Frank Zhang is an interesting and complex character, whom we first meet in the second volume, "The Son of Neptune". He himself is a son of Mars, but his family is descended from a Greek hero, a grandson of Poseidon, who had the ability to change into animal form, This family migrated to Rome, where one member served as a Roman soldier in the east, was captured, and taken to China.

His descendants eventually ended up in Canada, where his mother met Mars, the god of war, and gave birth to Frank.

His ability to change shape comes in very handy during the heroes' adventures.

Piper McLean is the daughter of Venus (the Roman equivalent of Aphrodite) and has the power of charm-speech, that is to influence others just by the sound of her voice. She also wields Katoptris, a dagger that once belonged to Helen of Troy. Annabeth Chase is the daughter of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare.
