Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first book, 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', the Sorting Hat sorted Harry into Gryffindor House. What colours are associated with Gryffindor?

Answer: scarlet and gold

The Gryffindor crest shows a golden lion set against a scarlet (red) field (background). The colours yellow and black are associated with Hufflepuff, and blue and bronze are the colours for Ravenclaw. Green and silver are of course the colours for Slytherin House. Harry didn't want to be sorted into Slytherin, and his thoughts were picked up by the Sorting Hat, which placed him in Gryffindor instead. Professor McGonagall is Head of Gryffindor House.
2. What colour eyes does Hermione Granger have?

Answer: brown

Hermione is described as having thick, bushy brown hair and brown eyes. She first meets Harry and Ron on the Hogwarts Express in their first year, but they find her too bossy and do not make friends with her until later in the book when they rescue her from a troll.

Hermione is Muggle-born; her parents are both dentists. She is very clever and is the only one of the three major characters to return to complete her final year at Hogwarts. In the epilogue to 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' nineteen years after the book's events, it is shown that she marries Ron Weasley and they have two children together, Hugo and Rose.
3. What colour jumper does Molly Weasley give to Ron for Christmas in 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'?

Answer: maroon

When Ron and Harry open their presents on Christmas morning, Ron moans to Harry that his mother always makes him a maroon jumper. Mrs Weasley sent a parcel for Harry of an emerald green jumper and a box of fudge. She is an avid knitter and all the Weasley family have hand-knitted jumpers she has made for them at various times.
4. What colour is shared by Hagrid's umbrella 'wand' and the Fat Lady's dress?

Answer: pink

Hagrid was not 'officially' allowed to practice magic as he was expelled from Hogwarts during his third year as a pupil and his wand was confiscated and broken. Dumbledore did, however, permit him to keep the broken wand, which Hagrid kept inside his pink umbrella; he was able to perform limited spells with it, with varying degrees of success.

The Fat Lady was the subject of the portrait guarding the password-protected entrance to the Gryffindor common room. Several passwords are featured in the books, the first one being 'Caput Draconis' (head of the dragon) when Harry first arrives at Hogwarts.
5. What colour is the Ford Anglia car owned and modified by Arthur Weasley, which makes its appearance in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'?

Answer: turquoise

Ron Weasley and the Weasley twins rescue Harry and his possessions from the Dursley's house in the Anglia at the beginning of the book and take him to spend the rest of the summer holiday with them at The Burrow. Ron and Harry subsequently use the car to fly back to Hogwarts at the beginning of term, where it crash-lands into the Whomping Willow.

It makes a further appearance later in the book when it rescues Harry, Ron and Fang from Aragog the Acromantula and his 'spider family' in the Forbidden Forest.
6. The Dark Mark, used by Lord Voldemort, is black when branded on the arms of his followers, the Death Eaters. When conjured in the sky, however, it is a different colour. What colour is the Dark Mark? Remember, the answer is the colour it is in the *books*.

Answer: green

Barty Crouch Jr. cast the 'Morsmordre' spell, which conjures up the Dark Mark, at the Quidditch World Cup at the start of 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' to summon the Death Eaters. The Cup Final was between Ireland and Bulgaria and was won by Ireland with a score of 170-160. This book introduced the recurring character Viktor Krum as the Seeker for the Bulgarian team.

The Dark Mark in the books is always green, as it is in the film of 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire', but in later film appearances it is grey.
7. Professor McGonagall is an Animagus, being able to change herself into a cat at will. What colour cat does her Animagus form take?

Answer: tabby

Professor Minerva McGonagall is seen very early on in the 'Harry Potter' series, in the first chapter of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' entitled 'The Boy Who Lived'. She is keeping watch with Dumbledore on the Dursley's house in Privet Drive for the arrival of Hagrid who appears, riding Sirius Black's motorbike, with baby Harry following the death of his parents at the hands of Lord Voldemort.
8. What colour is 'Mad-Eye' Moody's magical eye?

Answer: blue

The colour of Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody's magical eye is described as a 'vivid, electric blue'. Moody first appears in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' although towards the end of the book it is discovered that the real 'Mad-Eye' Moody has been kidnapped by Barty Crouch Jr and impersonated by him with the aid of Polyjuice Potion. The true Moody is rescued by Professors Dumbledore, Snape and McGonagall from the trunk in which he has been imprisoned.

'Mad-Eye' Moody is killed by Voldemort at the beginning of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'. His body is never recovered, although his magical eye is found adorning Dolores Umbridge's office door and taken and later buried by Harry as a token of respect.
9. First seen in 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix', newly-qualified Auror Nymphadora Tonks is a Metamorphmagus, meaning she is able to alter her appearance at will. One of her favourite hair colourings was 'bubble-gum pink'.

Answer: True

Tonks, as she preferred to be known, was killed by Bellatrix Lestrange (her aunt) in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' during the Battle of Hogwarts, as was her husband and fellow Order of the Phoenix member Remus Lupin. Their baby son Teddy became Harry's godson and was featured briefly in adult life in the epilogue of that book. Teddy Lupin inherited his mother's Metamorphmagus ability.
10. What colour was Voldemort's pet snake - and later Horcrux - Nagini?

Answer: green

Nagini makes her first appearance in the first chapter of 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'. Voldemort turns her into one of his Horcruxes towards the end of the series. She is eventually killed in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' by Neville Longbottom during the Battle of Hogwarts, using Godric Gryffindor's sword.
