Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who directed the 1957 film '12 Angry Men', which starred Henry Fonda as the dissenting juror in the trial of a teenage boy accused of murdering his father?

Answer: Sidney Lumet

Also starring Lee J Cobb, Jack Klugman and Ed Begley, '12 Angry Men' was nominated for three Academy Awards. The film was adapted from the television drama written by Reginald Rose. Filming was completed within three weeks and it is still regarded as one of the greatest courtroom drama classics of all time. Sidney Lumet was born in Philadelphia in 1924.
2. The number twelve is also known as a dozen; however, how many loaves are in a baker's dozen?

Answer: 13

In 13th century England, during the reign of Henry III, there were severe punishments for bakers if they gave a customer a short measure. They therefore baked loaves in batches of thirteen whilst charging for twelve, so in the event of one loaf in a batch being spoiled, they would still have the dozen loaves required by law.
3. Of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, which one was the brother of Simon Peter (Saint Peter)?

Answer: Andrew

Saint Andrew was the brother of Saint Peter. They were both fishermen, from Bethsaida, on the Sea of Galilee, who were called on by Jesus to be 'fishers of men'. Saint Andrew had been a disciple of John the Baptist. He is the patron saint of many countries including Scotland.
4. In the periodic table, which element has the atomic number 12?

Answer: Magnesium

Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal, identified by the symbol Mg. It is highly flammable in small quantities and burns very brightly; historically, in its powdered form, it was used in early flash photography. It has many uses and is widely used in engine manufacture in the car and aircraft industries, also in firework and marine flare production.
5. Which actor starred in the 1949 film 'Twelve O'clock High', about the role of American aircrew in World War II?

Answer: Gregory Peck

The film was directed by Henry King and won two Academy Awards: Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Dean Jagger and Best Sound Recording. It featured the role of the men of the United States Army's Eighth Air Force during World War II. Filmed mainly in America, some background scenes were also filmed at RAF Barford St John in Oxfordshire, England.

In the film, Gregory Peck played the part of Brigadier General Frank Savage.
6. Of the twelve signs of the zodiac, three are associated with each of the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. With which element is the sign Aquarius associated? (Be careful!)

Answer: Air

Aquarius, being the sign of the Water Bearer, might be assumed to be a water sign. It is, however, an air sign, the other air signs being Gemini and Libra. Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac.
7. What is the twelfth letter in the Greek alphabet?

Answer: Mu

The Greek alphabet has 24 letters, from Alpha to Omega. Mu is the origin of the Cyrillic letter M and the Roman M.
8. What is the name given to the product of twelve multiplied by itself, i.e. twelve squared?

Answer: a gross

Twelve squared is known as a gross. A brace is another term for two, a grand is a slang term for 1,000 (usually used in a financial context), and the number twenty is sometimes referred to as a score.
9. What is the name given to a twelve-sided polygon?

Answer: dodecagon

A decagon has ten sides, a pentagon five and an octagon eight. A polygon is the general term for a many-sided figure, the actual number of sides being indicated by the variation in the prefix.
10. Bruce Willis starred in this 1995 science fiction film set in the future. It was about a criminal who traveled back in time to the 1990s to earn a pardon for himself by finding a virus that had contaminated the world, forcing the population to live underground. The title of the film was 'Twelve ___'?

Answer: Monkeys

'The Twelve Monkeys' was directed by Terry Gilliam of 'Monty Python' fame (to whom my option of 'parrots' is respectfully dedicated). It also starred Brad Pitt and Madeleine Stowe. Brad Pitt won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.
