Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Picture the covers of "Destination Moon" and "Land of Black Gold". Both depict a jeep. Which of the following statements is correct?

Answer: The "Black Gold" jeep is red, the "Destination Moon" jeep is blue

Further points of difference: the "Black Gold" jeep is driving towards us, the "Destination Moon" jeep is driving away. The "Destination Moon" jeep has a windscreen, the "Black Gold" jeep has none. I could go on.
2. Which of the following covers does NOT feature words written in a non-Roman alphabet?

Answer: Tintin and the Picaros

"Land of Black Gold" features Arabic writing, "The Blue Lotus" has a Chinese character (on a lantern), and "Cigars of the Pharaoh" gives us Egyptian hieroglyphics. "Tintin and the Picaros", while it depicts a Mesoamerican pyramid, does not feature any writing in a Mesoamerican script.
3. What two colors are the giant mushroom on the cover of "The Shooting Star"?

Answer: Red and white

Thanks to the miraculous qualities of "phostlite", Tintin's day is made exciting by not only giant (exploding) mushrooms, but giant apples, butterflies and spiders. The second book to feature Haddock, who is attempting to put alcoholism behind him and serves as President of the Society for Sober Sailors.
4. How many covers depict a female character?

Answer: 1

Ah! My beauty past compare, these jewels bright I wear! The book is "The Castafiore Emerald" and the character is the diva, Bianca Castafiore. While not the only woman to feature in a Tintin book, she is the only one who ever made the cover - it can't be denied that female characters are something of a rarity in Tintin's adventures.
5. Which of the following covers shows the villain of the book in question?

Answer: Land of Black Gold

Dr. Muller, AKA Professor Smith, AKA Mull Pasha! First appearing in "The Black Island", he re-appeared in "Land of Black Gold", this time sporting a full beard to go with his mustache, and still growling his Teutonic swearwords. This time, he made the cover, sitting morosely at Tintin's side in the afore-mentioned jeep.
6. Which character is waving a makeshift flag on the cover of "The Red Sea Sharks"?

Answer: Haddock

Don't laugh, it could have been Snowy! Snowy is no ordinary dog. In the event however, it's Haddock, with his blue sailor's jersey, who is on flag-waving duty. Tintin, and Skut the eyepatch-wearing Estonian, are only waving their hands. Snowy, perhaps, is wagging his tail?
7. Which of the following covers does NOT show the sea?

Answer: The Crab with the Golden Claws

"The Crab with the Golden Claws" depicts the Sahara, a veritable sea of sand, and camels, AKA the ships of the desert. But the actual sea, though it features in the story, is nowhere to be seen on the cover.

You were possibly misled regarding "The Secret of the Unicorn", which shows a scene from Haddock's pre-Marlinspike apartment. But, of course, the cover also has that inset of the "Unicorn" at sail on the high seas.
8. What musical instrument is being played on the cover of "The Castafiore Emerald"?

Answer: Piano

It is being played by the diva's constant companion, Mr. Wagner. Snowy and the Marlinspike cat, their differences temporarily put aside, are hiding under it together in fear of her voice. This is the only cover (perhaps the only instance in the books at all - correct me if I'm wrong) where the fourth wall is breached, as Tintin faces out and hushes the reader.
9. Which is the only cover on which Snowy is wearing some form of garment?

Answer: Explorers on the Moon

On the cover of "Explorers on the Moon", Snowy is wearing his orange spacesuit, complete with tail. On all the other covers, Snowy is his white fluffy self - although I always felt they should have given him something warm to put on for "Tintin in Tibet".
10. On which of these covers is Tintin wearing his traditional blue shirt and plus-four knickerbockers?

Answer: The Red Sea Sharks

All the regulars have a basic costume: Haddock with his navy-blue jersey and black sailor's outfit; Calculus with his green hat and overcoat; the Thompsons...well, you know. With Tintin himself, it's the blue shirt and knickerbockers, but he has appeared on the covers in a cowboy costume, a spacesuit, a sombrero - even a kilt. Not on the cover of "The Red Sea Sharks" though.
