Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of course our main character went to the Yule Ball. Who was Harry Potter's date?

Answer: Parvati Patil

Parvati seems to revel in the attention escorting a school champion brings. Her excitement quickly fades as Harry shows very little interest in her and the ball in general. After giving up on Harry, she spends the rest of the evening with an unnamed lad from Beauxbaton. That seems pretty rude of our hero, but in all fairness, they weren't well matched.

She seems to be a bit too much of a girly girl for Harry. She is, however, bright, pretty, brave, loyal and friendly. She would be a good catch for someone.
2. Ron Weasley may have had silly looking dress robes, but he still managed to get a date to the Yule Ball. Who did he take?

Answer: Padma Patil

Unfortunately, we don't learn much about Padma in the books. Except for the time she spent with Ron at The Yule Ball, she is only mentioned in passing. We know that she is Parvati Patil's identical twin sister and she is in Raveclaw house. The twins are described by Dean Thomas as "...the best-looking girls in the year." She was also a member of Dumbledore's Army, and fought in and survived The Battle of Hogwarts.

At the Yule Ball she gets frustrated because Ron ignores her and is grateful to be rescued by an unnamed Beauxbatons gentleman.
3. Hermione kept who she was going to The Yule Ball with a secret until the last possible second. Who was her date?

Answer: Victor Krum

Victor Krum is a lesson in contradictions. He is a world class athlete and a high school student. He spends much of his time in the public but is taciturn and shy. He is constantly surrounded by giggling female admirers, while he is attracted to the girl who isn't smitten by his celebrity. He can fly like a bird but schlumps awkwardly when he walks.

My favorite time with Krum is when he describes fighting against fellow students for wearing Grindelwald's symbol. He was doing what he could to stand up to the despot that killed his grandfather.
4. There would be no Yule Ball without our champions. Who went to the ball with the first Hogwarts champion, Cedric Diggory?

Answer: Cho Chang

Cho got a bum rap in the movies. They suggested that she ratted out Dumbledore's Army, and that caused Harry to break up with her. In the book, Cho's friend Marietta Edgecomb betrayed Harry and his friends. When Cho defends her friend it leads to the breakup.

Cho had some troubling issues. She was torn between Harry and Cedric until Cedric died. Then, by dating Harry she was caught in the middle of the controversy surrounding Harry and the return of Voldemort. It was enough to make anyone a bit mad.

After GOF her character kind of fades into the background. I like to think she found her way to happiness.
5. Everybody wanted to take Fleur Delacour to the Yule Ball, but who wound up being her escort?

Answer: Roger Davies

Roger is another one that we never learn much about. He is apparently a few years older than Harry. He was the Ravenclaw quidditch seeker and captain. After the ball he asked Cho out, but she refused. He later got an unnamed girlfriend.
6. What "lucky" girl got to be Draco Malfoy's escort?

Answer: Pansy Parkinson

About the only thing we clearly know about Pansy is that she is one nasty piece of work. Harry considered her to be "pug faced" and Hermione once called her "thick as a concussed troll." Most of the time when we see her, she is either fawning over Draco or being snide to everyone else.

She even goes so far as to give vicious gossip to the paper and tell Umbridge things clearly designed to make Hagrid look bad. Her lowest point is when she demands Harry be turned over to Voldemort to be killed. Of course, that doesn't happen.

It has been suggested that Pansy wants to turn Harry in not to be mean to Harry, but to protect the school from the Death Eaters. Personally, I am of the opinion that she hears Voldemort's command, sees Harry and just figures it is the thing to do. I doubt she really considers why.
7. Neville Longbottom first asked Hermione to the ball but she already had a date. Who did he take instead?

Answer: Ginny Weasley

Ah, Ginny, the girl of my dreams (don't tell my wife!). The horcrux of Tom Riddle considers her just "a silly little girl." How wrong he is! She's smart enough to pick the name Dumbledore's Army and help find a way to talk to Sirius when all communication out of the castle was monitored.

She's talented enough to get into the Slug Club with no familial connections. She's athletic enough to be the only member of the gang to go pro. She's strong enough to co-lead Dumbledore's Army after Harry's departure.

She's sweet and caring but no pushover. At times she takes Dean, Hermione, Ron and Harry all to task when she believes they are messing up. During her fourth and fifth years she is so beautiful that boys are lining up to date her. Let's not forget, though, that Neville got there first!
8. Fred Weasley got a date, but we don't know if George did. Who did Fred take?

Answer: Angelina Johnson

We first meet Angelina as chaser for Gryffindor's quidditch team. She is sometimes critical of Wood's over-enthusiastic captain style. However, when she takes over the captaincy in her seventh year, she becomes so intense herself, that Harry suggests she's channeling Wood's spirit. Later she joins the Battle of Hogwarts and comes out alive. Eventually she marries George Weasley and they have two kids, Fred II and Roxanne.
9. We aren't told the dates for every student but we do know that two students went to the ball alone. Which two?

Answer: Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle

Crabbeandgoyle, it's practically one word isn't it? They seem to be the opposite of Fred and George, aka Fredandgeorge. F & G are brothers of Harry's best friend; C & G are cronies of his biggest rival. F & G are smart, fun and popular; C & G are incompetent, mean and shunned by three fourths of the school. I find it interesting that for the first six books neither Crabbe nor Goyle utters a single, solitary word. I have never understood why.
10. The only way we know that Miss Fawcett and Mr Stebbins were dates for the Yule Ball was because they were caught by a teacher, apparently getting "friendly" in a rose bush. Which teacher caught them?

Answer: Severus Snape

So much debate has gone on about Snape's character! Is he a vindictive bully or a wounded soul? Does he carry a pure, unrequited love or a grudgeful, one-sided obsession? Are his actions those of a self-sacrificing hero, or a self-serving villain? I am not going to try to answer these questions here.

It will just suffice to say that he is Lily's one-time friend, James's life-long rival and Harry's Potions teacher.
