Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Canada has ten provinces. Two have no coastline on any oceans. Alberta is one of them. Which is the other one?

Answer: Saskatchewan

The answer is Saskatchewan. British Columbia lies on the west coast of Canada and is on the Pacific Ocean. Nova Scotia has coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. Some might think that Ontario has no ocean coastline, but it borders Hudson Bay in the north and the St. Lawrence River in the south which are considered part of the Atlantic Ocean seaboard.

The same can be said for Manitoba, which borders part of Hudson Bay as well.
2. Why is the province of Prince Edward Island nicknamed "Spud Island"?

Answer: It's famous for its potatoes, also known as "spuds".

Prince Edward Island grows over 1.3 billion kilograms of potatoes every year, so it is known by many as "Spud Island". The word "spud" has been used to describe a small potato since the 16th century, but the origin of the word is unknown. Of course the people who live there don't use "spuds" as money, nor are most of them named "Spud", but with the amount of potatoes grown on there, I'd bet the whole island could, indeed, float on "spuds".
3. In which ocean are Canada's lobster fisheries located?

Answer: Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean provides Canada with its most lucrative ocean fishery. There are nearly ten thousand lobster enterprises that give employment to almost thirty thousand lobster fisherman, known better by the title "lobster harvesters".
4. What is Canada's most populated city?

Answer: Toronto, Ontario

Toronto has a population of nearly 2.7 million people. As of a 2006 census, the entire metropolitan Toronto area, also known as the Greater Toronto Area or GTA, has a population over 5.5 million. The GTA is considered a part of the Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario, whose population is over 8.1 million people. Amazingly, that represents over one-quarter of the entire population of Canada which means that 1 of every 4 Canadians live in this area of Southern Ontario.
5. Which of the following crops is NOT grown in Canada's Prairie Provinces? (Canada's Prairie Provinces consist of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta)

Answer: rice

Along with barley, oats, and canola, the main crops grown in Canada's Prairies also include wheat and brassica, but rice has never been one of the crops. Barley, oats, and wheat are considered to be cereal crops, while canola is an oilseed crop. Brassica falls into the category of legume forage crops belonging to the mustard family such as broccoli, kolrabi, cauliflower, turnip, rutubaga, and even bok choy among many.
6. Lake Okanagan, British Columbia, Canada, is home to which of the following fabled water monsters?

Answer: Ogopogo

Ogopogo is the name given to a "lake monster" that reportedly lives in Lake Okanagan, B.C., Canada. The Salish Indians, who have been seeing the monster since the 19th century, originally named it Naitaka, which means "lake demon". The answer had to be Ogopogo because it was described as a 'monster in Canada' and Loch Ness is in Scotland, while Chesapeake Bay is in the United States, and Moby Dick was a fictional whale from a classic story by Herman Melville.
7. Pekwachnamaykoskwaskwaypinwanik Lake is a lake located in the province of Manitoba. What Canadian record does the lake have?

Answer: It is the longest place name in Canada.

I hope some of the choices didn't trick you from picking the obvious one, which is the lake has the longest name of any place in Canada at thirty-one letters long. Of course, killer whales don't live in inland lakes, a body of water that measures four feet by three feet wouldn't be considered a lake, and how can "ocean ships" sink in a "lake"? The Cree natives called it that name which means; "where the wild trout are caught by fishing with hooks".
8. The stone figure pictured on the flag of the territory of Nunavut, which in the Inuit language means "in the likeness of a human", has what name in the English language?

Answer: inukshuk

The mysterious stone figure is known as an 'inukshuk' (plural: inuksuit). They are most often found throughout the circumpolar world. Inuksuit are made of unworked stones, and are used by the Inuit for communication and survival. The traditional meaning of the inukshuk is "Someone was here" or "You are on the right path." These sculptural forms are among the oldest and most important objects placed by humans upon the vast Arctic landscape.
9. Which world-famous city in Ontario, which provides a huge water source for hydroelectric power, is known as the "Honeymoon Capital of Canada"?

Answer: Niagara Falls

As one of the world's magnificent natural wonders, Niagara Falls, Ontario, is an enchanting and memorable sight for newlyweds. There are well over 50 hotels that market honeymoon suites, bed & breakfast accommodation and elegant Fallsview hotels. There are also several licensed wedding chapels where those wishing to be married can be legally wed.

My wife and I were married in Niagara Falls at The Little Wedding Chapel in 2004.
10. At number six on the list of the world's tallest mountains, what is the name of the mountain that is Canada's tallest?

Answer: Mount Logan

At 5,959 metres, Mount Logan in the Yukon Territory, is by far Canada's tallest mountain peak. It is the second highest mountain in North America, with Mount McKinley in Alaska, U.S.A. being taller by 235 metres. A temperature of −77.5 °C (−107.5 °F) was recorded in May 1991, making Mount Logan the northern hemisphere's "Pole of Cold".
