Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the national park due south of King's Canyon National Park?

Answer: Sequoia

Sequoia is directly adjacent to King's Canyon, forming in essence one huge park. They are due east of the California towns of Clovis, Fresno, and Visalia.
2. In what movie did Steve McQueen have his stuntman Bud Ekins, do his own spectacular motorcycle stunts?

Answer: The Great Escape

McQueen co-starred with James Garner and Richard Attenborough in this based-on-truth story of a mass escape from a German prison camp during WW II. He showed he knew how to handle a motorcycle and didn't need to be doubled, except for his leap over the rolls of barbed wire during the scene where he's trying to get into Switzerland. His friend Bud Ekins did that one.
3. Which of these historical figures was Portuguese?

Answer: Prince Henry the Navigator

Prince Henry lived from 1394 to 1460. He encouraged and furthered Portuguese exploration down the coast of Africa, mainly to free that area from Muslim domination. All the other choices were Spanish, including de Vaca, whose name means "cow's head"!
4. What town in northern Italy is known for making beautiful glass?

Answer: Murano

Murano is located on a small island just north of Venice. Their craftsmen have been creating glass art for over 1000 years, and their tools and techniques have not changed much over all that time.
5. Natty Bumppo is the main character of which of these novels by James Fenimore Cooper?

Answer: The Pathfinder

Bumppo and his companion Chingachgook, chief of the Mohicans or Delawares, were the main characters of Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales" novels, which included "The Pathfinder," "The Deerslayer," and "The Last of the Mohicans."
6. General Dwight Eisenhower is often referred to as the commander of SHAEF in Europe in the last year of World War II. Fill in the missing word in the phrase SHAEF stands for: Supreme Headquarters Allied _____________ Force.

Answer: Expeditionary

Eisenhower was a brilliant organizer and politician in the sense of being able to manage and reconcile the needs of war with the conflicting personalities and egos of his commanders. I guess that's why he got two terms as President (1953-1961).
7. In what movie did Chris Tucker appear in drag, and outrageous drag at that?

Answer: The Fifth Element

"The Fifth Element" was one strange movie. Bruce Willis was the star, but Tucker appears somewhere near the end in an outfit that was so extreme that even most drag queens would be embarrassed to show up in it. He certainly didn't seem ready to be Jackie Chan's buddy in that flick.
8. What large lake is on the border between Nevada and California?

Answer: Lake Tahoe

Tahoe is a big, beautiful mountain lake which forms part of the border between the two states. About 3/4 of the lake is in California, and the Nevada state line changes direction at this point from north-south to southeast, creating that acute-angled corner you see on the map.

The tourist area at the south end of the lake is divided into two distinctly different parts: the Nevada side with the casinos, and the California side, where they're illegal.
9. In what 1986 movie did Christopher Lambert play a Scotsman named Connor MacLeod, and Sean Connery play Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez?

Answer: Highlander

This is the story of two immortal swordsmen from centuries ago who fight it out on the streets of New York. Oddly enough, nobody notices. :>)
10. What 1983 movie takes a look back at a band that was popular years ago but whose leader has since died?

Answer: Eddie and the Cruisers

Michael Pare played Eddie. There was a sequel called "Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives" in 1989. In the closing credits of the original movie, it is revealed that Eddie is still alive.
11. What is the name of the most fashionable, most expensive shopping street in Beverly Hills?

Answer: Rodeo Drive

Some of the shops on the Drive are Tiffany, Versace, and Bulgari. It's also in the 90210 zip code. "Zip" means "Zoning Improvement Plan."
12. In which Canadian Province or Territory can you see the towns of Whitehorse and Dawson, the Ogilvie Mountains, and Vuntut and Ivvavik National Parks?

Answer: the Yukon territory

The Yukon is right next to Alaska. It's also a place where Jimmy Buffett "don't want to land."
13. What movie starred Sean Connery as a reclusive writer possibly based on J. D. Salinger?

Answer: Finding Forrester

Gus van Sant directed this story of a gifted African-American teen boy and the writer who becomes his friend and mentor.
14. What swing instrumental was a big hit for Charlie Barnet in 1939?

Answer: Cherokee

"Cherokee" was a smash and made Charlie's big band an overnight sensation. They played all the top ballrooms and had their own radio show. They also recorded "Redskin Rhumba", among many others.
15. Well, if you got enough right answers you'll have no trouble figuring out the theme, the common bond. These things are very familiar today but few and far between only a few years ago. Fill in the blank with three words, spelled out, no abbreviations. Last word ends in "s."

Answer: sport utility vehicles

Our theme is the ubiquitous sport utility vehicles. We start with the subcompact Isuzu Rodeo Sport (question 11), then the compact Ford Escape (2), Honda Element (7) and Subaru Forester (13). Next the midsize Jeep Cherokee (14), Nissan Murano (4), Nissan Pathfinder (5), and Toyota Highlander (9). Finally the full size Chevy Tahoe (8), Ford Expedition (6), Yukon (12), Lincoln Navigator (3), Toyota Land Cruiser (10), and Toyota Sequoia (1).
