough Isabel Kabra will be forgotten, and only prisoner number 44850 will remain.
7. Katherine Cahill was the second child of Gideon and Olivia, and the branch of the family descended from her are called Ekaterinas, or Ekats for short. Known for their ingenuity and inventiveness, Ekats have had some of the greatest minds in the past 500 years within their ranks. Which of these scientists was NOT an Ekat?

Answer: Dr. Jack Kevorkian

Katherine and her younger brother Thomas were together at the beginning, after the fire that killed their father scattered them. Unfortunately, a falling-out between the two of them resulted in Katherine leaving for Egypt and stealing one of Thomas' Clues in the process. Since then the two clans have been bitter rivals.

In addition to the names listed above, famous Ekaterinas of the past have included Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Sir John Flamsteed, Howard Carter, T.E. Lawrence, Orville and Wilbur Wright, and Abraham Lincoln.
8. Transporting Clues can be hazardous. The Ekats lost a Clue with the Titanic, as well as another when a plane crashed into a Scottish lake. They elected to keep the Clue hidden there and simply protect it. What lake did this happen in?

Answer: Loch Ness

According to the file on the Ekats in "The Black Book of Buried Secrets," the Clue at the bottom of Loch Ness is protected by Nessie, which is in reality a monster-shaped submarine operated by an Ekat agent named Charlie.
9. Ekaterina member Alistair Oh's movements after the momentous events at the end of "Into the Gauntlet" were monitored and reported on in "The Buried Book of Black Secrets." Alistair returned to Cairo, confronted his uncle, Bae Oh, and drew him out to be arrested for his crimes. Which of these were not one of the charges laid against Bae Oh?

Answer: The theft of Egyptian historical artifacts

Alistair confronted Bae in the lobby of Cairo's Hotel Excelsior; the location of an Ekaterina stronghold. Bae had his stooges manhandle Alistair as he demanded the truth of what happened in Ireland at the Madrigal stronghold. As Alistair drew Bae to the hotel entrance, Bae assaulted Alistair with his cane, in full view of the waiting United Nations security officials. Assault and battery were also included on the list of charges.
10. Members of the Tomas branch of the Cahills are described as "adrenaline junkies who have shaped history through their bravery and unquenchable thirst for adventure. One of their most famous historical members was the man who first walked on the moon. Who was it?

Answer: Neil Armstrong

Thomas Cahill was the third child of Gideon and Olivia. After the falling-out with Katherine, Thomas left with his wife to Japan, where he founded the first Tomas stronghold.

Famous Tomas members in history have included Sir John Franklin, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, Annie Oakley, Gertrude Ederle, George Washington, Lewis and Clark, Sacagawea, David Livingstone, Simón Bolívar, Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, George Mallory, Marie Marvingt, Jessie Owens, and King Louis XIV.
11. The files in "The Black Book of Buried Secrets" reveal the process by which Tomas branch leaders are selected. Candidates must compete in a tournament. First is an iron man triathlon, then a Sahara Desert or Amazon rainforest survival test. The first five to make it that far then write an exam on military history and strategy. In the unlikely event of a tie, how is the tie-breaker determined?

Answer: A chess match

While a chess match is the tie-breaking contest, an added incentive for the participants: the game must be played on a bed of live coals. It's no wonder that Tomas enemies consider them to have "all brawn and no brains."

The current branch leader is Ivan Kleister, a Norwegian extreme skier.
12. The Tomas representatives in the Clue Hunt were the Holts. The family took on the challenge to try to redeem their family name within the Tomas branch. The reason that the Holt name was disgraced is because of an accusation against Buchanan Holt (Eisenhower's father) that he had leaked sensitive Tomas branch secrets to the Ekaterinas. Did he really do it?

Answer: No

Buchanan had been chosen by Tomas branch leadership to transport a sensitive file from the Mount Fuji stronghold to South Africa. A few days after he arrived in South Africa, copies of the documents appeared in the Ekaterina stronghold in Cairo. What nobody realized, as is revealed in "The Black Book of Buried Secrets," is that it was the Madrigals who did the deed, in an effort to maintain the balance of power between the Cahill branches.
13. The Janus branch of the Cahills descended from the fourth child in the family: Jane. Branch members are devoted to the arts in all the forms that they can be expressed. It is no wonder, then, that the main Janus stronghold in the United States can be found underground beneath a famous California landmark. Where is the stronghold?

Answer: Hollywood

With Hollywood being the center of the film industry, and all that is attached to that, it seemed the perfect place for the Janus branch's main stronghold. The Janus have been a major presence there since the birth of the film industry in the 1910s.

Famous Janus members in history include Thomas Jefferson, Alessandro Cagliostro, Harry Houdini, Gervais Raoul Lufbery, Henry Morton Stanley, Lord Byron George, John Keats, Mary Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Jane Austen, Vincent van Gogh, Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, Ludwig II of Bavaria, Ambrose Pierce, Sir Walter Raleigh, Josephine Baker, Charlie Chaplin, Hedy Lamarr, James Dean, Mark Twain, Emperor Puyi of China, and of course Nannerl and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
14. One of the skills that Janus members have cultivated that has been very beneficial for their Clue Hunt efforts is the art of impersonation. The ability to act like someone else often is the key in making a disguise effective. Cora Wizard found a Janus actress to impersonate someone from the Lucian clan who managed to infiltrate the Lucian Paris stronghold and steal an important document. Whom did she impersonate?

Answer: Isabel Kabra

The success of that Janus operation is what made Isabel Kabra put Cora Wizard on her 'to kill' list.

Other favorite methods that the Janus like to use in their pursuit of the 39 Clues are music codes, camouflage, hiding messages in art, library codes, surveillance vans, and Clue-inspired films.
15. "The Black Book of Buried Secrets" contains a file on a Jonah Wizard update, detailing an interview that he took for MTV's "Cribs." After the interview Jonah entered his secret communications room to find four missed messages from William McIntyre, and Dan and Amy Cahill. The last message terrified Jonah. What did Amy say?

Answer: "They found us. The Vespers are coming."

Who are the Vespers? Their history extends back to the time of Gideon and Olivia Cahill, and "The Black Book of Buried Secrets" was compiled to allow the different Cahill clans the opportunity to pool their knowledge in preparation of the upcoming confrontation.

The Vespers are "the Cahills' darkest, most terrible nightmare - a half-whispered memory from our pas, an adversary we wanted to believe was just a legend."
