Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of the three Potter children?

Answer: Ben, Tom and Lindy

The book begins when Benjamin, Thomas and Melinda (Ben, Tom and Lindy for short) meet a strange man at the zoo who tells them there is such a thing as a Whangdoodle.
Simon, Jane and Barney are from the "Dark is Rising Series" by Susan Cooper; Peter, Edmund and Lucy are from the "Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis; Harry, James and Lily refers to the Potters, Harry and his parents, from the "Harry Potter" series by J.K. Rowling.
2. What is the name of the professor who offers to teach the children how to enter Whangdoodleland?

Answer: Samuel Savant

Professor Savant is the man the children meet at the zoo. On Halloween, Tom and Lindy bet that Lindy won't knock on the door of a scary house. Lindy does and it turns out to be the professor's house. Earlier in the book, there had been an article in the paper saying Professor Savant had recently won the Nobel Prize!
3. What are the caps called that the children wear to help them get to Whangdoodleland?

Answer: sympathetic hats

The kids call them by their nickname - scrappy caps. Lindy's is a beautiful red bonnet covered in flowers. Ben's is an Indian headband with tassels. Tom's is a blue felt cap from Madeira.
4. Who is the first creature the children meet when they enter Whangdoodleland?

Answer: The Whiffle Bird

Their first trip is pretty short. They meet the Whiffle Bird, who looks like a big fluff, with feathers of red, yellow, pink, purple and orange. She doesn't fly well and only speaks in clichés.
5. Who was the creature that tricked Lindy into entering Whangdoodleland without the others?

Answer: the Splintercat

He is very friendly and he leads Lindy into Whangdoodleland so she can see his house. Once there, he gives her food that makes her sleepy and tangles her in his yarn so she can't escape. When Lindy sings, he cries because it is so beautiful.
6. Do the professor and the children ever spend a night in Whangdoodleland?

Answer: Yes

When the professor, Ben and Tom go to rescue Lindy, they manage the feat, but then decide it is their best chance to try and get to the Whangdoodle, so they trudge on, staying overnight outside the woods of the Tree Squeaks.
7. What happens when they ate the berries before entering the woods full of tree-squeaks?

Answer: They all get the hiccups.

The Whiffle Bird told them "Shut your mouth", meaning they shouldn't eat the berries. They have to be quiet when they go through the woods, so as not to wake the Tree Squeaks. But the hiccups come and are very noisy.
8. What kind of tree do the boys get stuck in after their ride on the Gazooks?

Answer: gum

They literally get stuck and can free themselves only by chewing the trees. Eventually, they blow huge bubbles that lift them out of the tree.
9. Do the children and the professor ever get to meet the Whangdoodle?

Answer: Yes

The children cross the bridge and finally convince the Prock to let them see the Whangdoodle. Then Lindy helps the professor cross the bridge because the Whangdoodle wants the professor to create him a female whangdoodle because he is lonely.
10. What is the name of the color that means all the colors of the rainbow at once?

Answer: Flange

According to the Whangdoodle, it is the hardest, but at the celebration for his new queen, he has no trouble with the color at all because he is so happy.
