quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the British term for what Americans call a windshield?

Answer: windscreen

Some terms relating to cars have developed differently between the US and UK since cars were invented. The bonnet is what Americans call the hood. The boot is what Americans call the trunk. What is known as a parking lot in the US is called a car park in England, and an American car rental agency would be called a car hire in Blighty.
2. In the movie "South Pacific," John Kerr played the part of Lieutenant Joe ________.

Answer: Cable

Joe falls in love with island girl Liat but, as he sings in "You've Got To Be Taught," he can't take her home with him. Luther Billis (Ray Walston) is the guy who can get you whatever you want and Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor) is the navy nurse who falls in love with Emile De Becque.
Carter is the character played by Sylvester Stallone in "Get Carter."
3. A novel by John Steinbeck about an ill-fated trip; a 1956 movie starring Marilyn Monroe and Don Murray; and a disaster-movie spoof filmed in 1976 with Joe Bologna and Stockard Channing all have the same word in their titles. What is the word?

Answer: bus

The novel is "The Wayward Bus," the 1956 movie is "Bus Stop," and the disaster spoof is "The Big Bus."
4. What item is used in tennis, ping pong, volleyball, ice hockey, badminton, and basketball?

Answer: a net

"Ping pong" spelled backwards is "gnip gnop," which, if you pronounce it as two syllables (g-nip g-nop) sounds more like a game of ping pong than "ping pong"! (I swear I have not been drinking!)
5. In the book "The Science Fiction Hall of Fame," edited by Robert Silverberg, you will find a story called:

Answer: Scanners Live in Vain

I believe "Scanners" was written by L. Cordwainer Smith, which is the pen name of Paul Linebarger. The other stories are not science fiction. "Bernice" is a very entertaining story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. If you haven't read it, correct that error immediately. "Hadleyburg" is another very entertaining story, by Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens). "The Sign of Four" is a mystery, a Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle, as if you didn't know. Whoever already knew all this stuff, please raise your hand! Very good! You get fruit cup!
6. On "Star Trek: the Next Generation," what is the name of the character played by Brent Spiner?

Answer: Data

Unless you're a hard-core Trek fan, you might have a hard time recognizing Spiner without his makeup.
7. Demosthenes, Stephen Douglas, Adolf Hitler, and Martin Luther King were all known for their skills as ____?

Answer: speakers

The ancient Greek orator Demosthenes supposedly improved his speaking skills by declaiming with a mouthful of pebbles.
8. What is the name of the Civil War ship whose turret was recovered off the east coast of the United States in the summer of 2002?

Answer: the Monitor

The Union ship USS Monitor, designed by John Ericsson, was one of the first two ironclad ships, the other being the Confederate ship Merrimac, also known as the Virginia. These ships revolutionized naval warfare and ship construction. On March 9, 1862, in the Battle of Hampton Roads, off the Virginia coast, the Monitor met the Merrimac in an inconclusive battle which resulted in little damage to the ships because nobody had yet come up with armor-penetrating shells! The Monitor was later sunk in a storm.

The battleship USS Maine, a descendant of the Monitor, was blown up and sunk in Havana harbor in 1898 by persons still unknown, thus touching off the Spanish-American War.
9. In addition to his prodigious skills as a statesman, writer, and inventor (he invented these bifocals I'm wearing), Benjamin Franklin was also known as a:

Answer: printer

His occupation was printer for many years.
10. By what initials is a central processing unit also known as?

Answer: CPU

As far as I know, there is no Central Pennsylvania University, but I need a way to get this answer into the quiz!
11. What do the harpsichord and the accordion have that the oboe and clarinet don't?

Answer: a keyboard

The harpsichord is like a little, high-pitched piano of centuries ago. (Pardon my lack of musical expertise.) The funny thing about the harpsichord is that, even if you have no idea how to play it, it somehow sounds great!
12. Very early in his career, Walt Disney created a cartoon character named Mortimer. What was Mortimer?

Answer: a mouse

Before long, Mortimer changed his name to Mickey Mouse, starred in "Steamboat Willie," and the rest is Mouse Kingdom history.
13. Which of these slang terms is commonly used to refer to a bachelor's apartment or flat?

Answer: pad

The word conjures up an image of a place that is none too tidy and has a refrigerator stuffed with junk food. Wonder why?
14. What item used for recording and playing music was introduced in 1982?

Answer: the audio compact disc

We've had the audio CD for 20 years now (as of 2002), and we're using the CD for our PC's also, but some day it will be as strange and laughable a museum piece as the eight-track tape and the original Edison cylinder recordings.
15. Well, here we are again, and I have the feeling that more players than ever will get this theme. All of these items relate to a _____________.

Answer: computer

Right! They all relate in some way to the computer, either parts thereof or items used with a computer. First there's the screen (1), which is part of the monitor (8). You have to have cables (2) to connect all the peripherals, such as the monitor, scanner (5), speakers (7), printer (9), keyboard (11) and mouse (12), which sits on a pad (13). All of the peripherals are hooked into the CPU (10) or central processing unit.

As you are right now, many of us use our computers to surf the (inter)net (4). CD's (14) are becoming more and more popular for installing software and for recording music and data files, and we can also play music CD's on the E drive. And then there's the bus (3). Anybody have any idea what that is? I mean I have no clue. Hey, wait a minute! I think it's coming to me. Yeah. Got it.The bus is the electrical circuits linking the CPU and peripherals together; it transmits data (6) between these units. Well, I hope you learned something from this quiz and of course enjoyed it as well.

By the way, I'm changing the name of my common bond quizzes. I noticed they don't get nearly as much play as those of other authors, and it occurred to me that players might think they're quizzes about British politics. At least, I hope that's the reason. So from now on I'll be using the new title. See ya soon. Mickey.
