Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What number is missing from the following sequence - 7, 8, 5, 5, 3, 4, 4, 6, _, 7, 8, 8? Think of something that is very well-known that consists of the same number of items as there are numbers (including the missing one) in this question.

Answer: 9

Number of letters in the months of the year when written as words, starting at January. September is the "missing" month, and this contains 9 letters when written as a word.

January (7), February (8), March (5), April (5), May (3), June (4), July (4), August (6), September (9), October (7), November (8), December (8).
2. Which motor manufacturer can be found spelled out within the word BusinessDictionary.com defines as "Conclusion drawn from the analysis of the 'life cycle cost' of a proposed acquisition that the purchase is in accord with the resources and long term requirements of the acquirer"?

Answer: Ford

AfFORDability is defined by BusinessDictionary.com as "Conclusion drawn from the analysis of the 'life cycle cost' of a proposed acquisition that the purchase is in accord with the resources and long term requirements of the acquirer".

As an example, "Steve needed to consider not only the purchase price, but also the ongoing running costs when considering the affordability of the new car he was looking to buy".
3. When written forwards, this word is something you might be given by your boss if you perform well. When written backwards, this word is somewhere you might put the thing your boss gave you.

Answer: Reward

If you perform well, your boss might give you a REWARD. It might be that the best place to keep this reward is a DRAWER. This could be referred to as a semordnilap, a term coined in recent years, which is a word (or phrase) that makes a meaningful (but different) word or phrase when read backwards.

A word (or phrase) that makes the same word or phrase when read backwards is, of course, referred to as a palindrome.
4. What two-word palindrome solves this clue ... clever modes of transport?

Answer: Smart trams

A palindrome is a word or phrase that reads the same backwards as it does forwards, for example: NOON; ROTOR; MADAM I'M ADAM. Palindromes make allowances for punctuation (e.g. the apostrophe in the example above).
5. How many letter 'e's are there in this question?

Answer: 7

How many lEttEr 'E's arE thErE in this quEstion?

Two in 'letter', one in ''e's', one in 'are', two in 'there', and one in 'question.
6. If I were to add together the following... The number of "times a lady" Lionel Richie said that you were The number a stitch in time is said to save And the number that is a homophone of the word yelled by golfers when they hit a bad shot And then subtract the number related to Deadly Sins or Hills of Rome ...what new item did my true love give to me on the day of the number you are left with according to the song "The Twelve Days Of Christmas"?

Answer: Ladies Dancing

"You're once, twice, three times a lady"
"A stitch in time saves nine"
Golfers often yell "fore" when they hit a bad shot to warn other golfers a ball might be heading their way.
The Seven Deadly Sins are pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. The Seven Hills of Rome are Aventine Hill, Caelian Hill, Capitoline Hill, Esquiline Hill, Palatine Hill, Quirinal Hill, and Viminal Hill.

So, 3 + 9 + 4 - 7 = 9.

"On the ninth day of Christmas
my true love sent to me:
Nine Ladies Dancing
Eight Maids a Milking
Seven Swans a Swimming
Six Geese a Laying
Five Golden Rings
Four Calling Birds
Three French Hens
Two Turtle Doves
and a Partridge in a Pear Tree"

As all of the other gifts have already previously been given on the preceding days, Nine Ladies Dancing is the new item as asked for in the question.
7. Anne, Bob, and Cara all work for the same company. Anne has been in the company 50% longer than Bob. Three times Bob's number of years in service minus the number of years Cara has been in the company = One year less than Anne has worked for the company. Four times Cara's number of years in service minus four times Anne's number of years in service = The number of years Bob has been in the company. How many years has Cara been in the company?

Answer: 7

The sentences can be made into equations, thus...
(i) A = 1.5B ; (ii) 3B - C = A - 1 ; (iii) 4C - 4A = B

Solving,
Doubling (i) gives 2A = 3B
Replacing in (ii) gives 2A - C = A - 1
Cancelling As gives A - C = -1
Reversing negatives give C - A = 1
Rewriting (iii) gives 4(C - A) = B
Replacing gives 4(1) = B
Therefore B = 4
Replacing in (i) gives A = 1.5(4)
Therefore A = 6
Replacing in (ii) gives 3(4) - C = 6 - 1
Solving gives 12 - C = 5
Therefore C = 7

So, Anne has been in the company for 6 years, Bob for 4, and Cara for 7.
8. Alex, Billy and Charlie are enjoying a game of ten pin bowling. They are just about to start the fourth frame. So far, Alex has scored 7 - Spare ; 8 - 1 ; Strike, Billy has scored Strike ; 4 - Spare ; 2 - 4, and Charlie has scored 7 - 0 ; Strike ; Strike. Who CURRENTLY has the highest score?

Answer: Billy

In ten pin bowling, a strike scores ten points, plus the score obtained with the next two bowls, and a spare scores ten points plus the score obtained with the next bowl.

So, the players' scores frame-by-frame are as follows...

Alex : 18 - 27 - 37
Billy : 20 - 32 - 38
Charlie : 7 - 27 - 37

Although Billy currently has the highest score, as both Alex and Charlie scored a strike in the third frame, their next two bowls will add to their current frame three score, so they are almost certain to both be showing a higher frame three score than Billy after they have all bowled their fourth frame.
9. Which of the following produces the greatest number?

Answer: Nine squared

Nine squared equals 81.
Four cubed equals 64.
A gross is 144, so half a gross is 72.
A score is 20, so four score equals 80.
10. Which letter most logically fits within this sequence? A H I M O _ U V W X Y I hope you don't have cause to reflect on an incorrect answer for this one.

Answer: T

The sequence contains all of the letters of the alphabet which, when written as capitals, have vertical mirror symmetry.
